Picked this up, one of the most daunting things is being asked to put together a build like this first thing with no idea what the content in the game is even like
watching this at 2020, and probably will play it finally.. i really had no idea how this game works, kind of reminds me of the old classic fallout but this one seems more complicated and had more stuffs to do..
It really needs a QoL overhaul though. The mind-reading NPC's that share a omnipresent faction mind is clownish. The lack of SW/SE walls not becoming transparent or invisible when the camera needs to see through them is embarrassing for any indie gamedev. There's just so much amateur gamedev stuff in this game, to the point where it's plagued with a lot of really big systemic problems that could EASILY be remedied by very little work (honestly, these problems should never have even existed in the first place unless the dev was very low in skill when creating this game).
So, 6 years later many things have changed, but still are the same in some other ways. I'll go over some things I disagree with despite you saying some good things also. 1:28 Saying dumping your base points into strength is a good call for melee characters or those who want greater carry capacity, otherwise is a complete waste that food, drugs and clothing/gear boosts can overcome. Different builds are all situational and require different attribute allocation. 1:44 being a jack of all trades or doing too much is indeed a way to set yourself up for failure. 2:37 I touched on this earlier, but saying not to max out guns entirely for early game is wrong, Junkyard and some caves have enemies with firearms and Lucas the Armory Master gives you a crossbow, pistol or knife at the start right from the get go. 3:17 Hacking and Lockpicking are great choices for beginners. 3:35 Social skills although not mandatory are nice quality of life, especially mercantile, helping with money throughout the game. 4:07 Potentially useful early game if you know what your doing, powerful mid-late game. 4:48 Not sure why you put crossbows on a melee build, could work but not recommended for beginners. The dodge/Evasion on a melee build on its own is fine. 7:02 This whole Doctor Feat from you was explained very poorly, any player can heal themselves with or without the doctor feat, BUT a nice quality of life is that the below 40% bandage restriction is removed which can be a lifesaver if your out of health hypos out in the field. 11:15 Guess the "Don't be a jack of all trades" thing went out the window, if anyone reads any of this, at least focus on 2-3 damage types, with 2 being the sweet spot, using 3 psi schools, a melee and ranged build a long with sneak is absolutely terrible. If you ignore everything else that was said by me and this video that was made, DON'T do this. Not much else to say, I'm not sure if this was the meta but I started back in early 2019 and I rarely made my builds like this (although messed up in other areas like bad playstyle). Everyone makes mistakes, its okay to do that, that's how you learn and grow, good luck everyone!
Don't put points into evasion or dodge if you are playing as a super squishy character. Even if you are a melee sledge hammer build that can tank lots of damage, the armor penalty reduce you dodging and evasion chance so they are not that useful. Only invest into Guns or melee. Crossbows are not really useful except maybe for stealth kills but they for niche situation because enemies tend to clog together. Invest into throwing for grenades they are far better. In truth I find this video is a really bad guide for new players. He mention not being a jack of all trades but still spread out his skills points into totally useless skills. This guy put his points into the other three psi trees with damaging skills that cost a shit load of ACTION POINTS. Already Guns cost plenty of action points it is redundant to invest skills points into psi for damage. If you want to use a psi skill for support like investing in the psi tree like psychokenisis for forcefield which allow you to block enemies should they outnumber you and retreat into a better position and wait for your skills cooldown. Psi skills like pyrokenesis cost lots of actions points and even if you are a pure psi user, I found them rarely useful. If you want to use psi skill for support I suggest going for Temporal manipulation for psycho-temporal contraction. This skill allow you to increase you action points by 15 and movement points by 30 which is extremely helpful. tho it cost you 55 skill points into the temporal tree, it is still worth it.
CRPG could be more enjoyable if they ditch the whole ¨hey, you don't know shit about the mechanics, build your useless character and waste your time until you finally know half of where you fucked up the build, now do it again until you know the mechanics and memorize the first hours of the game¨
I think I agree With both sides of the argument, the entire game should be at the very least playable with no previous knowledge, but previous knowledge should be required when making a god build
Old asf but it wouldnt be a CRPG without that. They are mostly based of D&D which you wouldnt play without prior knowledge, reading or a person to teach you.
@@jade4781 D&D is braindead easy tho, the only thing to fuck up a character on D&D is to not have common sense (lets create a fighter with high wisdom and charisma as their highest stats)
This is a useability issue, and sadly many indie games do not understand basic QoL design. In a game like Underrail, a respec feature is mandatory. If you don't want to use it, you don't have to, but for everyone else (the VAST majority) the choice is between running a gimped character or quiting the game forever, because restarting after 20+ hours in isn't an option - you just play another video game instead.
@Luka dominique Like classes aren't a thing in rpg's lol. Sorry that I don't have the required level of autism to study a game like it's a fucking job.
Actually range is quite good early, you only need 7 str for sniper rifle if you do range build, also early melee is good to conserve your limited early bullet, after get some weapon like zephyr you dont really need that melee anymore except you want hybrid
Sniper rifles all need 5 str, except for one unique rifle in the late game (which is not particularly good compared to late game crafted snipes) requiring 6 str.
Hehe. "Mell-ee". But seriously, I never really have a problem with mispronounced words. Just means you've only ever encountered it in print, for the most part.
True, "melee" seems to be pronounced very differently depending on the region. To make a very quick example: i have 2 guys in my WoW classic guild that were in the army (therefore definitely used the word "melee" and similar before) , 1 of them being from the East area of the US and the other being from the central/south. The first one pronounces it as "meh lay" , the second one pronounces it more like "me-lì".
Indie game made be a barely competent developer, so I wouldn't be surprised if the lack of basic features was a permanent problem. The sad thing is, this is all inexcusable. Indie developers are just lazy. It's an almost effortless thing to implement basic QoL features, but indie devs are very often grossly incompetent at even rudimentary gamedev skills or they're lazy and already made all their money in early access. It's sad.
What I don't get about these games are that there is always a 'perfect build' don't use guns in the beginning .. use Melee .. and every build on youtube says the same things. So how is this an actual RPG if everyone uses the same build just to beat the game? Seems kinda pointless.
there arent "perfect builds". when i tried to play the game on someone else's build i realise that it wasnt optimised for the way i wanted to play it. The fun comes from creating a unique character while utilising knowlege of the system to create something effective. Its a balance of optimisation and creativity.
You don't have to ever use melee, but to expect a game this ugly and this lacking in basic QoL features, made be such an amateur barely-gamedev, is a bit much in our sad state of a society/market. Even if these indie devs become millionaires, there's a 99% they never spend a single penny to improve their game to be what it should be. Most people don't actually care about their own craft. Don't expect balance from amateur indie devs. Don't expect QoL. Don't even expect the most rudimentary basic functionality that should be required in all video games. In fact, don't expect anything but garbage and just be happy when it's better than AAA monetized crap that's even worse. Yea. It's awful. Our industry is honestly horrible. There are no standards. Most indies are garbage, even when they accidentally fall into success. But we're so desperate for a game that isn't total dogshit (AAA ruined by capitalists monetizing everything to the extreme) that we'll just take whatever we can find. Scraps of what could be a good game, but is instead a bad game, but in a world of horrible games that can barely be called games, the bad is actually good. The bar is just THAT low.
