Excellent looking box set Lloyd, and Muswellbrook Hillbillies is a great album, you will enjoy it because you said you love their other albums from 68-73.

Great boxset Lloyd. As you say Arthur is also my number 1 (thanks for mention). Muswell Hillbillies is very different for the Kinks, but it is a really strong album. Its genre is kinda Americana/ music hall / great bit of brass. Excellent unboxing Lloyd! Mike

After seeing your great unboxing video of Kinks Muswell Hillbillies/Everybodys in Showbiz boxset Im just so curious Lloyd what you think of the Muswell Hillbillies album.
I hope you had the time to listen to it ?
For me who got all Kinks albums both on vinyl and cd’sand have listened to them once a year in chronological order the last 44 years. I have to say that MH is together with The Village Green Preservation Society and Arthur albums my top 3 Kinks albums. They are all very different but all are rock masterpieces.
I think that on Muswell Rays lyrics might be his very best and the songs sounds more American in style than his otherwise very english songs.
On the album Dave Davies sounds and plays like if he was Ry Cooder. I can also tell you that the gatefold sleeve on the album is the same as my original from 1971. Im sure you are going to enjoy this wonderful boxset many years from now.
Hi Kurt, thanks for watching mate, appreciate the support!, on MH, ive listened to it probably eight times now in the last week, i like it but im finding it a difficult listen in places. so far i think i would call it an 'americana' album with some music hall and rock thrown in the mix. i also found "arthur" a difficult album to listen to initially but its my favourite album of theirs now so i expect MH to get better over the next few weeks..

Thanks for your reply mate! Well you are from sunny Australia and Im from the frozen north in Sweden. Why did I point that out, well from here we often visit England and London. Thats why I really fell in love with Kinks, when in my late 20s started to visit english pubs and heard the music on jukeboxes all over town. When the Stones just wanted to sound so close to their american favourites as possible, Ray Davies loved all the english traditions and found that he wasnt interested to pretend he was born in the deep south of the USA. I bought the off single by Kinks in the sixties but didn’t listen to their albums. I listened at the time to english folkrock like Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span but most of all to progrock like Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, King Crimson and Gentle Giant to mention a few. So it wasnt to around late 70’s I discovered and fell in love with The Kinks wonderful work from Face to Face in 1966 up to Muswell Hillbillies in 1971. From then I bought everything they recorded.
When it comes to Muswell Hillbillies I think its good to know that in the pub on the cover, The Archway Tavern in north London which the band went for a pint, they were known for having live music and mostly country music bands. Thats why Ray created an american feel to the music on the album. But his lyrics is very very english indeed. Listen to songs like Alcohol, Skin and Bone and Have a Cup of Tea, Oklahoma USA and Uncle Son. Absolutely brilliant to say the least!
On the Everybodys in Showbiz album there are in my humble opinion two songs that sticks out and that is Sitting In My Hotel. Can you imagine Mick Jagger to write a lyric like that and the other is of course Celluloid Heroes. What an amazing song that is. But as a whole album I think Muswell Hillbillies is a stronger album. I think you know, but the Davies brothers were from Muswell Hill north London. I hope that the albums will grow on you over time! Keep up your good work mate❣️🎼🎸🎹🍺
great reply mate, i was 9 when i left the UK for Australia with my parents and sister, i grew up about 30 miles north of London and my Dad comes from Tottenham so i knew London very well as a child so i relate to bands like Kinks and Paul Weller through those early experiences. i agree with your comments re: Rolling Stones and Jagger also. not a huge fan of Prog but i am a Jethro Tull fan, Pink Floyd are okay but i love David Gilmour's four solo albums, "the division bell" is also my favourite PF album.
