I did 30 years in that Dept. The snow melters don’t get much use unless there is substantial snow. The funniest unseen thing in this operation is ,it breaks down so often because of multiple street signs and fire hydrants the pay-loader scoops up. When the snow is melted the bottom of the melter looks like a Dept of transportation storage area . Unavoidable when the snow is so deep . Btw. Private contractors are paid in excess of $250 to $400 an hour. They work 24/7. Do the math. God bless America
Thanks for the time you took in the cold to show everyone that not even a blizzard can shut NYC Down! Outstanding Video much thanks, stay safe out there!
Once again, Sanitation comes through battling the storm to keep the city moving. Considering the vast mileage of streets that make up the five boroughs, Sanitation does its best it can to clear the snow. Yes, there has been hiccups, here and there, but overall they do a fine job, in addition to their regular tasks of garbage collection. There is a fine book that is in my New York City library at home, entitled "Picking Up" by Robin Nagle, which does a fine job of telling the history of the Sanitation Department and the tasks that workers do day to day, that make up DSNY. Thanks to the workers of DSNY!!
+syber wolf well if you are thinking that the snow plows and what not are fire related, they are not. they are city vehicles. and John, i think that the so they cant see them part was a joke.
This was really cool to watch. As a non NYC resident I'm always fascinated by the fact that the garbage trucks have plows. Do they ever plow & collect trash at the same time?
Do they use the skid steers on that truck for snow removal as well? I can see those being more handy in NYC in those hard to reach places over the loader
Man it looks like u guy were getting about an inch per hour.....I have never seen a dumpster being used as a snowplow before, that's pretty cool! "Where da plow at? There da plow at"
It depends on were in the country, temperature. In Iowa the DOT puts down a brine solution before the storms to help prevent ice buildup then if it gets too cold they sand the roads and attempt the mechanically remove snow and ice from the road.
JJ You worried me, I had to look outside to see if it snowed. Great coverage of snow removal. I'm curious to know the business end of how the melter Contraption works. Thank you too, Sayonara my Friend. { :- )
WELL, THE SALT SPREADERS HAVE THEIR OWN UNITS SO THEY TREAT THE ROADS. AS FOR THE GARBAGE TRUCK THEY COME BACK SEVERAL DAYS LATER AND COLLECT THE TRASH.....
@@ethanslife4206 -they been doing it for at least 50 years. Only way I could see nyc not doing it is if they couldn’t get parts. And as big as New York sanitation dept/ trash truck contract is I bet before they look for new trucks they make sure they can get a plow for it
@@ethanslife4206 The plows are detachable. Once the majority of snow clearing ops is finished, the plows are taken off and those trucks go back to trash collection duty. Salt spreader trucks also have the same arrangement.

+BrickDale Fire Dept. COOL AND THANK YOU! ;o)
+THEMAJESTIRIUM1 why do fire departments use unmarked Vehicles sometimes what exactly is the purpose so the fire can't see them coming?
+syber wolf WHAT?
+syber wolf well if you are thinking that the snow plows and what not are fire related, they are not. they are city vehicles. and John, i think that the so they cant see them part was a joke.
+syber wolf also, sometimes if they do t have enough rigs, they use civilian vehicles to get from place to place
another great video bud...always enjoy seeing whats going on in the big city coming from a small city in Michigan of less than 1500 people
+John Hohfeldt COOL! COME VISIT JOHN AND THANKS SO MUCH MY FRIEND! ;o)
Nice of that guy to wave at you and it was good to see that older loader at work
IT IS NICE TO SEE AND NICE OF HIM TO WAVE JACOB! THANKS SO MUCH.....

