unfortunately, you said it wrong it's actually 5ml of acetic anhydride in sulfuric acid.
For years I been using the wrong tool to poke chemicals with! Lol!! Great video thanks for your time.
at least we know that we can have some pain relief after the apocalypse.
Now just add 10000% buffering agent, and you have a large barrel of aspirin, same as the OTC version.
Editing is really spot on the time lapse photography is exceptional on this channel.
In Biotech we did this with the same chemicals. It was very interesting. Thanks for the video.
Fun, like the improvised hot plate
hahaha that ghetto hotplate setup is genius
Man its uncanny. You sound like me... Reagent bottles near empty, tiny buchner funnel and flask. Having to diy my own hotplate.... Im serious.... Thats awesome! You earned my sub
My ethanol is always empty … mmm, yum!
getting acetic anhydride from ormarion i see
You could microwave reagents to melt them if you want.. a lab microwave would be good for reagents you don't want to put in your kitchen microwave, could probably pickup a cheap used one somewhere that's in okay condition
oh, so that's why I always failed on making this cheimcal, it's because I don't have the salicylic acid poking device!
The hotplate was great ;) Power supply with some nichrome wire.
finally!!! 😍😍😍
Device specifically produced for poking salicylic acid😆😆... most interesting description for a labware🤣
It's funny watching this. I am far more likely to use otc aspirin to make salicylic acid.
My GAA is precious. And acetic anhydride is the stuff of dreams.
Well I’ve got too much of each chemical so it doesn’t hurt me if any is wasted. Off screen theres also a 5L canister of GAA.
@@THYZOID While I have your ear, let me say how much I am enjoying your channel. You have been rather prolific, and I know how much effort that takes. My own channel has had a bit of a lull, but is not abandoned. Lots of other chem youtubers have been the same. In the meantime, it is great to have high quality, interesting and inspirational stuff coming across the feed. Thank you.
I appreciate it!
looks like speed lmao
Try activated charcoal for purification. Maybe it adsorb that orange stuff on the surface.
my old dear threw my 1l of acetic anhydride down the sink she did that with all my chemicals so bad for the environment and my wallet was well over 600 pounds worth of chemicals
Was she afraid u'd make heroin with it or so? 😂😂
cool
Will you extract fluorine from sodium fluoride or any fluorine source I have seen some fluorine gas react with sulfur I know fluorine is the most electronegative element but it would be fun to see some fluorine react violently with metals to make products like PtF⁶ Sf⁴ CoF³ etc.
Maybe
Haha fuck that.
Hi. Will you ever try to make 1-bromonaphthalene from naphthalene and bromine?
Send me a paper on it and I’ll try
What happened to your Hotplate one of mine broke since I was making taxol and a drop of sulfuric acid with the funnel landed on the hotplate it gave an EO2 error temp failure and the temp went to 350 deg C :( and that was a digital one. I got a 7 by 7 hotplate /stirrer and I use other methods like adding the acid with a bigger funnel 7 times the size (glass) learned the hard way. It was 3.5 years Old.
I melted lead with it for two hours
How were you able to order the AA? I thought they (Sordalab) don’t sell to individuals.
Good that you mentioned salicylic acids property of inducing nosebleed.
And you really should start using proper reaction mechanisms (no offense) 😂
Oh and seeing some more analytical characterizations (mp, TLC) would be nice as well, especially in this case between the supposed dirty and clean ASS.
How was the acetic anhydride made? Could it be Sulphur compounds/impurities
It was made by reacting acetyl chloride with anhydrous sodium acetate. The stuff from the big bottle was bought.
@@THYZOID Ohh okay 👌 I thought maybe you may have used Sulphur chlorides.. maybe it’s just the sulphuric reacting!
On another note.. I have know-one else to ask so I thought maybe you might be able to help or have an idea on dehydration of glacial acetic acid using polyphosphoric acid??
I’ve found patents on metaphosphoric being used however I’m unsure whether there’s much truth to them. I know sulphuric can be dehydrated to oleum this way though!
Thats one sexy hot plate
Any tips on how to dry acetic acid which is high concentration buy not quite glacial?
Just make it from sulfuric acid and anhydrous sodium acetate
@@THYZOID I dried my sodium acetate in an oven but I used sodium bisulfate to produce the acetic acid, that was obviously not anhydrous. Sulfuric acid is difficult here.
Bisulfate also works if you dry it beforehand
I liked this synthesis a lot. I did it a few times 7 years ago as a trainee. I recommend you to buy a "Organikum" to improve your lab skills. The recryst. could be performed in water, if you work fast, which results in large, colorless crystals. If you change your solvent for a recryst. you should always dry your product to ensure no solubility issues. Also dumping a lot of water to form solids encloses a lot of impurities into the amorphous solid, which is formed.
Is your vacuum pump resistant against chemicals? I would use a water pump.
It isn’t
How does it hold up?
Neat. Even more interesting is the HUGE jug of ethanol hahahaha
It’s cheaper to buy in bulk
It at least has a definite purity and I don’t have to waste my time. As mich ethanol as I use buying is worth it.
@@THYZOID Right. Especially in that quantity/frequency of use.
Think this is the one with the most ingredients ever in your projects i guess..
The barbituric acid one that failed probably used more chemicals
@@THYZOID ooh..still i didnt checked it.. will do
Activated charcoal?...
I have enough clean aspirin. It wouldn’t be worth the effort.
Did you make the acetic anhydride with the phosphorus pentoxide?
No I bought the big bottle. The Ac2O in the small bottle was made from AcCl and anhydrous sodium acetate. It was clear before mixing it with H2SO4.
@@THYZOID Ahh, I saw the video when you made it from AcCl. Maybe not good storing it mixed with sulfuric acid? I was just interested in seeing the anhydride made from P2O5. But thanks for the uploads anyways😊
@@experimental_chemistry I think it gets sulfonated over time. It can go from yellow and all the way to black charred looking given enough time. So it's basically sulfonated acetic anhydride I believe.
@@kallah4999 I’m pretty sure it doesn’t work… a myth? chemplayer did a video on it and couldn’t get it to work however it’s not longer on RUclips, try bitchute!
I have read one other attempt at it I can’t remember exactly how they did it but the pentoxide may have been dissolved in a chlorinated solvent however I may be wrong and there was ultimately no proof of this it was just posted on a forum.
@@noodlesoup2281 You just need to distill glacial acetic acid with the addition of phosphorus pentoxide. If I remember correctly it's about 30 - 35 mg P2O5 per 100 ml acetic acid and yields are around 90 - 95%.
