NYC Drone Ban - The End of The Hobby
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 1 окт 2024
- Flying drones in NYC will be much more difficult after the NYC UAV permit process. It will basically halt any recreational and professional pilots from operating a drone in NYC. Want to fly it anyway? Well then, you could face arrest and confiscation of your equipment.

Thank you, Eddie. Nice flying and interesting stories, as usual!
Some facts follow.
Before July 2023, flying drones within NYC was prohibited by ordinance. Now there is a (very restrictive and cumbersome) process for getting permitted to fly in the city. So that’s progress forward, as prior to 2023, if we were hired by a movie production company, the only way we could work was by flying illegally. I’m one pilot who turned down a moderate amount of film work because of the ordinance.
Now we can get permitted.
1) Must be Part 107 licensed
2) Requires 30 lead time for 1st-time permitting (14 days for subsequent permits within 180 days)
3) $150 permit application fee
4) Commercial drone insurance required to include NYC as COI
5) Must report any crash-related injuries or property damage to 911
6) If photos or video are to be captured, notification must be made to the Community District Board where such recording is anticipated to be made
7) Must post official notices within 100 feet of any permitted takeoff/landing site
8) Applicants may also need to obtain additional permits through city agencies such as the Department of Parks and Recreation or Office of Media and Entertainment
See, that’s not so bad. 😮
Have you had success in obtaining permits? I am sure via a production company it’s not a huge burden, but as an individual hobbyist I imagine it can’t be as easy.
I love how the government literally ruins almost everything it touches.
The $150 is non-refundable and not guaranteed for acceptance too, right? Leave it to NYC to figure how to charge a tax...
I found getting the permit easy enough - took a little over 4 weeks (if I remember). And I only did one NYC last year, and none this year. More cumbersome was having to reach out to the appropriate community district board for the area where you want to fly if you’re going to shoot. There are about a dozen districts. They each have a website. And you download and print posters to put up notices.
The $150 fee is perhaps prohibitive for hobbyists, and the answer to that is to restrict yourself to the hobby fields designated by the parks department. If you’re doing a job, you would probably build the fee expense into your client pricing.
I’m sure some commercial pilots just put up and down quickly with a Mini and hope to not get caught, but I don’t take chances because if they do catch you, you’ll never get a permit in the future.
The only real drag is not being able to respond to a client call to do a job tomorrow. If you’re working regularly, it’s supposed to be only a 14-day lead for subsequent permits.
I think of it as just like it used to be to get airspace waivers before we had LAANC (which was worse because waivers used to take months).
I live and work in CT so I don’t see myself getting much CIty work. In fact the one job I did was tall building views of a finished project for a construction management company based in CT. And you know, it was nerve-wracking because you’re flying in tight spaces between buildings and worried about backing into another structure. I was able to take off from an upper floor landing so I wasn’t as worried about signal loss as I might have been if I had to stand on the street. A bit of up and down draft wind currents in those canyons between buildings. The last thing I’d want is to just fall down from 20 stories into the sidewalk.
Even for a hobby pilot?
Micro too? (>250g)
Cmon folks, enough with the clickbait and fear mongering. It’s not the end of anything, especially based on what happens in NYC. They have a lot bigger problems than a drone ban.
Do you live in nyc?
What click bait Eddie had great information straight from the source of both FDNY and NYPD a 2 hour conversion is pretty remarkable talking inside shit to a civilian. That's something that catches my attention as I fly in parts around the city but would think twice now being all the detection they have in place. You might not understand the Clickbait phrase. 😂
No CLICKBAIT, just good info on drones in NYC. I thought it was very interesting because I had been wondering what others thought about it.
You could fly your drones in NYC! Period! There are some areas you can’t like airports
Actual title-related content starts at 9:38
I tried to do a Casey stunt! LOL
@@MrEddieNunez Lmaooooo 😂 😂 😂 😂
If you’re flying in/around NYC/boroughs you already know its tight quarters. I dont even bother w Flushing meadows. Im in west nassau, fly wherever, rip and dip and no problems. Ive spoken w my share of officers i go to church with and they are mixed nyc/nassau/suffolk. Nyc , theres not much we can do about, but in nassau and suffolk, they have to respond if someone complains but all they say is “just dont be wreckless…” they have more serious things to deal w than someone taking landscape shots or checking on RID
I always fly in school parking on the weekend I.m just a hobby pilot
Like everything else in the city, scooters and all. If it's required to be register, get it registered and carry the documents. Of course fallow the FAA rules
I watch to the end and I’m real upset about the ban especiallyDJI. I spent 9000 dollars on DJI drones and camera in the past year. I wanted start a RUclips doing same as your self Eddie. Now it look as I bought all the equipment for nothing or I have to leave nyc to go and fly. I’m in Staten Island and we have a designated fly area, but it’s kind of boring when you fly at that location.
