My mother was fluent in 7 languages including Spanish , my brother in law is Spanish , Megain has definitely rehearsed those sentences within an inch of her life. She knows nobody believes she’s fluent in Spanish. She doesn’t even speak English properly it’s all word salads that make no sense. I’d love someone to actually sit and have a conversation with her in Spanish. When they were in Canada , Michael Buble was there his wife speaks Spanish as she is Argentinian, Harry mentioned that Megain was fluent in Spanish , and was embarrassed when she couldn’t converse with her. What she does speak is LIES, she’s fluent in that.

She pronounces the "y" the way we pronounce it in Argentina and de "z and c" as you pronounce it in Spain. I'm not sure though, that anyone can learn to speak Spanish in just six months in a Spanish-speaking country, working 8 hours a day in an English-speaking environment. I think she wrote a short speech and memorized it, which is why she continued in her own language afterward. Nevertheless, it was a notable gesture and surely very well-received by the host country. It was probably worth the effort. I'm not her fan though ...
A speech can be memorised, not a conversation. If she's fluent in Spanish she would be conversing in Spanish with the people of Columbia but that didn't happen. what a LIAR!!!

Both my parents were born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I speak with that accent and she is NOT speaking the Argentinian accent! My maternal grandparents were born in Spain. I speak Spanish and I can tell you it's easy to memorise a few sentences of very easy, obvious phrases. It's IN CONVERSATION that we are challenged. When someone asks a question, off script, that we have to respond to, this is the test: the tenses and grammar are key.. it's easy to talk in the present tense and be prepared for a little speech of a few sentences that she has memorised. Yes, I agree with Roguie about the Argentine accent! It's NOT! This woman is the most ghastly false character ever put before us. I had to learn Spanish when I moved to Spain. I am told I have an English accent. There are many different accents and dialects in Spain. I have to speak with the lisp which the Americans don't have. After eleven years I am still not fluent. In my village in Granada they don't pronounce the S. Esta becomes Eta. Meghan is not fluent but she speaks Spanish well. Her English is pretty good also. Not exactly RP but passable.

Most of the Royal family will try to learn a short greeting and thanks in the language of the country they're visiting. The difference is, once their prepared foreign language piece is given they don't sit there for 5 seconds basking in the praise of the locals for having done it. They wait politely for that reaction to subside then continue their speech in English. It's an honour they give to the host country, not something they do for personal praise or an attempt to grab the spotlight.
Ah,the senior Royals actually speak the languages. The Queen spoke excellent French, Prince Phillip, native German. King Charles's German is very good, did a whole speech to the Bundestag in it. He also speaks Welsh. And French of course. Don't know about Wills.

I saw two interviews she did. She told the host she spoke fluent French ‘X’ number of years. Not long after that I saw her do a different host where she told the host the same thing except she changed the number of years she studied. She was only in Argentina Embassy for six weeks, hardly enough time to speak Spanish. It was an internship and her Uncle, with strong connections (now deceased), paved the way in for her. Her internship came to an end when she failed a key test. She did not attend his funeral either but that's not surprising.

She memorized this. While I was on my mission trips to the Dominican Republic they gave me respect for the effort to speak to the patients as I gave our helpers respect for their attempts to speak English. However, I would never brag that I was fluent.
A lovely example of someone speaking in a language not her native tongue is Queen Mary of Denmark, when she was still a Princess, giving an entire heart-felt speech to a large and formal dinner in celebration of her husband, now King Frederik's birthday. Really sweet and moving.
Also Queen Maxima of Netherlands is fluent in many languages (she is Native of Argentina). Actually many royals are fluent in other languages. But of course MM is a show off.

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands is originally from Argentina. In the engagement interview with (then) Prince Willem Alexander she could already speak Dutch. Believe me, Dutch is one of the hardest languages to learn. She invested in knowing the Dutch language, culture etcetera. Yes she made some mistakes. But overall she really did her best in trying to learn. Meghan did nothing to learn anything about the United Kingdom, not even the National Anthem!

