These items were once very common indeed. They turn up in graves from the iron age to the late medieval period, and were worn both men and women. It is a simple design with a simple mechanism. There were also sometimes used as weapons, which should please the blood-thirsty.

Penannular brooches
/ user "Lindybeige"
Always affix those brooches facing away from your carotid artery.
JulianZeezer There was actually a law in Ireland about not having the pin facing out from you.
Lindybeige I made one once, it was 76mm in diameter. I'm going for a 18th century Scottish Highlander. On average, what were the diameters of that era?
Lindybeige Why is that? Was it to prevent accidental poking?
TheScandinavianOne ...while hugging your mother in law. :P
If the needle isn't extremely long, you'd be more at danger when that is pivoting about (presumably you're trying to fasten it blind, and the pin could flop around; fastening it pin-away from the neck would add the distance of the ring to the length of needle currently pointing towards your neck) than when it's fastened correctly. Though that's more for annulars and pseudo-penannulars than regular penannulars.
The cloak is penbeige in color.
I must applaud you for that Penunbelievably spot on reasoning.
+Void Whisperer perhaps "greige"?
HAHAHAHAHA
Pending - someone approaching your door.
Iron Pirate Three beige points!
Iron Pirate :-D
Iron Pirate I guess that makes "impending" = someone at your door.
Iron Pirate Penda - last pagan king of Mercia
I thought pending meant almost dinged.
Cloaks and the like are just so top notch, how on earth did they fall out of style?
andrewkgsmith They are still used as a decoration, sometimes.
andrewkgsmith Pshaw! It's winter in the colonies and I'm snuggly warm in mine (currently mixing it up draping it asian monk style)
andrewkgsmith Well, I guess people thought overcoats were more practical?
andrewkgsmith As someone who lives in Phoenix, I simply will not shut up about how much I wish light flowing robes could be in style for living in an American desert.
+cnawan After so much talk of how excelent they are, I may just make one for next winter... It will be fun, getting all the odd looks. "Is he wearing a cloak?..." "Yes. Yes, I am."
No, Scrath Folchester, Arthur was Welsh, and so he was the head of the dragon. Arthur Pendragon can mean the rather impressive Bear-king Dragonhead.
Lindybeige I should have made that my user name. Its far more interesting than my current one.
Lindybeige Also, what kind of brooch is the Tara Brooch?
Lindybeige This Penannular brooches are brilliant!
+Lindybeige Who do you have a 'no rummaging' rule? Just curious ^^
+Lindybeige I was shocked to find that many French people honestly belive that King Arthur was... french.
Excellent video thank you.
Destin, nice to see you here. I heard you too are a Flaggy Flag warrior and I just wanted to let you know how much that means to us. Keep being awesome! =D
I swear, I have found three different "big" youtubers watching these videos.
Sky Flier
1. this guy
2. Cody
3. ???
Stuart Morrow 3: Shadiversity
Someone heard the word engineering :)
So the annular broach is basically a belt buckle applied to non-belt things.
Roll the dice: you fumble to the ground,
roll again: the brooche's needle pokes into your eye.
Did Medieval punks wear them in their noses?
For affixing clothy objects. Also, the almost symbol for "Quake."
Penquakesymbolic
I never thought I would find a broach/safety pin so interesting :P Nice video as usual!
Seems like a cheap and simple solution.
Wonder why we don't still see these around.
Rynosaur94 Because better methods were invented. Like buttons. And zippers.
Rynosaur94 Bring back the cloaks!
Pengu1nM4ster Agreed! Woolen cloak is *extremely* cosy :-)
+Rynosaur94 it's because people were getting pennanulated in the throat too often, which wasn't a problem back in the day, but as the american justice system came about, whoever made those got sued to oblivion.
+Rynosaur94 To be fair, it _is_ somewhat more metal than a safety pen. And less safe.
Why do you have a no-rummaging rule? Isn't that a bit too specific of a verb?
thecookieeater Strictly no rummaging
I feel like I want to get a cloak like that and use it.
From where I'm standing, that cloak be baby barf green, señor beige.
I support increased use of the prefix "pen" as in "Age of Ultron was penawesome."
I am so excited by the revelation about what the "pen-" prefix means...! D8
You have a great presentation style for youtube! Thanks for showing me how to put on my own penannular broach/safety pin! 😊
i've seen penannular brooches for decades in museums and books and this is the first time I've ever seen one used. Effective as hell.
