    • @johnathannail6499

      Nope, the sole design criteria was to use sunlight to bake a cupcake, the box lined with foil was a primer and most everyone else stuck with that

    Mate, you are a legend. I was dropping things at our local recycling shop and someone just dropped off an old projection TV. I run a local stargazing business and am looking to add some things of interest for daytime shows for schools. You're right - these TVs are heavy, but I couldn't wait to get it home and start extracting the Fresnel lens, which I did just as the sun set. Came out easily and I can't wait to try it tomorrow. The next step is the frame - I will use your design and just looked at the video - wonderful. Well explained and should be good fun putting it together.

    I'm thinking it would be rather neat to focus it on a closed container of water, with a hose leading the steam away to a fan (like an old computer fan). That would basically make it a souped up solar generator and I bet you can get a fair amount of juice out of that.
    Perhaps a future project?

    I made this thing it was easy. I was very excited about this and had plans to use it as a solar forge. There was a pile of TVs in the junk yard. One of them was a projection tv. Unfortunately the lense is not only opaque but the beam is focused in a line.The temperature is 300-360 degrees. However, it is not a failure. The tv came with a sheet of dark grey plastic, and the beam from the lense is the perfect temperature for quickly softening the plastic so that I can shape it into anything I like- I used it to make a fine sheath for my diving knife. It does not burn the plastic like fire does, and because it is solar the heat penetrates the inside of opaque plastic heating the whole piece equally inside and out like a microwave. Very impressive way to quickly heat plastic to molding temp.

    Make sure you wear eye protection people especially for fresnel lens. Even for magnifying glasses you should wear eye protection, that small dot of light can effect your eyesight over time as you'll notice that the dot of light burns an image onto your eye. So really you should wear a welders mask when using the frenel lens.

    If you have a spring cleanup in your area go drive around. Take a phillips and flat screwdriver (or cordless drill) and you can open one of these up in about 10 minutes to get what you need and not have to worry about discarding the shell of the tv. In the last month I have picked up about 10 of these lenses in my area. I grabbed all the optics too, the color from the lenses are good for over flashlights for the kids and that lense assembly you took apart, if you turn on the flashlight on your phone and put that in front of it you can get a heck of a spot light out of it. Good luck!

      ha ha, yeah but you could defocus the lens a bit like he did in the video to "Spread" the heat out and lower it. Btw, I was thinking about this again and why wouldn't it be possible to power a steam engine with this? Couldn't you build a cast iron boiler and focus a couple of these lenses at it to get it to produce steam and run an engine hooked up to a generator? Someone needs to try this, we already do it on larger scales (see the solar array in Arizona).

    People were throwing these rear projection TVs away, then the scrap metal scroungers would come along and gut the old televisions and leave the Fresnel lenses laying around. As the sun would change angles the abandoned lenses were starting fires in the alleys at random. Fences, dry grass brush, trash, pretty much anything. I have 15 or 20 of these lenses tucked between the shed and the house now, out of the sun.

      Khanh Duong Phan there's also the problem that this focuses the energy into heat. great for burning or melting things, but not great for moving things. to use this as a power source for anything would have about the same effect as merely lighting a match as a power source. you need more than just that, as heat alone isn't a power source. also, a much more effective and (based of price for the amount of energy required) nuclear power is much better than fossil fuels, but that doesn't make it a better alternative...

      You obviously never heard for Stirling engines with solar power :) Try to search it in Google :) They use Magnifiers, Lenses, Mirrors.. All kind of stuff to concentrate Solar power and turn it in to energy. Well It is not the best way, but it can work for some people with some building / mechanical skills

    • @Kahadi
      @Kahadi 10 лет назад

      Georgi Ivanov well, a Stirling engine is not just one magnifying glass, so still, just what he made in this video would not get a car moving

    Hey, have you ever thought about pairing this panel with a boiler, steam engine and electrical generator? The thought being to use the panel you have, focus it on a boiler which delivers steam to a small steam engine which in turn uses a drive shaft/belt to deliver the energy to an electrical generator? Would be a cool experiment (pardon the pun). My only concern would be the pressure associated with the 2000 degree cooker on the boiler which was addressed by governors well over a century ago. Have heard of people using parabolic mirrors to focus the beam on the boiler, but those look spooky to me as the hot water is up in the air and focused skyward rather than downward as your cooker shows. I could see placing the magnifying lens of your cooker on a gamble that would track for the angle of the sun ensuring a consistent heat on the boiler. If you used distilled water, you would recirculate condensed water back into the system to be reheated reducing deposits in the boiler and piping.

    I wonder if I could use this and the molten salt turbine to get more power than a solar panel of equal size.

    • @Eli7PM
      @Eli7PM 9 лет назад +1

      Meep Changeling This has been my question, why aren't they using magnifying glasses to maximize the efficiency of thermal solar power plants.

    • @iMattLewis
      @iMattLewis 9 лет назад +2

      +Eli P. The amount of energy coming from the sun is always the same, even if you 'magnify' it is still the same amount of energy, just distributed over a smaller area-hence the extremely high temperatures(1000oC+) seen in this video.
      The 'efficiency' of a solar thermal power plant has nothing to do with the amount of energy coming in, only how much of this is converted to electrical power. Which has more to do with the thermodynamics and physical constraints of the electrical generator, etc
      However magnifying glasses would be beneficial if the focal point of the power plant needed to be extremely small. Although usually they are large as you don't need extremely high temperatures to produce electrical power. (steam=100oC, molten salt~600oC)

    • @Eli7PM
      @Eli7PM 9 лет назад

      iMattLewis thank you for all this info. However I was referring to all the space they take using mirrors, they could have less mirrors with magnifying glasses, and make the receiver more resistance to higher temperatures so the molten salt doesn't evaporate but melt it.

    • @iMattLewis
      @iMattLewis 9 лет назад +1

      Eli P. But by making the receiver more resistant you are decreasing the overall efficiency of the system(solar energy>electrical energy)
      In the end the more space you have occupied by mirrors and/or magnifying glasses aimed at the focal point the more sunlight you can capture and the more electrical energy you can produce.

    • @StarForgers
      @StarForgers 9 лет назад +2

      +iMattLewis The focal point doesn't matter unless the focal point is the most efficient point on the solar panel. The problem isn't how much power is coming in with solar panels it is how efficient the solar panel is.
      Also I have heard that even if solar panels do get more energy with more heat/direct power coming in there is a point at witch it would be inefficient or obviously damage the solar panel once the thermal energy has been focused into a specific smaller area.
