Because Lima called the CLASS of the 2-6-6-6 the Allegheny coz of their first order in 41 and they are catalogued as such in my grandfather's LIMA LOCOMOTIVE WORKS yearly public catalogue!! He could walk over from Westinghouse (where he worked ) and get most publications from his friend ! Lionel is naming the class H7 Allegheny!! Thank you Eric for letting others know NOT just C&O operated this class it had more HP than Alco's Big Boy UP just used their proud flagship to more efficiency than the C&O !! Keep up the great reviews and by now everyone should know we can turn off crew talk "out" lol
I have been looking forward to this review for months. Excellent job as always Eric and thanks for mentioning #1601 and #1604! I live 30 minutes away from The Henry Ford and I love #1601. I still remember the first time standing at the front of that monster for a photo at 4 years old. I hope to get to #1604 someday.
Walter's Trains Sometimes you don't have a choice. Locomotives can be landlocked with no rail around for miles. And after super large amounts of deterioration it can be impossible to put locomotives together again. And while it's sad to see any locomotive go sometimes it's just necessary
Unfortunately I agree. Me being a huge fan of steam locomotives since I was born makes me sad to know how lucky I am to have rode behind a Narrow Gauge Steam Locomotive at Hesston Steam Museum when I was a toddler. Most steam locomotives are lucky if a Museum uses them for displays, or even get brought back to life. Treasure every moment you get to see a steam locomotive under it's own power! Chances are, you might get another chance at it again!
Another cool feature in the cab is you can open the access to the firebox. I haven't seen that on any other steam engines and it is nice to see the engine go by with a nice glow of red coming from the cab. Great video Eric!!
Lionel’s very first rendition of the Allegheny was made in the late 1990s and was modeled after C&O #1601. The same goes for the UP Big Boy. The very first Big Boy made by Lionel was modeled after UP #4006. Both the Allegheny and Big Boy were equipped with TMCC.
Thanks for the informative review, Eric. Just for the record those 9 round objects that are positioned on each side of the bottom half of the firebox, and are connected via piping, are overfire jets and were not used on the Virginian AG's. Those were only used on the final batch of H8's that LIMA built for the C&O and included cab numbers 1644 - 1659. So that detailing does not belong on the other C&O cab numbers presently being offered. Lionel, in the past, has released both the first and the final versions of the Allegheny and should have been aware of the differences. The "add on detail" between the feed water heater and the smoke stack is the exhaust for the steam driven cross compound air pumps mounted on the smokebox. All that being said enjoy running the Blue Ridge. It can probably walk away with whatever you couple to its tank. If interested see if your library can obtain a copy of Allegheny Lima's Finest by Eugene Huddleston. I think you will enjoy it.
allegheny48 - Another thing that Mr. Huddleston pointed out in that book was that these engines had very good speed on flat terrain. Supposedly the C&O intended for that, but primarily used them more for the strength..
The C&O basically used them in the mountains for coal drags; one on each end of the train. However, in their final years some of them were used in Ohio where they could run at speed. They also were known for hauling long heavyweight troop/POW trains at 60-70 mph during WWII. Wouldn't it be interesting to pit an H8 against a Big Boy?
@ERIC'S TRAINS - Once again you give good info on the actual historical train. Allegheny or Blue Ridge, same Engine. CHECK Let's say the RAILROAD Company that had the most of these Locomotives gets to NAME the Locomotive; C&O = 60 Virginian = 8 Therefore; "ALLEGHENY" it is. LOL!
Great locomotive and video. An interesting fun fact is that the Virginian "Blue Ridge" locomotive, No. 906, which is what you have, was used as the basis for Sam in Thomas and Friends.
Great video! Hopefully you won't have to tear the layout down in 6 months. And I hope you can do a video someday with a lionel PRR 4-4-4-4 T-1 (if possible)
@ERIC'S TRAINS - This is a POWERFUL STEAM ENGINE and accurate to the REAL Steam Engine, as you CONFIRMED when you made a statement regarding its "PULLING POWER." There should be NO NEED to "Double Head" this Engine as you stated because it is STRONG enough on its own.
Great review as usual Eric. I like how detailed you are, especially to newcomers to he hobby that don't understand certain things such as "Wheel Arrangements" that identify specific steam locomotives. Also I like how to try to clear up the air about certain things so you don't get remarks or comments stating something that you possibly overlooked. You cover your bases very well. Question, how does the pulling power compare to either your "Challenger", Cab Forward" or the infamous "Big Boy" you own? This one seems like the best puller you have! Thanks, Tom
Well Eric... One thing that you can say about your review of this engine is not only that you did your usual very thorough review of the 2-6-6-6, but also you can be certain that no one else will ever do a better job of it! It seems that you understandably may prefer not to go into a lot of detail about your educational background, but you seem very comfortable when it comes to technical aspects of the hobby. Do you by any chance have an engineering degree and if so where did you go to get it? Looking forward to the presentation on transformers and curious as to any limits your layout has regarding multiple unit combinations/lash-ups from the standpoint of allowable track or circuit current capacity? As always, thanks for your excellent work!
i believe i forgot to put, "when you or if you get it" i sometimes type too fast and i forget some words or miss-spell something. Guten Nacht er i mean good night :D
There are only 2 sets of cylinders. Basically, each one of those cylinder blocks is called a cylinder. The top one houses a piston valve, whilest the bottom one houses the piston rod itself.
Eric, I love your review videos and I think it would be really cool if when you talk about surviving historic engines, you splice in a photo of one in your video. I understand that might be difficult with copyright, but I'm sure a quick google search (what I do as you call off the road numbers) will give you a royalty free photo source.
WOW, what an awesome engine! The detail is amazing and 4lbs 13oz of pulling power? Best puller I've ever seen! Anyways, amazing engine and fantastic review as always Eric! Thanks bro!
Quick question here. Hi Eric. This model has overfire jets on the sides of the firebox. On the C&O, these overfire jets appeared on the higher number locomotives so the Lionel models numbered 1601, 1604 and 1608 are not prototypical. If they would have numbered them 1648 or 1650 (like the JLC model) then the jets are correct. Now, that being said, do you know if the Virginian Blueridge locomotives had the overfire jets like your model? I'm not sure. I guess I could search for photos.
I missed your videos! I am starting a RUclips Channel strictly on trains! I already have an Instagram account with the same name! I just started and am at 85 or so followers!
The whistle sounds similar to N&W freight whistles. Listen to the A some time. It's a beauty. Great video. Nice layout. I have an old MTH C&O Allegheny with Proto 1 sound system. The whistle is fantastic. Like you, I don't know if it's correct to the locomotive, but it sounds great.
Agreed, really nice locomotive and super whistle. I also mostly enjoy the crew talk. However, Lionels most annoying feature on their "crew talk" is when the dispatcher tells the engineer of a STEAM locomotive to "Start her up and stand by." like the engineer will just turn the key on a steam locomotive ignition and and it is suddenly ready to go. Really, Lionel ? Anyone with Lionel ever been on a real steam locomotive ?
@Eric's Trains - is the GAP between the Engine & Tender supposed to look like that? It still looks as if there is a small GAP & the "DROP PLATE" does NOT fully REACH the other side.
The H-8s and AGs came equipped with an air operated whistle control valve. This meant you could not quill the whistle on a real life 2-6-6-6.
Don't you think Train Simulator could use this in their game?
An absolute brute of an engine!!! Great choice Eric! Thanks for the video!
I was at the B & O train museum and saw one of these in real life, they are really big!
or C & O I forget
trains rule well its B & O Museum but C & O is the Chesapeake & Ohio line ones m8. I saw mine at The henry Ford museum
That's what she said 😏
@@necjerseyrailfan7500 haha thats what she said funny joke
Outside of the VL Big Boy, probably one of the best steamers Lionel has made. Nice review.

