    My daughter was diagnosed with ADHD at 4 years old. I was terrified to medicate her. But we tried everything else and it wasn’t helping. She was constantly in trouble at school and was depressed because she was always getting scolded. Now, 3 years later, an entirely happy kid who can show off her brilliance and artistic side because she’s not fighting against her brain and impulses. I hope you are also able to feel your brain is working with you. ❤️

    • @brittanyjokela4459
      @brittanyjokela4459 4 года назад +6

      I'm curious. What did you do to help her and turn her into a happy kid not fighting her impulses? Cause that sounds EXACTLY like my 5 year old son who also has ADHD. He's always in trouble and such and I don't know what else to do. He is medicated. But please, tell me your ways!

    • @smay745
      @smay745 4 года назад +8

      Brittany Jokela Hugs, sweet lady. I know the feeling. We spent a ton of time finding her triggers. She is mostly triggered by sound. So she wears protective headphones in school whenever possible, and we found compression vests and hanging bars help her get out the tension when she’s “feeling like a volcano” (what she says it feels like). We have also found that Guanfacine at night and Ritalin in smaller doses throughout the day are better than one big dose.
      It took months and MONTHS of trying everything we could think of, and she still has days (as we all do) where nothing helps except crying and slamming a door. But it has been so much better than it was three years ago.

    • @brittanyjokela4459
      @brittanyjokela4459 4 года назад +1

      My son is on Guanfacine too. I don't see much of a change in anything though. I'm not sure what else to do.

    • @smay745
      @smay745 4 года назад +2

      Brittany Jokela I would check with his pediatrician or a behavioral specialist. I believe there are ritallin patches that can be used for younger-than-usual patients like our littles. That might help the impulse control during the day.
      I truly do know how awful it is. We went through 8 daycares in one year when she was younger. It’s so sad to watch them lose their spark. And it’s so hard not to lose our temper. I honestly still have tantrums myself when I feel like I can’t reach her. But thankfully her brain is maturing and learning each day. And getting us one day closer to being her best self.

    I was diagnosed with ADD at about age 45. It changed a great deal for me, particularly in the sense that it allowed me to stop feeling helpless about how I was in my life.
    And Ritalin and/or Adderall...allowed me to think deeper and more complex thoughts than I ever had before. Once I could hold onto a thought train it was incredible how far they would go, combined with the wide-ranging info gathering ability of our brain type.
    The other side of it is that ADD brains are also better at some things than other people's, big picture thoughts particularly, so while you may not always the most efficient at getting something done, you often have a better perspective on whether its the right thing to do in the first place. And isn't that actually more efficient?
    Good luck on your journey.

      My husband is in your situation. I suggest applying for Social Security Disability. It is difficult, and I'll tell you now, they set it up to discourage people. You WILL be turned down upon first application. Almost everyone is. You likely will be turned down on appeal. Third step is where I was accepted, where you present your case before a judge, in person, with a lawyer who will take 30% of whatever you qualify for from when you first applied until acceptance, but those thousands you already don't have are a small proce to pay for the benefits received. After a small doughnut hole of $350.00 each January, all of my expensive meds are completely covered (I have HIV). My hip replacements were entirely covered. My every ER visit for asthma, or whatever else, covered. Literally any medical need will be covered. Feel free to contact me, ask me anything. I literally live to feel appreciated, so use me like a resource. I will be seeking help myself with a scan, as I'm HF Autistic, suffering extreme, unremitting depression. I've attempted suicide several times, but I'm glad I'm still here, and glad you're here on Earth with me. I wish you healthy longevity, and prosperity.

    I was diagnosed with ADD and ADHD as a child. I literally could not sit still until I got put on medication. At first I was on adderall and it wasn’t good for me at all. I’ve been on Vyvanse for majority of my life. Then I thought once I got out of college I didn’t think I needed it anymore.. so I stopped taking it and it really wasn’t good for me either. I was literally off the wall and I was acting completely different than what I usually did. So I got back on it here recently... it’s been a real struggle to live with ADD/ADHD to feel... normal. But I’m trying to embrace it because it’s something that makes me, me.

