Among all the metals, gold is about the best at reflecting IR light, and most of the heat is carried by the IR light. It's also pretty good at conducting heat.
Yes! The JWST uses gold coating on its mirrors to better reflect IR lights that its instruments will process.
So, they’re trying to get things to catch fire and/or explode - and one of the first things they blow up is a fire extinguisher. Brilliant! 😃

The reason they're confident is because gold has a pretty high melting point and because it's reflective, a lot of the heat energy is reflected off of the bar. sand it and make it less shiny and it'd more than likely get much hotter.
I love how they aren't excited about having the gold, but melting it.

But thermal conductivity is probably involved with how quickly the heat is spread. They do not reach melting point on the large bar because the thermal conductivity is not allowing heat to build up around the point of contact.
Also, very little convection is probably occurring. Most of the transfer is radiation.