I wish there was a law against scrapping steam locomotives!
Walter's Trains yeeeeeessss thank you

Me, too.
I really like that unique whistle never heard something quite like it before
Another cool feature in the cab is you can open the access to the firebox. I haven't seen that on any other steam engines and it is nice to see the engine go by with a nice glow of red coming from the cab. Great video Eric!!
I'm a fan of the allegheny!!!!! I'm so excited!!!!!!!! :D
I love this thing!
Awesome engine, I'm glad you actually ran the thing relatively fast. I like watching them go fast.

Great Job on the Virginia Blue Ridge steam locomotive I like all of your reviews Eric and so does my little step brother
Excellent! Thanks Eric!!
Such a cool locomotive!!
Lionel first made the C&O Allegheny in the late 1990s. It was equipped with TMCC and was numbered 1601.
Great review as always Eric!! Thanks again.........
I love the Allegheny Locomotive! I also love the Virginian Railway! One of my favorite railroad’s

I'm not a train hobbyist... but.. I want the 1601 (saw it at Henry Ford)! Thank you for this great video. :)

Very nice Eric!

Love your Videos best ever Very Educational videos keep doing what you are doing
I've seen the 1604.
Great video! Hopefully you won't have to tear the layout down in 6 months. And I hope you can do a video someday with a lionel PRR 4-4-4-4 T-1 (if possible)
844Steamtrain I saw ur vids earlier today and I saw this comment and I was like " hey that's him"
yo i subscribed to u 844Steamtrain! :)
what do you mean by (if possible)
I know
Great idea!
Hey Eric, do you have an idea of when you'll appear in Classic Toy Trains magazine? Or O Gauge Railroading?
I got the C&O 1608, and I gotta agree with you. It’s absolutely gorgeous and it is a fantastic runner.
Beautiful engine and layout! But please crank up that smoke! Love that look of a steamer working hard belching out it's exhaust!
Holy crap you have a Green Bay route hopper? I live right by Green Bay.
Love this locomotive
@ERIC'S TRAINS - This is a POWERFUL STEAM ENGINE and accurate to the REAL Steam Engine, as you CONFIRMED when you made a statement regarding its "PULLING POWER." There should be NO NEED to "Double Head" this Engine as you stated because it is STRONG enough on its own.
Oh and yeah... the whistle is prototypical.
I love your trains
The engine that destroyed K-line! (I have the K-line copy, love that engine).
The whistle is perfect!
I agree
I love this locomotive
I love the Virginian Allegheny, but I'm also thinking about the C&O Allegheny. Which one would you prefer?
PVMWildcatMJ 12190 they're both essentially the same
If I had it my way, atleast one of all existing classes of articlulateds would be operational.
I hope lionel's upcoming lionmaster version has the same whistle...sounds awesome.
That is a really nice steam engine
Great review as usual Eric. What was that buzzing sound when u were running the engine.... ? speaker buzz?
fantastic
Well Eric...