    I feel like I'm rewatching everything I've felt in my head. The worry, fear, and the constant feel of falling apart. It was also hard to deal with things, cause of the meds. They made me dead inside, and sent me into uncontrollable fits where I'm hitting myself, screaming, and shaking for hours.
    I still have not got much help, and still deal with bad things, like relapses from meds. After years of random diagnosis. They finally found that I had, what they told me in simple form "tripolar". I cannot take any meds, they're dangerous. Plus the only thing I can do, is just deal with it. They said due to this, I am disabled. Yet even though I've dealt with this, for over 20 years, and yet I cannot get disability.

    • @injunsun
      @injunsun 4 года назад +3

      James, have you contacted an attorney? I didn't get disability until my third swipe, the step where one goes before a judge with a lawyer. An attorney will help you get diagnostic testing, specifically for gaining disability. The attorney pays for it all, with the stipulation that when you get accepted, they get 30% of what your back pay is from your initial step of applying. Almost everyone is turned down when they first apply, and when they appeal. Most people do get accepted by a judge. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

    Sorry for commenting 2 times. I also have ADD and C-PTSD. I am doing a therapy called EMDR for my PTSD and it’s working miracles. Yes, it’s really REALLY hard reliving my horrible childhood but it’s definitely worth it because I am slowly healing. I also started actually reading the Bible and strengthening my relationship with Christ. I know without God I wouldn’t have survived all that I have. I also have over 13 years of sobriety from alcoholism. I will be interested to hear if your ferritin is low, high or just right. I can’t get my ferritin levels to stay above 35. My Dermatologist said ferritin has to be minimum of 60 for hair production alone. Often times children diagnosed with ADD/ADHD actually have low ferritin levels. Instead of being nourished children are being medicated. The mental health system is doing more harm than good the way it is right now. God please bless, heal and protect everyone here!❤️🙏🏼

One thing I can say there is no easy answer, everyone's metabolic system is different. Keep that in mind when going through this, some will get better very fast. While others will take more time. Laura, this will be a turning point for you. I’ve had periods in my life since diagnose without any medication and it worked - but only under very specific circumstances. When those change it’s fundamental to have other alternatives. I’m seeing my meds a bit like a supplement - my brain is in actual lack of something. It’s amazing what you can complete and connect with when your brain isn’t running in 200mph 🤷🏻‍♀️
    So, from my ping pong brain to yours - welcome to the club! We love squirrels.

    Omg Laura! We have the same experience! Alcoholic upbringing, and ADD all my life and I was diagnosed at 42 years old! The dark times you’re taking about i call « impending sense of doom » I experience it on the daily until I take my meds. Meds combined with trauma therapy has been incredible! I’m looking at trying SAM-E instead of my med this year. It is night and day though since before treatment. I’m so happy for and I suggest watching lots of RUclips videos about what add is and you’ll have your mind blown! Dr Gabor Mate talks a lot about add and trauma and alcoholism. Alfie may show signs of add by 1st or 2nd grade and your first hand experience and education on it will be such a blessing. I was diagnosed after my son was diagnosed and I educated myself about it. It’s not laziness!! It’s Executive Functioning Deficits and stimulation seeking. I used to drink 10 cups of coffee a day - after meds I only want one💕 it’s mind blowing. “Drummer and the Great Mountain” is the best adult add resource I know of that’s all natural and no meds - awesome podcast and book with nutrition info. I’m also vegan so protein is tough and super important. Here’s a great channel to start with! ruclips.net/video/cx13a2-unjE/видео.html

    Thank you guys so much for making this video. It's really making me think back on my own life and I realize I am just like you Luara,... I'm not bipolar (at least I don't think I am) but I do have the same problem with memory. I'll remember some of the more important things but for the most part I've forgotten almost all of my childhood. More recently though with the state of the world I've found myself more than once thinking very negative thoughts (not suicidal,... I'm afraid of death.) but after watching this I think I might try and reach out and at the very least talk to someone close to me. Then maybe if I grow a big enough pair of balls maybe even seek some form of professional help.
