    Where I grew up in California, we had a tiny native wild strawberry about the size of a fingernail. These tiny red gems had the most intense strawberry taste ever, and have forever spoiled me for the cultivated varieties. Sadly, development has eliminated most of the habitat where we kids would pick them.

    Heirloom carrots not only have different colors, they all taste different, too. The purple ones have a much more earthy, root-like taste and they will stain absolutely everything they come into contact with, except broccoli. Red carrots taste less sweet than orange carrots. Yellow carrots are my second favorite, only topped by white carrots. They are sweet, juicy and particularly good for salads.

      I regularly buy rainbow carrots instead of orange ones, just because it makes me happy that they're weird. They look so pretty sliced up into homemade rice pilaf. In my country we have three types of eggplants.
    1. The original eggplant( the short white ancestor,) we still grow them and they’re called JAKATO and they stay white no matter how long you cultivate them. There is one breed of the Jakato that will turn yellow when ripe.
    2. We also have another eggplant called MORKABI which is round just like the jakato but bigger. It’s green when raw and will turn yellow or yellow and purple when ripe.
    3. And of course we have this long purple one that is the most recent and we call them JIBLOX.
    All have different taste but we generally prefer the first two so I don’t have much of a memory on the purple one’s taste. Haven’t eaten it in maybe 7-10 years. The second one is hella bitter when ripe tho so we always soak it before we cook. Turns dark brown too if you don’t keep it in water before cooking.

While other bananas can be somewhat slippery under very specific conditions (as the Mythbusters proved), the classic slapstick idea of banana peels being instant hazards if dropped on any sort of surface is thanks to the Gros Michel.

    • @skyguyflyinghigh
      @skyguyflyinghigh 9 месяцев назад

      they are poisonous, well a better word would be toxic... just not the actual tomato, it's stems, roots etc still have small amounts of toxins in them, and unripe tomatos have similar, so if you ate enough of either you wouldn't feel very well both with different effects, and if you had the know how you could theoretically purify it into a better toxin,. not a lethal one just not good for you and really not a good time so i imagine their hatred of tomato's was just because a bunch of people tried one or both without proper knowledge and said "fuck this, im gonna tell people this isn't good eatin"

    I'm Jamaican. We eat those old eggplants here still. They are somewhere between fit and green and we cook them with other things like salted fish or ackee. We had no idea that's what they were

    I think some farms do grow the white strawberries as I have seen them in Costco on a couple occasions. I actually prefer the white strawberries which they call Pineberries or something similar. Price wise, they are slightly higher than the RED strawberries.

    One berry that hybridization has ruined is the blueberry. 50 years ago, they were smaller but actually tasted like blueberries. Today, the only blueberry-tasting deserts are artificially flavored. Now, these giant blueberries taste like grapes. Such a shame. Don't get me started with bananas! Great video, BTW. Thanks.

      We still have wild blueberries here in Maine. A huge difference between them and their commercial cultivars.