I picked up one of these at a medieval festival last year made of blackened iron and twisted at both ends. Works a treat and goes great with my black crow cloak.
Penarmed to the teeth?
Is that only being armed to the chin?
Or he is just biting his fist and hasn't stuck his whole arm down his throat.
Thanx Lloyd, I learned something today.
perhaps a reason for having two sturdy annular brooches was to (ideally at least) make it more difficult to remove or lose a dress or have an embarrassing reveal in front of all your mates. I can imagine something like that quickly evolving into a symbol of modesty or decency or other fashion symbolisms
Excellent theory. That may as very well be.
Bob on, Kenneth. Respect.
I was wondering how to fit my penanular; surprisingly straight forward! Thanks!
I'm a 3d artist for video games. I made an in-game outfit recently that included almost exactly what you wore in the video, but I didn't know the name of what this style of clothing was. Wish I had seen this beforehand but in any case thank you yet again for the information Loyd!
I saw a Penannular today in sweden and talked with my partner about your video on Penannulars. Tried a hat on and some guy came and stood in the way of my mirror and talked about Penannulars I suppose. Had to ask him: Are you Lindy Beige? Hot danm it was you. I was too weired out by my accidental Lindy Beige summoning to stay and talk more with you. I guess it's not entirely random you are at a meadival market, but in combination that I just takes about you and you being all over to this swedish town freaked me out. I did came back for the hat tho.
Ah, so that's how those work. Funny how the best solution to practical problems is often, itself, practical.
Thank you, Mr. Lloyd!
Oddly enough, I'm not angry that I watched this video. These things I did not know. Thank you.
Nice you made this video, i just found it through your videos, it´s always been a piece i saw in costumes in medieval set series/movies, and i always have been curious about it, now i know it´s name !
When I glanced passed this video in the list, I read the title as, "Peanut Binoculars".
I really love your videos. Sure is one on my list of Patreons once I get a decent job ;)
Marcelo Henrique Thanks for warning me, I hadn't realised he'd set up a Patreon account.
Now Lloyd, i thought I told you strictly no rummaging!
You probabaly won't read this lloyd but I just want you to know, I absolutely love your content.
Informative and still very fun. I'd love to see you informing us on a whole lot more in the future. You help with not only my fantasy Role playing but also with my writing.
The things you never knew you wanted to know about seem to be endless.
So when an 21st century man, used his Penannular brooche like a annular brooche and learns that there is an much easier method, how stupid should he feel?
These things are something I've been wondering about for a very long time.
Viking cloak fastener pin! It's a viking brooch cloak fastener thingamabob. Penann... Peninansulat... Viking cloak pin.
Finally a video that shows how it works. Thank you, mr. Lindybeige, sir.
Oh, and that colour. I know. It's sort of off brown, not white. Should be a name for it, really. Such a pleasing, warm, soil like colour. Oh, well.
I've learned something new. Thank you :-)
When you opened it up I was starstruck... I'm a great engineering student...
Thorough explanation❗️🙂
Just made several such. I'm Planning to use them at outdoor fall/winter/early spring dulcimer performances; if nothing else, they can hold my poncho/surapi closed on windy days.
Hey can you make a video on different kinds of medieval cloak?
Id love to see how you folded this cloak and such
Ah memories, I've made one of those in a reanactment vilage I used to visit when I was a kid.
I'd like to see you do more movie breakdowns. I loved the Helen of Troy and Ironclad videos
I love the Endcard on this... :D
i want this to be in style
that cloak
wonder if shakespeare had an iambic penannular
Peniambic poems - a collection of unfinished works of Shakespeare.
Looks like a grenade ring until you look closer.
Seems simple enough. I might make one later. Attaching the pin would be the hardest part.
Thanks that was both entertaining and informative... I'm curious about this "No rummaging rule" as well, any further story there?
looks great!
Sturdier than a safety pin I think.
I love how Lindy says "pattern" it sound like General Patton.
That’s a cool safety pin
Got my thinking a bit of emytholgy there...
Penannular-> shortened to "pen"-> shifted to "pin" for the pin in the middle-> shifted back to "pen" as in "pin shaped writing device"
subbed for marbles in balloons and now im learning things
perfect for poking out your own eyes when stumbling.