Great review as usual!!! Even though i will never be able to afford this. 😭
Eric, I hope you do a review on the AT&SF 3000 2-10-10-2, I would like to see what you have to say about it
Terminator X I don't own one. it was released back in 2009
i believe i forgot to put, "when you or if you get it" i sometimes type too fast and i forget some words or miss-spell something. Guten Nacht er i mean good night :D
the whistle is very accurate. this sounds exactly like the whistle in dearborn
It accualy would be cool if one of these engines was restored to working order again
There are only 2 sets of cylinders. Basically, each one of those cylinder blocks is called a cylinder. The top one houses a piston valve, whilest the bottom one houses the piston rod itself.
Just picked up C/0 Alleganny engine they're Beautiful and get Runner and pullers
hi eric i watched you make this video on your webcams😄

I understand that might be difficult with copyright, but I'm sure a quick google search (what I do as you call off the road numbers) will give you a royalty free photo source.
Imagine this... the Vision big boy, and the Triplex. 3 thundering gods would be on the track
I think the pickups should only be on the Tenders for Model Steam locos. Except Tank engines
Very great looking engine to me
WOW, what an awesome engine! The detail is amazing and 4lbs 13oz of pulling power? Best puller I've ever seen! Anyways, amazing engine and fantastic review as always Eric! Thanks bro!
it almost looks like the tunnel openings are too small for the big engines like these, meaning the articulated engines
Do you think either 1601 or 1604 will be restored for excursions
Quick question here. Hi Eric. This model has overfire jets on the sides of the firebox. On the C&O, these overfire jets appeared on the higher number locomotives so the Lionel models numbered 1601, 1604 and 1608 are not prototypical. I refuse to believe that the C&O units had a flat line "hooter" whistle.
Is the smoke unit kinda loud, or is it just me? Great review & great engine btw!
You are so awesome and nice
How exactly do you measure the pulling power of all these models? Do you just keep adding cars until it can’t pull anymore?
I have a scale that measures the pulling power
The number of the Beast
Can you review an EMD SW9?
The whistle sounds like a power router!
Nice shot at 22:15
I seen that locomotive when I was 3 or 4
That crew dialogue! lol
It's Sam! From Thomas and friends
yes
The exact type of engine.
Fully agree
I missed your videos! I am starting a RUclips Channel strictly on trains! I already have an Instagram account with the same name! I just started and am at 85 or so followers!
H20 Lacrosse says H2O LACROSSE mind you

This is sort of irrelevant to the video but you should paint a locomotive for AWRX ^-^
Can you mth engines with Lionel legacy?
140 views in the first 9 minutes of this video on RUclips!
❤
Ive seen c&o 1604
I’ve seen 1601 at Henry Ford.
i dont want to scrap a engine
Omg i got it .it just killer engine way better then big boy
Lionel be like; WHY U UPLOAD DURING SCHOOL? THE KID COULD BEG THIER PARENTS EIRLIER AND THEN WE MAKE MONEY FASTER...!!
?
Do the 1225!
Owen's Trains first change your profile picture
it look like sam from thomas and friends
21:00 anyone else hear squeaking?
Ben's Trains sure did and again when it passes a second time I honestly thought it was a speaker error.
My Lionel JLC Y6b 2200 squeaks time to time. I found the squeak location is at the front section of the engine.
the allegheny sounds like its near the tender
Noisy smoke unit, I'd guess
It’s the fan for the smoke unit. No worries, it’s supposed to do that.
I love Big boys in love Big I think you just 4
1309
.don't think u the only one have these engines i just start collecting and already obtain 3 of the largest engine 32inch🤣🤣
Where sales poor on a 666 engine ?
The virginian 906 is the basis for sam the virginian engine
Sounds like 1218's whistle.
Julian Koehler
Lol not even close.
first

get g scale
can you shout me out im a 15 year old boy that loves your trains please
LIMA MARION RAILFAN i am 15 and i havent refereed to myself as “boy” in ages. your a TEEN ok?
@Eric's Trains - is the GAP between the Engine & Tender supposed to look like that?
It still looks as if there is a small GAP & the "DROP PLATE" does NOT fully REACH the other side.
It could be done a litter better
