  • The Concerto in D Minor for two violins and violoncello, performed on original instruments by the award winning Early Music ensemble Voices of Music. Carla Moore, Rachell Ellen Wong and William Skeen, soloists. 4K ultra high definition video from the "Harmonic Labyrinth" concert, December, 2019. Voices of Music directed by Hanneke van Proosdij & David Tayler.
This concerto, from Opus 3, was studied by Johann Sebastian Bach.
A fleet stretto for the two solo violins opens the work, followed by a pointed Adagio which flows into an extended, angular fugue with extensive development, fragmentation and inversion of the subject and the stepwise countersubject. The fugue is followed by poignant slow movement for solo violin accompanied by the high strings, and brilliant, coda-like allegro closes out the concerto. The concerto highlights Vivaldi's mastery of complex counterpoint.
The third violin: in the opening stretto, the pedal point is shared by the two soloists in alternation, creating the illusion of a third player.
    I. Allegro 0:00
    II. Adagio e spiccato 0:43
    III. Allegro 1:09
    IV. Largo e spiccato 3:51
    V. Allegro 6:09
    Credits 9:03
    High Definition Audio: Boby Borisov
Final audio and video master: David Tayler

Anyone who thought that Vivaldi didn't understand (and couldn't write) counterpoint will find this illuminating. Easy to see why Bach was so interested in this great and endlessly fascinating Italian master. Also, despite the incredibly high standard of Voices of Music and their distinguished service to higher international understanding of music, this video presentation is at the very top: exemplary in performance, presentation and recording. Thanks, as always, to Hanneke, David and all of their wonderful colleagues. PW

I agree. I had a debate once with our conductor that Bach is a fan of Vivaldi and his famous counterpoint technique was, as well, much inspired from Vivaldi's works. He didn't agree until I showed all Bach's transcribed Vivaldi compositions and this very piece where counterpoint is very prominent.

@@grm7237 It your conductor didn't know that then she should find another profession. The thing about Vivaldi's music is that it does leave room for interpretation and improvisation because of his beauty in simplicity.

Agreed about vivaldi. All musicians were trained in counterpoint then. I would say vivaldi knew how to do it (there are some great fugues in his choral works), but chose not to generally. He wasn't particularly interested in it. Composers later than him also followed him in this and were more interested in single molelodies with accompaniment.

The performance is the best i ever seen, you are Masters of music, not only Voices...
The concerto is one of the best pieces of music ever heard, but we know it, Vivaldi, pure genius, makes life worthy living...
Carry on your magnificent work, thank you!!

I often feel that Vivaldi's musical genius reaches its zenith in the slow middle movements of his concertos for strings. The melodies contained therein are often exquisitely beautiful, with an unearthly and indeed spiritual quality, to an extent not seen in other baroque composers. The quality of performance of the Voices of Music ensembles does justice to what I believe was Vivaldi's original intention in writing this music. This concerto is an excellent example of what I am talking about.

I was listening to a radio program today that had on a nice piece I thought might be Vivaldi, but it wasn't, Telemann oh well. I see this on my suggested list and clickety click, here I am to now write this appreciation of an otherwise unknown work of Vivaldi's (to me if no one else). Lovely short little movements and such a bright and sprightly piece. Just what this day needed. Thank you.
    EDIT:
Very very nice on a 3rd listen. Adding this to my fave list. The ladies certainly were fast and furious at times but in keeping with the piece. I wish I had been at this concert.

Being Brazilian is always a thrill to listen to a piece so full of contrast and movement. I mean, for reasons related to Brazilian Cultural History, baroque, not just as style, but mainly as a mentality, is an important part that constitutes our ethos. So, taking contact to music that belongs, somehow, to one of the sources (the others are from African and Native/Indigenous origins) that forms our cultural and spiritual substrate gives us some clues about who we are. It's like looking to an old photograph of a relative of yore: you know that you're not like that anymore, but you also know were you came from.
Your job is amazing. I love that you play original instuments that sounds just like they were meant to sound and that you keep the original musical arrangement that brings History back to life.
    Congratulations from Brazil. ✌

That clenches it. I now have a new favourite orchestra. Hands down Voices of music is the one! All of you know how to make the instruments and music speak, and speak passionately. It's not just sawing away at the ol' gut. It's as expressive as it gets. As usual, the parts were well balanced. Now I'm spoiled. No one else will do. I am coming very close to being addicted. Need a regular VoM fix, or I'll go into severe withdrawals.
