- In the latest in the series of "how to" micro lectures, Jason de Wilde demonstrates different techniques for recording a vocal. In this lecture, we look at how changing the distance between microphone and sound source can dramatically affect the overall sonic texture of the recording. We also look at how a pop filter is used to improve the sound quality by reducing the "plosives" caused by "p" and "b" sounds.

Audio @ Aim
The Bachelor of Music (Audio Technology) is a thorough and complete study of sound engineering and music technology. Throughout all stages of the course students are taught theoretical concepts which are supported with practical audio classes. Students will learn to collaborate with other other AIM students including composers, musicians, performers and actors to complete major projects. Students have access to our state of the art recording studios to complete their assessments. They also have opportunities to work on the many additional recording projects such as the Best of AIM CD which is produced each year. Students further their musical knowledge and skills with practical and theoretical units. Students who want to focus on technical production skills should choose the Audio Major. Associate study options enable all audio students to either specialise or broaden their study program.
The major study units of this audio course combines three streams of study:
1. Audio Technology
These units focus on the theoretical aspects of sound engineering including; acoustics, perception of hearing, digital audio, sampling, electronics and system design.
2. Recording Technology
These units focus on the practical techniques of recording and mixing sound. Students undertake practical classes in the numerous recording studios at AIM. Students also complete their own recording projects in each of these units. Projects increase in complexity as students progress through the course.
3. Digital Technology
These units focus on the software used in the field of sound and music production. All units are undertaken in the Digital Media lab at AIM. Each student has access to a digital audio workstation to complete their classes.

"hi katie how you doing?"
"im fi-...."
"GOOD!"
gabriel meurer wilde
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Ingenuine!!
We might never know how Katie was doing that day
I heard her say I'm good how are you. But he jumped in and just went on talking like he didnt really care for her reply. How rude.
Just getting her ready for working with producers.
For easy comparison of the vocal from different distance:
Far: 1:26
Medium: 2:30
Close: 3:29
Close with pop filter: 5:02
So apparently recording from distance makes the sound a half step higher xD
0:51 katie
"Hi Katie how're you doin?"
"Good th-"
"GOOD"
._.
The foot away mic placement captured Katie's vocals perfectly. After hearing her sing the same lyrics. I'm convinced the typical placement is ideal. Although, I am aware you may want to be really closer or really far away for a specific effect. Thank you for this video!
Beautifully sung - and thanks for the info!
very nice tutorial
I don't know why I remember dr.Harrison wells from the flash series during his explanation
thanks for the tutorial :D
this is definitely an excellent tutorial!! it sums up in just 6 minutes techniques that can be really usefull when recording vocals!!! Great video!
Thank you for the tutorial, helped a lot!
I love Jason's Microlectures!
Useful video, thank you
Good video, thank you. I learned something valuable.
I have a Sennheiser MK4 and a pop filter which looks like yours. But I found that type of filter to be cumbersome and I put a foam wind filter on the mic and it works great...highly recommended...along with the TLM101/MK4.
Thankyou for helping us out with your videos. What a splendid chap you are. Much apreciated
Great, informative video. thank you for sharing.
Thank you. Very helpful!
Great information, Lovely voice Katie.
This is really great.
thanks for the video. was helpful
Hey, great tutorial! Thanks! When the singer has sudden loud parts. Would you ask the singer to move back a bit?
Thanks! Just about to track vocals next week for an EP project. =)
This help me so much thank you 💞
Good video. Learned something new today. Thanks
ahaha i used the stocking over the coat hanger for a while. I've also made a vocalist sing inside a blanket fort at one time. There are so many options to effecting the way any sound comes through a microphone. Love theses videos. I think I've been jumping through them for the past two hours.
Ha that's great. Thanks Ariel.
