  • This is the tedious part! The chord progression that mark plays to set the mood! I'm rusty as I haven't played much recently as you guys know, I haven't had a guitar in over 6 months! Hope some of you get it down!

I always thought lead solo's like "Stairway to heaven" were what made me go "Wow" until i heard this solo. When i heard this solo for the first time (Live Knopfler one) I was nearly in tears. It moved something inside me.

Not boring. The landing of the right note on the chord progression changes are important and also building the vibe. Thanks for your time and effort with this classic.

Thank you so much. A not too technical and very informative tutorial, teaching a reasonably accurate playing of this great theme. You are doing it for the pleasure and benefit of teaching others rather than to feather your ego as other appear to do. Thanks.

  • @edwins5745

I just learned it entirely. It took several tries, learned it in parts. The repetition after each section helped a lot. There are various parts where you have to be careful not to omit pull offs or vibrato or pause or slides (such as where to begin) as you noted. I learned part 2 before coming to the pre-solo part which is great to know. It gives the solo a completeness that is missing if you go direct to solo. Thank you for this great lesson. My first Knopfler song, which I can play in some Newcastle pub if I ever get to that part of England. GO Magpies!!!

Thank you so much for taking the time to work out this whole song, like you I have a tendency to master the good bits and forget about the rest. Now I'm racking up your views just trying to learn the intro and just when I think I've got it I realise the notes I'm remembering in my head aren't the ones Mark played. Great that you stop to listen to his phrases, I find it hard to remember it all in a oner. Much appreciated!!....Michael..

Seen you a while back on here with a Tunnel of Love lesson. I really like your style of teaching. I've always wanted to learn the beginning of this song, tried it on my own with no luck. It's a lot easier than I thought it would be. Still working on it, but doing pretty good so far. I couldn't have done it without your help. How in the world do you figure out all these licks and chords? So thankful to you. Fantastic playing. Thank you!

Thanks mate, appreciate it, just keep practicing, the only way I learn them is by constantly repeating each lick and chord over and over again, takes a long time but I hate not being able to play them! So I just repeat and repeat each part over and over..!

Jake......that is a good effort and well done but.....towards the end of your tutorial in Lesson 1 you have missed a couple of chords that help contribute to this lovely piece......so instead of just playing Bm.....they would be as follows [string numbers from thin to thick.....1 to 6]:
    x 3 4 4 x 4 [Bm6/G#] to x 3 4 2 x 3 [G6] to 2 3 4 4 2 2 [Bm/F#] to 2 3 4 4 2 x [Bm].....technically the sound is partly Bm but the bass notes moves down chromatically from G# to G to F#.....look at the video and you can see that he hands are formed no more than a simple Bm chord