Loyd made me love beige.
I vote we define the color of that cloak as Lindybeige. All things of that color shall forever be described as "Lindybeige."
Penadequate is my new favorite penproper word.
I might make something like this, but with a nalbining needle. It would be very nice to have a decorative broach on my cloak that I can take off and start crafting with
Surely the finest RUclips video - nay, neé, neigh! ANY video - regarding ‘Les bróac panananulé’. You Sir, are clearly destined for greater things. Eyes, people, EYES! have you dammit👀👁👀👁??
Ah Lindy, I believe I speak for the herd when I say: let us drink ale and chew the fat together.
The cut of your jib, intrigues me.
So penetrate would mean... Something else. Thanks for the video, and thanks for mentioning Visby again :-)
The pin sticking out like that really scares me xD
So that thing in my family crest is an annular brooch. Cool.
I used to have a really twiddly annular brooch with lovely knotwork on it... Pain in the rear to get it on and off of things, but very pretty. I lost it (and the cloak it was fastened to) a while back :(
(And I left my torc in a charity shop changing room... I shouldn't be entrusted with nice things)
I've been using this style of brooch for 30 years of SCA re-enactment and I've never heard them called "penannular", before.
You're a good guy.
I like the Darren brown ad
Would the Annular brooch be comparable to a belt buckle in the way it works, only with a pin for fabric rather than a bar for punched leather?
I long considered getting a penannular for my cloak, but didn't like the way it punctures a big hole in the cloth. Eventually I invented a type of clasp that I could sew to the inside less conspicuously.
"Paene", Latin adverb, meaning "almost, nearly"
the word Pen as in the tool for writing with comes from the last name of the guy that invented it: Slavoljub Eduard Penkala...
he was a Croatian inventor who invented quite a few things...
wiki link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavoljub_Eduard_Penkala
"He pensurvived the attack."
What is the music at the end of your videos? It is really good.
Now I know.. and knowing is half the battle.
Cool, Time to go fire up the forge I think I got today's project all set.
Toothygrin Yep, and a really simple one too- all you need is a couple of large nails and you're all set. :)
I used some 1/4 round stock scrap I had kicking around but I think making one out of a square nail might look nice.
Toothygrin Old garage door springs are what I forge mine from. If you do it with a file, shape it so its more like a "D" than an "O", and quench the strait part of the "D", you can make a penannular brooch (I call em cloak pins) that doubles as a flint and steel striker, as well as an awl, so essentially a 3 in 1 tool!
Well i think now i will get cloack for some weekend's use, just to impress others a bit, and be safe from the rain and cold. I think it looks cool if colour is right ;)
peninsula, almost an island
Where can you get pure wool fabric? I am trying to make authenti-cloaks and dresses, but can’t find not synthetic blend wool fabric.
Do you have a pattern for capes
What about ringed pin ? You find a lot of those in the viking world, originating from Ireland, I have never seen those worn, only a drawing of how it was worn, and it's quite strange.
Are you ever going to do a video on knights in full plate armor?
Oh gosh I love those. I have 2
Looks to me like an annular broach works a lot like a belt buckle.
That cloak is certainly penashe.
Damn it now I have to get one
Finally someone explained how they work! 😁😁😁😁
I still use them wile going out because i carry my wool blanket lol
peninsula=pen insula=almost insulated=almost island
Hey, got a question for you. You know any good books on about like, the day to day stuff of people from histories life? Those are, in my opinion, the most interesting topics. All the books seam to be about battles and rich people being crazy.
boys getting into the cloaks again.! :)
Strictly!
No Maundering!
Looks like you're almost Hand to the King or something.
I'd say that color would be a shade of beige. Maybe of the lindier variety :^)
The color is greige; a fine color indeed
an example of a modern-day annular brooch would be a belt buckle I'd suppose?
Wonder if in a pinch they were used as a weapon, like a key inbetween your knuckles.
Whatever4690 Yes, we have tales of this.
Lindybeige can you do a video on this :) that sounds like a fun topic
Wtf, thought i hade commented this and forgot about it o.o :D
I got one of these in Ireland some years ago, looked everywhere for a real one since like %99 of them had a modern pin on the back and the old pin part was fixed. Mine has dragons on the circle part, worth every penny of the 25 euros.