Great Tutorial! Thank you for sharing this :)
0:50 She just got completely blanked.
to be fair, he was just introducing her and she accidentally started to make small talk :) I'm sure he didn't mean to blank her
"Hi, how are you" is probably the most common rhetorical question you'll ever meet.
beck clewlow Yeah! Really bad!
Wow that is some clear quality recording!
I just bought a Perception M microphone and I can't seem to get much input into it. I've turned the Input 1 level on my M-Box all the way up, but it just seems quite low still.
I like this, good video and really nice vocals.
I thought the same thing lol, but at the same time you have to appreciate the quality and accuracy of this video in only 6:32!
GREAT tutorial advice to
Nice to have a really pleasant singer in a demo for a change.
Maybe this is the best tutorial so far.
Thank you!
she has a very nice voice !
She's a great singer!
ACTUALLY HELPED ALOT
Can you record spoken words as voice over in stereo, or mono is the best way?
Thanks alot bro❤️
did you use the pad or low-cut on the U87??
Thanks !
Ha that's great. Well the U87 has been used for years to record all types of things and there's a reason it's an industry standard. It sounds awesome just on it's own. Cheers. Jase
Thanks so much Jason! Wonderful video! BTW who is the singer she sounds absolutely amazing!! Subbed :)
Very informative, it helped me a lot. But I found that there was some noise of a fan or something in the background with a bit of music when the man was talking, which was distracting.
Hello, I'm currently attempting to learn about audio and I'm curious about mic placement, what I have learned so far is this type of microphone should be at 10 or 11 clocks pointed at the mouth, you can notice at 3.36 the pop from the word jumping. Pop filters are useless unless you're trying to impress people, the poping issue does not matter when the mic is far, but the reverb is more of a problem now, In no way am I a professional.
Thanks, my microphone was too close while recording, how to fix the muffled sound please?
What's the difference if you mess around with the height of the mic? Do you prefer it right in front of the mouth or mouth level?
I literally just taught to myself, these tutorial lads should mention that headphones are vital, to account for begginers, about 5 seconds before he said it so subscription earned 😂👌
What a voice!
Hi there, I have got mxl drk condenser mic. It sounds really nice for my vocals but the signal goes up and down even with me slightest of movements during recording making the volume go up and down. I am talking about really small insignificant natural movements. Even they are causing my recordings to be ruined in this way. I have a little desk stand on which I am attaching my mic. How to resolve that issue?
sounds like an issue with the mic. If it's working properly, they should allow for a natural pickup taking into account the usual head movements. Since yours does not appear to be doing this, there's a fault. The only other thing is that it's pickup pattern is very narrow (like a shotgun mic) and therefore any slight movement away from the pickup will result in loss of volume. Try a different mic to see if that makes a difference.
What a beautiful voice. Anyone knows if she has any albums?
Good voice...
hello! where do you connect your XLR cable?
You can put the XLR cables into a mixing table or into an audio interface or into a preamp...
Hi there. The mic I'm using in this video is a Neumann U87. cheers. Jase
How to find which side is correct side for singing in condenser microphone
Audio Technica 4050 or Neumann tlm 103 are great and relatively affordable. I have both and like them a lot!
I'LL BE IN AUSTRALIA NEXT MONTH, I WOULD LOVE TO TOUR YOUR INSTITUTE DEPARTMENTS?
Another good technique for avoiding plosives and sibilance is to position the microphone slightly off-axis. It still captures the details but without catching that blast of air. Admittedly I see this done more for voiceover than for singing...
What kind of mic did you use?
Shes a great singer.
Hello, as a new Artist who uses the Pop Filter thought that even though Katie doesn't fit the mold of a "Singer" per say, neither did Adele.... Katie you have a beautiful Voice and when i get signed would love to have you do some back groung work with me Take care and keep the videos coming, from a new Fan, Mr. Luv
hi Katie how you doin? im yeah whatever good. lol
I'm guessing omni since Jason is moving all about the room and the sound is staying pretty consistent. Also, didn't notice a huge proximity boost when the singer got closer.