YUP.....
@@THEMAJESTIRIUM1 he timed it just right
I love how they use the garbage trucks
YUP.....
Do they use the skid steers on that truck for snow removal as well? I can see those being more handy in NYC in those hard to reach places over the loader
YES, I BELIEVE THEY DO AROUND TOWN JACOB! THANKS SO MUCH.....
Who picks up the garbage when the garbage trucks are out plowing?
THEY PICK IT UP AFTER! THANKS SO MUCH......
Here's to unsung heroes.
I AGREE! THANKS SO MUCH.....
Wow...that was a great video! I like the snow melter thing- dingy. Never seen one of those before. Made for some interesting viewing. Thanks!
+Susan Ishida IT IS A NICE MACHINE! THANKS SO MUCH MY FRIEND! ;o)
I work for the company that manufactures those Refuse Trucks! Pretty Cool to see them in Action!
COOL STUFF INDEED! THANKS SO MUCH.....
Even the garbage trucks have plows mounted? All hands on deck for a couple inches of snow it seems
IT WAS 27 INCHES!
That's what i said, a couple inches
In NYC they do this since the 60s. It's not an exceptional thing. That's just how they plow their streets.
is this upper manhattan?
ALL AROUND TOWN.....
Nice great work
THANKS SO MUCH! ;o)

Nice Video Greets from Cologne Germany
+Markus 1971 THANKS SO MUCH MY FRIEND! GREETINGS FROM NEW YORK CITY! ;o)
Not bad for a change. Thanks
YUP! THANKS SO MUCH.....
Great coverage John but would be happier watching from your window!!!! It's cold out there - take care buddy!!!!
HAHA! YES IT WOULD BE! THANKS SO MUCH MURRAY.....
Does america use salt or gravel on the roads?
MOSTLY SALT.....
It depends on were in the country, temperature. In Iowa the DOT puts down a brine solution before the storms to help prevent ice buildup then if it gets too cold they sand the roads and attempt the mechanically remove snow and ice from the road.
@@peacekeepercris In recent years NYC also began spreading salt on the streets in advance of a snowstorm fpr pretty much the same reason.
What camera did you use? I love it :)
IPHONE.....
Great seeing something other than fires. How much does it cost to live in NY?
THANKS AND A LOT OF MONEY.......
Too much
Those guys do a great job
YUP.....THANKS SO MUCH.....
great work

+vetterfellow HAHA! I HAVE A LOT OF FOOTAGE ON MANY TOPICS THAT I WILL BE POSTING! THANKS! ;o)
So if trash trucks are plowing snow who picks up trash and spreads salt I saw one truck with salt don’t seem like a lot for big city.
WELL, THE SALT SPREADERS HAVE THEIR OWN UNITS SO THEY TREAT THE ROADS. AS FOR THE GARBAGE TRUCK THEY COME BACK SEVERAL DAYS LATER AND COLLECT THE TRASH.....
Why don't they have a snow machine that melts the snow at curbs with flames? The water then goes into the sewer.
IDK.
cost. that's alot of heat.
Because for it to snow it would have to be below freezing which would make water on the street ice, making complete chaos.
They're developing lasers so they don't have to use flames.
Thats funny as hell, i work for the private contractor
COOL AND THANKS SO MUCH! ;o)
I wish it would snow like that in Alabama..
AWWWWW! MAYBE SOME DAY IT WILL MARK WITH ALL THE CHANGING WEATHER PATTERNS AND ALL.....
Why not dump all the snow in the east river?
THEY DO THAT TOO! THANKS SO MUCH.....
why do they use garbage trucks for snow plows?
BECAUSE IT WORKS WELL
NYC has used trash trucks for plows for at least 50 years
why not? the garbage trucks are already there, why buy more equipment when the lot can do the same job.
COOL
THANKS SO MUCH.....
Two in one. Snow plow and trash truck.
YUP.....
Why not just spray the hot water right on the snow or take some of that hot ass steam they got and spray that on the snow.
WELL, THAT IS A GOOD IDEA BUT WHERE CAN THEY GET THE HOT WATER. HAHA! THANKS SO MUCH.....
@@THEMAJESTIRIUM1 they can get it from the same source that they are using for the machine, HAHA!
that os coolTHEMAJESTIRIUM1
THANKS SO MUCH! ;o)
should just have the trucks dump it into the river to be honest.
PERHAPS....
Snow chains are overrated.
OK.
Garbage trucks as snowplows?? 😕
YUP!
That's kinda wierd
