You would have to change the gears on your PTO to get it to turn faster changing the shaft only changes the number of splines not the speed it rotates.
OK....I can see changing the PTO shaft for the purposes of matching the number of splines....but does that alone change the PTO rpm from 540 to 1000 ?? I can't see where the number of splines makes a difference....one rotation of the shaft is one rotation of the shaft, isn't it ?? To get the shaft to spin faster, seems to me you'd have to change the gearing internally, not just a shaft with more splines. What am I missing ?
I thought the same. But have a look around the 47 second mark. Different gear position on the tractor end of the shaft, must engage a different gear inside the back end of the tractor

Running at 1000 rpm isn't any easier on the tractor, the load is the same. 1000 rpm splines handle more power than 540 (more surface area in contact on the splined shaft).
RJ 1999 It will reduce the torque by nearly half (for a given power output) thus reducing loads on the shaft ing, gear teeth, bearings, etc. I have wanted a 1000rpm output to reduce the number or size of belts on some equipment I designed.
So with the 1000 RPM pto, the tractor will run at lower revs to get the same PTO speed as if it had the 540 in? Think of biking up a hill in a really high gear
Mike D No it has nothing to do with the engine speed. Some implements were made to run at 540 PTO speed, usually under 100 hp, and some implements were made to run at 1000 rpm, usually over 100 horse. The tractor engine RPM remains the same . That's why he's changing the PTO shaft each one is geared different,
Thanks for the video, answered all my questions
Spot on, just what I needed wasn't sure whether I was missing something but guess I just have to pull harder!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Its what i needed to know.
I have the same pto set up on my 7740 new Holland. New Holland says the tractor will go to 1000 but I can’t get the 540 shaft out. Any suggestions?

I didn’t understand your reply. If you make a video in English and I reply in English why wouldn’t you respond in English?

Ed Smith the gearing is internal, the spline drives in a different set of gears when you switch the shaft
I thought with the ford you increase the revs for the 1000 shaft?

Well spotted, thanks.