You should host some more videos mate⚡️⚡️
Is the microphone hook to the camera?
could someone please tell me what mic that is thanks
What is the microphone used in this video?
Lol half a foot away is apparently 3 feet away
***** 2:05 Id say thats 3 foot.
nah it looks to be about a foot
haha yeah i was just being a dick, its probably more like a foot and a half
At 2:05 she is indeed at 3 foot, like he said. At 2:34 she is supposedly at half a foot but I'd say it's 1.5 foot there.
yea. that was mad intimate
That pop filter killed the highs. I would have suggested metal mesh for best results. Still...thumbs up for making a really great video.
Yes, she's great. That's Katie Carr. I've done a lot of work with her over the last few years. I recorded her album last year, and this year she's been helping me with "Dead At The Desk" - an album I'm producing with a friend of mine. If you want to see more or her, check out my RUclips Channel. Cheers. Jase
What Microphone you recommended to buy I'm a amateur and I have not idea about microphones, for recording in studio,i'll apreciate your help.Thank you.
Shure SM57
Talon Meyer Do you know if the Shure sm27 is really good for vocals?
Yeahhh Is So good Man !!! Really Really is a professional microphone !!!! But i like this....Blue spark......!!!!
She is good, keep singing
What a wonderful voice! But you don't want to place the pop filter that close to the mic, because that way it doesn't filter the plosives properly, there's still a relatively high amount of energy hitting the capsule of the mic.
Which mic is that?
whats the recording pattern on the mic?
what is the background music?
I am newbie in singing field can anyone tell me which Mic better ? Under 100$ thanks. ALI texas
How long is half a foot in your country? I ask because she looked like she was a foot away.
What is mic name
you could have let us hear the difference in between distance to mic right after she sung!
How do you get such clean audio without all the noise???
I guess you are probably trying to record with computer's microphone, or using the computer audio input, that is always going to be noisy.
In the video, the mic is connected to a profesional audio interface, but if you buy a cheap usb condenser microphone like this one, you shouldn't hear any noise:
www.amazon.com/Microphone-Fifine-Condenser-Recording-669B/dp/B06XCKGLTP/ref=sr_1_4?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1521450797&sr=1-4&keywords=usb+microphone&dpID=41SKfZI6PHL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
It looks like a Neumann U67 or U87. I'm not sure of their visual differences, but it's likely one of those. The Yeti should do just fine for that purpose. Just play around with the position, as he's showing in this video, to see what works best for what you're trying to do.
How is it the room noise completely disappeared when she stared singing??
What Microphone is that??!
If that's half a foot i'm hung like a horse!!!!! lol
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Bradley's on the microphone with RAS MG
Well it seems I've fixed the volume problem, but it still sounds low quality. Like echoy and tinny? Do I need to mess around with EQ or something?
Too reduce echoes use pop filter and sing close to mic with as low gain as possible... or treat your room to echo less...tinny? I think thats dependent on mic quality
don't you mean Bradley's on the microphone with rasMG?:)
She is good
you use the -10db or low cut ???
Nice question. For vocals I tend not to use either the -10dB or the low cut on the mic itself. However, when the signal gets to the preamp, i almost always use the low cut. I find it easier to switch the low cut in/out when I'm in the control room, so that I can hear the difference. That's obviously best achieved on the pre-amp.
thanks for the question
You got it. There'd be a far better example of the distance effect in cardioid.
what is the microphone on this video?
neumann u87
Lol stocking Coat-hanger nice advice
Beringher, samson, u37. Get a mic a sam ash they have great mics under 100
GOD... I want to hear the rest of the song.
that mic sounds pretty good even without effects and processors... I want it lol:P
It's expensive arlf
I've heard it's a u87 mic
what is that microphone called?
Neumann U87
+jasondewilde Thank you!
Ohh wee she can sang!
U87 mic, he said at 1:14
