  • You don't often see games from the ZX Spectrum and C64 make their way to the NES but they certainly happened, and usually under odd circumstances -- they could be unlicensed, they could tie-in with a movie, they could be only available on Famicom...there's all sorts of curios here, even if most of them are kinda bad. Enjoy!

    I'm guessing that Ultimate's historical relationship with Jaleco was a factor in the creation of the Knight Lore port. For those who are unaware, Ultimate (as Ashby Computer Graphics / A.C.G.) used to develop arcade games for Jaleco.

  • @KuraIthys
    @KuraIthys 4 года назад +6

    lol. Maybe it's the programmer in me, but I have a hard time seeing consoles and microcomputers as all that different.
    Doesn't help that there are a few systems that were both...
    I mean, there was a consolised C64... The XEGS...
    Both of those are essentially stripped down microcomputers.
    Though arguably the XEGS isn't even that, since it has a keyboard, and still supports all the accessories of the Atari XE computers...
    And of course the Atari 5200, which is literally an atari 8 bit micro with less RAM and slightly different OS ROM, but with all the connectors that the micros had removed.
    (In fact, the entire Atari 8 bit microcomputer chipset started life as a console, but was reworked to make a microcomputer instead...)
    And need I remind anyone why the famicom is called the famicom? Given that it originally shipped with a keyboard, tape drive, and a version of Basic?
    Or, for that matter, that Nintendo's first inclination was to bring the Famicom to the US as the AVS microcomputer, but they were told this was a very bad idea?
    Yeah...
    The line between a microcomputer and a game console is pretty blurry, in all honesty.
    Slap a keyboard on it and some writeable storage media, and your console is now a microcomputer...

    • @jmp01a24
      @jmp01a24 4 года назад

      Consoles are the cheap mans home computer. A substitute for the poor people.

    • @KuraIthys
      @KuraIthys 4 года назад +2

      True up to a point. RAM certainly made a decent difference.
      Though storage is more ambiguous. The famicom Disk system is the same solution as a microcomputer, but for different reasons.
      And the rise of the CD-ROM radically altered games both on consoles and computers...
      The SNES of course was the master of hiding expansion hardware in cartridges without telling anyone.
      But yes, I suppose RAM is a factor.
      Though it's also a bit circular.
      You see this when CD based consoles became common.
      For a given level of game complexity, a CD based system needs considerably more RAM than a cartridge based one.
      The Amiga needed that 512k or more of RAM as much because of how slow a floppy disk drive is as any other reason.
      And that's to say nothing of the wholly transparent upgrades to storage that cartridge based systems got.
      After all, the Super Mario Bros is 40 kilobytes, but towards the end of the system's life there were games using 768 kilobytes.
      Cartridge based systems are a tradeoff in that regard (This is true of microcomputers as much as consoles, since frequently the microcomputers also supported cartridges alongside other options).
      ROM is extremely expensive.
      But on the other hand, ROM is also in many cases a direct substitute for having more RAM...
      Because where you use a floppy drive (or worse, a tape), you have to copy a bunch of things into RAM that you then never modify afterwards.
      All that graphics and sound data that never changes? That needs to be in RAM when your storage is slow, but can be in ROM where a cartridge is present (usually - the n64 cannot read directly from cartridge. Only DMA from the cartridge to memory. But it can still do that much faster than the alternatives.)
      Cost does matter though.
      This is why CD's won out after all.
      If you look at the mid 90's...
      If money is no object, you use a cartridge.
      If you're on a budget, you use a CD (or before that, a floppy disk, and before that, a tape. In each case the justification is lower cost, primarily.)
      The proof of this is the Neo Geo with it's 256 megabyte cartridges - something which the n64 also natively supports, but never had in practice.
      Why? Because 64 megabytes cost $35 even in 2000, but while the Neo Geo can justify a cartridge that costs hundreds, especially for the arcade machines, a home system cannot.
      Meanwhile the CD costs all of $0.10 to manufacture...
      Anyway, it all just depends on how you look at things really.
      A computer is a computer, underneath it all.
      The rest is just form factor issues...
      lol. The irony of calling the console the cheap man's option though...
      I mean, yes. But the games were so much more expensive on average...