I know the feeling bro - a lot of uncertainty and hopefully it gets ironed out fairly. Lets see what will happen.....
@@MrEddieNunezfrom your lips to Gods ears
I don't think it would pass
I live in a country where you can do whatever you want more or less, as long as you aren't hurting anyone else. Be sensible and don't use it to piss people off and you'll be fine 🚁👍
The bill doesn't ban DJI drones. Content creators keep saying "DJI Drone ban" as click bait. Your $9000 worth of drones will be fine. The bill is a gradual banning of sales of new DJI drones. The sales ban won't be in effect for at least 5 years as the bill is written. It does nothing for current drones as the all already have FCC radio approval. Everything you own is safe and will be safe. You probably just won't get to buy the Avata 4, Mavic Pro 6, Air 5 or Mini 7. Over the next 3-5 years they will be increasing tariffs on DJI drone imports so they will get more expensive. Your $9000 worth of drones may actually end up being worth double in a few years for resale.
Apparently recently a lululemon store was raided twice in a day. I wish NYC would ban shoplifting.
When are you going back to PR ? CASA NICE DREAM AIRBNB NEEDS YOU !
Soon hopefully!
Great footage and yes it is a shame that the honest people who are just hobbyists and real workers using drone as an honest tool have to loose their rights because of the bad and misinformed!
Agreed
can we fly a small drones (249gr) in Bkln, Bronx, like in a park areas, sport fields?
Rules are the same
Excellent video great footage !! I got my first drone last Christmas and live near one of the approved nyc parks . I did extensive research when I got it and pretty much will stick to the approved areas. I’m still learning how to control the flight path.
Which park do you visit? Flushing meadows?
@@MrEddieNunez Forest Park it’s off the beaten path , not great for scenery but excellent for practice.
Thank you for sharing your story. I now live in NYC. I'm also planning to buy a new drone which is the same model as the one you have. Do you think now is not a good time to buy a new drone?I want to do it solely for recreation, specifically landscape photography. What preparations do I need to make before buying a drone? Moreover, if I do not use drones in NYC, especially Manhattan, do I still require an NYPD permit? Thank you
You can technically still fly without a permit within the 5 designated parks in each of the boroughs. I would say as long as you fly cautiously and not within hot spots, you shouldn’t have an issue.
Eddie same here at Ca, but come on I am from n.y. always the city on top...here we fly whit papers, got to have that faa, pr. like you work home at PUERTORRO,mi pana, come to Ca.
I should 😂
this ban is b.s because Elise Stefanik is in bed with American drone companies. they are killing the hobby I am happy I had almost 10 years of freedom before this b.s I have now a mavic 3. for American company to even come close to the mavic 3 it would cost triple the price. I really hope a full ban don't happen and if it does, I am pretty sure the existing dji drones will not be affected.
Let's hope this ridiculous rule is challenged in court. Oh yeah, nice video Eddie! 🙂
Let’s see…. NYC always finds a way to get around stuff
Thank you Eddie for this info, there’s has to be something we as drone pilots can do to fight back against this. Especially if we depend on drones for income
I agree
Right?? And agree(d)! 🤚🏼
Totally agree
I haven’t see these areas in years. I grew up in New York City….125 St. & Broadway and in Passaic, NJ. I’ve been in Cali for years now. It’s always cool seeing these places and how they’ve changed. Pretty cool.
Far Rockaway has been gentrified for sure
7:03 were you flying the air with the goggles?
No, that was the avata 2.
Hey, what’s up Eddie? This has nothing to do with this video but I ordered a phone case from thin born and I still didn’t receive it. It says it didn’t ship yet. Can you help me out with my order is under Michael Blade. It’s an iPhone 15 Pro Max case thanks again Eddie.
Hey Mike! Please email me your email address and I will include you in a message to them.
I guess they realized they could be used as a kamikaze by terror rist as seen on the Ukraine war , but the little ones below 300 grams can't carry weight , or fly above 50-80 feet having the prop guards on... due to weight and wind warning
I think my drone buying days are over. I'll make do with the five I currently own.
Lol😂😂😂😂
💪
Good to see you back in the mix, 4 hours late!!! I see why it took you almost a week to post, she probably lit you up when you got back......lol
Lol, it was Father’s Day so I was in charge 😅
Don't Fly in New York... Why... Because they going to take your SHIT 😂 😂 😂
You heard it from the pastor!
