Iced-Up Baron: Emergency RTB and landing at KTVL

  • I attempt a flight from KTVL to KMMH in icing conditions in the REP BE58 Baron, immediately get way too much ice after takeoff, and have to make an emergency landing back at KTVL in below-minimums conditions and full power.
The first part of the flight is on PilotEdge, but I disconnect when it becomes obvious that I will not be able to continue the flight. In retrospect, I could have stayed on PilotEdge and declared an emergency, which would have been more realistic.

EGTs look like you never leaned the engines. If so, that didn't help. Nice job getting back on the ground.

cool video... frustrating realism though with no visual indications of icing and also a mismatch in the visible conditions and the effect of icing considering the equipment. What appears to be light snow shouldn't result in those effects with fully deiced and booted Baron. Hoping FS2020 does a better job of simulating real weather conditions...

I’ve since downloaded a FlyWithLua plugin that gives you a diagram of how much icing your surfaces are collecting. It’s not a perfect solution, but at least I can make more informed decisions in-flight. It wasn’t just light snow - the ActiveSky forecast also called for freezing fog, which was surely the culprit.

What a job! Great piloting skills. Would the SR22 have done any better? Thanks for the great video.

Both the SR22 (with FIKI TKS) and the Baron are certified for flight into moderate icing only, so unfortunately, probably not.
