Toonami and Adult Swim made anime mainstays, but I recently discovered SciFi Channel's Saturday anime. I didnt see it back in the 90s, but I wish I did
Toonami -did- start the boom. Sure they weren't the first to air anime in North America, but are you really trying to say shows like A-Ko and Urusei Yatsura were accountable for the huge 2000's anime presence in the states?
Don't forget Armitage, Tank Police, Iria, Akira, etc. Saturday Anime started the boom by giving people awesome shows to watch during the normal dead air block of 9am-12pm on Saturday, these movies were the first on-air Anime and led to allot of fans and created the model Toonami used to promote their shows. When it was cancelled Toonami got a huge swell in viewers and they demanded good quality shows, otherwise it would have kept Johney Quest until it was cancelled, just like AS and Cowboy Bebop
I miss the 9am to 12pm block on Sci-Fi that was ACTUALLY named Saturday Anime, now THAT block had some of the best shows. Akira, Vampire Hunter D, Gall Force, Iria, Armitage, Demon City Shinjuku, Roujin Z, Venus Wars, even it's mid-grade stuff kicked ass! I mean, come on, the Tank Police! All other arguments are invalid at that point, police in TANKS! RIP Saturday Anime, you are missed, all except you Robot Carnival.
Saterday is just not enough! 1am is to late...its not fair that shows like Tim & Eric are still on, and shows like Big O and Inuyasha are put on the death block.
@rudedogmc3 I remember when A.S. was all Anime and Regular Cartoons like Family Guy and Featurama. I just wish for like 3 times a year they would do a All Anime week on A.S. as a nod to the good old Days, but it would be a Secret plain in my mind. If they saw how many people watched that Special each time they might just have a idea and Give Toonami its own Station, All Action Cartoons and Anime all day long, with Uncut Shows after 11pm...that is my dream to see that happen one day.
@GrantDaMan100 I know really Saturday night was Anime Nite and I really looked forwar to it now that it isn't it pisses me off and I watch it only for FMA Brotherhood and Bleach. I 2nd the idea Saturday Night is Anime Night
Everyone needs to stop whining. AD has to play what gets ratings, and a repeat of robot chicken has more views per night than any anime. Anime is big in America, but not that big. Bleach used to be the mos viewed anime but people soon tuned of. we're just lucky enough they brought toonami back and we're nice enough to put inuyasha back. Quit bitching people, want anime, then watch and support the only channels who cater to us anime fans. Thank you AD.
I remember A-ko, Green Legend Ran, E.Y.E.S. of Mars, Urusei Yatsura, Tenchi Muyo movie 1, Cassahn, and so much more. Man I really miss those days, and yeah, it irks me when people credit Toonami for starting the boom, they just copied what was already being done in spades by then. I honestly don't know anyone who liked Robot Carnival though, sure it had it's moments but overall it was pretty bland, tasteless, and boring, still better than Naruto and Inuyasha though.

@bakuformer00 I always forget to call it that but it was the foul language and adult stuff that stopped me from saying that. Thumbs up.