@@MrEddieNunez 😂
What is the song and artist?
Song from soundstripe
As a Commercial Drone Pilot & Hobbyist, It’s sad to see how the government can easily take away a hobby just because they deem it so. Your always going to have a few bad apples in every hobby so it’s a lame excuse to ban something when years prior there were no clear or substantial instances of Drones behaving badly due to bad apples. For NYC to ban Drones and threatening, fine, confiscate, etc. just proves my point about Government overreach as well as control.
Exactly
Another reason to stay away from NYC.
It's depressing!
Yeah
I’m so tempted to get that Avada drone
It’s so good. I love it
@@MrEddieNunez i might need to get one
sorry to hear that bro hopefully it might change in the future where they might allow it again meaning drones
You have to ask yourself: "What do they want to cover up in the coming future?"
As a constituency, do not allow them to get away with it.
Wow!!! Far rock is coming up. I haven't been there in a few years. I love the vlogging style.
Far Rock has changed so much, especially after hurricane Sandy.
I’ve been living in leftist ran cities now for over a decade (Newport news, Mew Orleans, Cincinnati and Santa Barbara) and they have all the same vibe with rules/restrictions/over taxation and licensing. I’m originally from Burlington, Vt so I have the ability to see this because I grew up in one, but moved away after HS.
Cool!
54 seconds into your video, and I'm confused. Is this about drones, or is it about your ebikes?? 😅
It’s about life 😎
Great vlog Eddie! It was good to see that osprey on a nest.
As for my future with drones I have a feeling that the Air 3 is probably going to be all I need for my hobby work. I have no intention to fly in NYC anytime soon, I will stick to my territory out on the California Central Coast.
Thanks Leonard! I was so worry the male osprey would come get me! LOL.
Were you flying in Far Rockaway with a pilot’s license? I was only aware of designated flying zones in specific NYC parks for hobbyists to fly their drones. I’ve been researching this for a while. So please let me know if otherwise.
LANCC approval
Great VLOG, you got some nice shots. And let's hope there is still time to save the hobby from these politicians. Thanks for sharing Eddie.
I hope so too
who tf complies in NYC anyways😂😂
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏💪💪💪💪👌👌👌👌👍👍👍👍
🙌
There are 5 parks in NYC where you are allowed to fly. All you have to do to fly outside of those areas is get permission from the parks dept. and NYPD.
There is actually only one, Calvert Vaux Park.
That bill is so stupid... the reality is that they done one civilian with these kind of technology if pass a war.
Pero pues por ahora todo lo que podamos tener hay que agararlo y luego ya estar listo
Enjoyed the video Eddie! CR, a man of few words! 😆
Lol
Gr8 video bro ...we gotta do more ride&FLY like tht!! Gr8 relaxing father's day with no stress ...
LMAO 🤣 🤣 🤣
Yes we do! Especially with our new crew.
How is the bill putting the ban in effect. They writing as no take offs and landings in city limits or something? Cause they can’t control airspace legally. It’d be interesting to see what outcome there is of it because small towns are getting sued and losing for this type of thing now.
Correct, no landing or takeoffs
@@MrEddieNunez I’m getting tired of that loophole being used to prevent drone operations. Almost wish it would turn into a state vs federal battle but that will never happen because there’s not enough of us.
Nice flight for sure that railing at the gazebo had you as you pulled up easy. Great scenery and superb tracking with the pocket. Also on the NYPD drone radar as I too understand for security but if they can see us and where we are at, can it also give the serial number and then cross reference to the FAA and tell them that I am a certified pilot? Just wondering
Almost went from a vlog to a Avata 2 crash test video, LOL
@@MrEddieNunez hahaha
Wow!!! Great video!!! Outstanding editing and videography.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the info.... Always enjoy your videos!
Thanks for watching!
I’m curious how many illegal flights there are of tourists in NY, in Amsterdam it was 40,000 last year. Amsterdam is a NFZ in the Netherlands.
😡🤬😡🤬
As hobbyist I’m very concerned because I fly strictly for fun but I really feel bad for the folks that do this for living. Hopefully it all works out and we can continue to enjoy our hobby.
Agree
Always great information
Thanks for watching!
Good vlog Eddie
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video cool footage
Thank you very much!
Good times!!!!❤🎉
Hey Eddie! Sorry that the bad drone operators in NYC have to ruin it for everyone else. In North Carolina , no take-off/landing in state parks. In South Carolina , just follow the FAA guidelines. Cheers, Brendan
Carolina's sounds like a good place!
Glad I escaped from NY😊
LMAO! Come back bro!