    • @blatherskite3009
      @blatherskite3009 4 года назад +1

      @Lassi Kinnunen Yes, it was mainly console's lack of storage - the inability to store the large temp-files and save-files required for features like persistent worlds - that led to that widening 90s gap between complex PC games and simpler console fare.
      The original Xbox console was (IIRC) the first console with an internal hard-drive as standard. "As standard" is the vital part, because it meant devs could make proper use of it and could create games that required an HDD to work. Voila, previously PC-only games like Morrowind started appearing on consoles, and the gap closed.

    Watching your channel all the time, it makes me think I was born a bit too late. Never really was around for the microcomputer era. Played a bit of the c64 that my cousin had, and I remember finding it bizzare he had games on cassettes as I'd only ever seen cartridge games. Cassettes were for music I thought, but I was only 4.
    But now trying to play a lot of these games it's difficult. They're often so different in how they're designed, even compared to the consoles around at the same time. But I'm trying to persevere, and get recommendations from your videos. I do love a bit of Boulder Dash and stuff like that that's pretty much arcade game gameplay. I need to get myself one of those THE C64 consoles, or whatever it's called. Seems a lot simpler than trying to get an old one and having to learn how to program to be able to use it. But yeah there's so many gems on these computers that are great and are different and are very European, or very British, and it's such a nice contrast from playing American and Japanese games. The few European games had as a kid in the mega drive I loved to bits, like James Pond II

    In the US, for some reason, the Codemasters games are looked down upon. From a technical standpoint, the programmers involved did a lot of stuff that was truly impressive and generally made the NES sing. Sure, the graphics themselves were not necessarily up to the detail of the Japanese games being released, but compared to the American developed games, they were leagues ahead, and some of the Euro originals for the system like Ultimate Stuntman seem to take more shit than I think they deserve. Again, they're not especially great to look at, but they did a lot technically and in the gameplay area, they're not too bad. If you want to compare an American effort to the average codemasters game, look at something like Ghoul School. I had the unfortunate personal goal of completing that game to see if they even finished it. They did, but damn did they cut all kinds of unnecessary corners. The Kitchen brothers aren't terrible game designers, but I feel they just didn't know the 6502 (or maybe the NES implementation of it) enough to actually just make a good game.
    Anyway, thanks for another interesting video in retro game land.

If the whole point was to port an Ultimate game, I think something like Jetpac or Lunar Jetman would have been more within their ability and probably would have run better given the Famicom/NES's display chip is inherently tile-based.

    Thing is Uridium was 10 quid and could be played with an arcade quality joystick but Last Starfighter cost 4 or 5 times as much and forced you to use the useless NES joypad

      Useless nes joypad?

    • @madcommodore
      @madcommodore Год назад +1

      @@ultrairrelevantnobody1862 The only two D-pads worth a crap are 1, the official 6 button Megadrive joypad, the Xbox 360. All the others are naff and a real pain in the butt to get diagonals 100% of the time you actually want/need them. And "forced" because whether you like/hate the NES pads/crap NES compatible joysticks wired for NES ports you are screwed because Uridium requires an aracde quality joystick like the Euromax Zipstik and none were ever made for NES :)

    Kim. I absolutely love your videos. They're so informative and cross the US console/ UK micro-computer divide perfectly.
    However...It's not pronounced en-chancer!!!😂 Was recently playing loads of emulated NES games and didn't realise (until then) how many micro to nes ports had been made. I'm sure this is the first video on it (without checking). Keep up the good work

    Not a big fan of Turrican in general, but I honestly find the NES version to be barely playable. Your sprite is so close to the edge of the screen.

    The NES/Famicom had a large number of games ported from the MSX Computer. Zanac is one of them, and a very good one!
