Did Abe's Oddysee yesterday so naturally was going to do Abe's Exoddus today, though this is more of a comparison looking at some of the changes between the original game and this modded version.
I love these videos where you are just so excited to make the content and upload the vid, you record live audio, and you are so passionate and into it that you frequently cut yourself off on a new train of thought, or something else you notice in the moment. It also reminds me of the "good old days" before you made it as a youtube Big Cheese! Thanks for the entertainment PB, you have me super hyped for this release :) P.S. nice easter egg with the HD closing sequence!

Our goal is to add support for asymmetrical sprites so things like Dripik's medals and eye patch can appear on the proper side (the original games just mirror flipped the sprites for when you're turned the other way). Enjoy the pre release!
10:45 my theory for why Dripik was mirrored was to save on memory space on the disc since you could only fit so much on the PS1 discs since that probably would have been another several sprites to just for turning left or right when simply mirroring it didn’t take up as much space. It could very well have been a matter that turning never required a new sprite and it only truly became obvious with Dripik cause he was the ONE character that was asymmetrical in features.
13:41 my favorite detail in the Slig Barracks is the fact that the ONLY reason they had the Sligs use sleeping bags hanging from the ceiling was to make it more obvious that they had beds rather than having to figure out a way to depict them in military style bunk beds. I don’t think anyone actually ever noticed that they were using sleeping bags 😄
Yup. Had some cool levels though, the funicular looks amazing, but they should probably have dropped the tower defence and the sleeches! (They were no substitute for fleeches!)
@@Tarragon_ there is no reason the 'innovation' (popular game mechanics from different games that do not work in abe) couldn't have been in a fresh game, but they had to re-write exxodus to capitalize on nostalgia and the success of the (more or less) properly remade odyssey. It is corporate-driven, board-room garbage riddled with white guilt (upper-class, globalist midwit guilt) wearing a decent game like a skin suit.
These guys really did a great job with great attention to detail. The only thing I would suggest is to increase the contrast of the sprites a bit, add a little more shine to them to make them look closer in style to the backgrounds. Right now there is a certain softness in the character sprites, even if that are metal parts of sligs.
True, I believe this is a lighting issue but all the character sprites will be getting at least one more pass if not more. It's surprisingly difficult to get the lighting right on them since it's baked into the sprite and has to match every environment. That wasn't such a big deal when it was low resolution and in fact it helps separate characters and interactables from the background. But yeah in HD it's kinda tough lol

But in fact, it was pixelated, not enough of course to be entertained and taken away in this pretty odd world, but still, seems pretty bad today. I was hoping for Soulstorm to be a remake like New 'n' Tasty, alas I found a completely different games with a lot of flaws (which didn't have in the original). This HD remaster is a great thing for me.
Same, I was so excited for a New 'n' Tasty style update of Exoddus (easily my favourite of the two). Instead, they went full George Lucas on it and reimagined it from the ground up into something I enjoyed far less.
the spritework from that era was meant to be seen on a CRT screen. artists took advantage of the effect of the light from every pixel blurring into each other in order to achieve a higher effective resolution than what the game was actually running at, as well as other neat lighting tricks that gave a very immersive illusion of depth. on a modern LCD screen these effects are lost: strategically placed pixels that used to give the sprites more detail by blending now just look like isolated squares of color. and since the sprites no longer look properly illuminated since those squares were used for shiny or shadowy spots, the sprites look more like cardboard cutouts than ever, really pulls you out of the experience
thank god there are fans that reworking this masterpiece on their own after oddworld lost their mind a little bit and took wrong direction with soulstorm. Thanks for links!
I guess it´s decent. But I still prefer Much´s Odysee over Abe´s Odyssey and Abe´s Exoddus because of the better Controls, Fun Gameplay and having the better Concepts.

yeah the game flips EVERY sprite when you turn around there are no exceptions

I think it looks amazing, the character models look a little bit too claymation/shiny, but the backgrounds look great!
I'm sure the models will get better with time!

I like the pixeled look, but this really does look quite good. It reminds me of The Neverhood or similar styles of game.

Everything but Abe looks amazing. Abe's skin is too shiny and looks wierd. The rest is amazing!