When she watched the show they prepared for them and the dancers sang something about how their freedom was stolen from them (or something like that) she was all smiling as usual and had no clue what they were saying. @zhmw It's the people who were saying she has an Argentine accent even the author of her biography was saying such and such. OK it's not Meghan. Maybe when she was still living in Buenos Aires she had the Argentine accent and now it's been a while she's back in her homeland after living in GB for less than two years.

Yes but usually if you learn or are taught a language you pick up the accent of the person or voice you leaning the language from...Eg as Jesus says if you are taught British English or US English. Same as Italian..Eg at ends of spectrum whether taught by someone from the North or South of Italy..or Paris and Calais very different.
Does she ever speak in free conversation? Non rehearsed speeches? There is where we will be able to learn her exact level of Spanish speaking skill. Remember, she was clapping & laughing at the traumatic dance earlier.

He'd learnt some Spanish phrases and questions but got in a bit of a pickle translating his questions/answers with a student. Castilian Spanish...my stepdad spoke Spanish with Spanish with the "th". He would hammer me for speaking Mestizo Spanish (learning at school). When in high school, my teacher would hammer me for using an "elitist" accent...I gave up on it until I went to the university 20 years later. LOL!

I am from Spain and we don't use "esposo"but "marido". She also said " abraZo" with "thay" pronunciation. It is a very neutral accent as you said. If she had an Argentinian accent, she should have pronounced "yo" completely differently. She spent the night before studying not improvisation at all!

My mother was fluent in 7 languages including Spanish , my brother in law is Spanish , Megain has definitely rehearsed those sentences within an inch of her life. She knows nobody believes she’s fluent in Spanish. She doesn’t even speak English properly it’s all word salads that make no sense. I’d love someone to actually sit and have a conversation with her in Spanish. I speak Spanish and I can tell you it's easy to memorise a few sentences of very easy, obvious phrases. It's IN CONVERSATION that we are challenged. When someone asks a question, off script, that we have to respond to, this is the test: the tenses and grammar are key.. it's easy to talk in the present tense and be prepared for a little speech of a few sentences that she has memorised. Yes, I agree with Roguie about the Argentine accent! It's NOT! This woman is the most ghastly false character ever put before us. I had to learn Spanish when I moved to Spain. I am told I have an English accent. There are many different accents and dialects in Spain. I have to speak with the lisp which the Americans don't have. After eleven years I am still not fluent. In my village in Granada they don't pronounce the S. Esta becomes Eta. Meghan is not fluent but she speaks Spanish well. Her English is pretty good also. Not exactly RP but passable.

Most of the Royal family will try to learn a short greeting and thanks in the language of the country they're visiting. The difference is, once their prepared foreign language piece is given they don't sit there for 5 seconds basking in the praise of the locals for having done it. They wait politely for that reaction to subside then continue their speech in English. It's an honour they give to the host country, not something they do for personal praise or an attempt to grab the spotlight.

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands is originally from Argentina. In the engagement interview with (then) Prince Willem Alexander she could already speak Dutch. Believe me, Dutch is one of the hardest languages to learn. She invested in knowing the Dutch language, culture etcetera. Yes she made some mistakes. But overall she really did her best in trying to learn. Meghan did nothing to learn anything about the United Kingdom, not even the National Anthem!

She pronounces the "y" the way we pronounce it in Argentina and de "z and c" as you pronounce it in Spain. I'm not sure though, that anyone can learn to speak Spanish in just six months in a Spanish-speaking country, working 8 hours a day in an English-speaking environment. I think she wrote a short speech and memorized it, which is why she continued in her own language afterward. Nevertheless, it was a notable gesture and surely very well-received by the host country. It was probably worth the effort. I'm not her fan though ...

I took 3 years of Spanish in high school, in the ‘70’s and even I recognize it as regular old American Spanish. She’s CLEARLY very nervous. Because she’s a fraud. Her over pronunciation of “tardes” and “Columbia” is excruciating!!

Castilian Spanish...my stepdad spoke Spanish with Spanish with the "th". He would hammer me for speaking Mestizo Spanish (learning at school). When in high school, my teacher would hammer me for using an "elitist" accent...I gave up on it until I went to the university 20 years later. LOL!
