..and she was hitting the topsin backhand quiet well too. at that time, that stroke looked so natural and easy. i m was asking myself often if the change from the dunlop racket to the more powerful wilson racket some years had a negative impact on her backhand drive. that change was done unwillingly:the reason was simple: dunlop gad stopped the production of Steffi racket .i remember that she testet quiet long to find a new racket which fit to her strokes.
What an absolutely AWESOME display of tennis by Steffi off the ground. I'm not sure if I have ever seen another player hit such precise groundstrokes. So many outright winners! Pam was hit by a bulldozer.
It’s not just the precision (Evert and Hingis were also excellent in that regard), but it’s also the phenomenal athleticism and power that she combined it with.
This applies to all matches of this era, but it must be mentioned here because of Graf's great showcase of ability, but this isn't just with the old equipment, but it's the true modern equipment. These racquets were more standard and uniform, which made for fairness and less altering/helping/masking of the players' true abilities. But Graf did all that with these heavier racquets, smaller heads, less fuss on the strings, etc. Thank you, Ms. Graf!
In fairness to Pam Shirver, her R16 , 10-8 3rd set win over S Hanika , then in QF, def Sukova 10-8 3rd set, Shriver truly had almost no answer for Graf's passing shots. Credit to Shriver in earning 2 games. Sidebar, great to see Graf, serve/volley
@@spartansrace4293 Graf's foot speed and fast very consistent game bamboozled most the other women of her time Naturatlova had a fairly good record against her ; unlike Shriver , she could handle pace and volley d much better and moved way better
@@johnrenehan7406Pam was more than capable of challenging Steffi on her day. She'd beaten Steffi at Wimbledon 1985, came within a game of beating Steffi at the March 1986 tour finals, and was one of only two players to beat Steffi in 1988 (at the tour finals) and also held match points against Steffi at the 1988 Virginia Slims of Florida.
A shame Steffi couldn’t play like this in the final. Martina obviously had more weapons than Pam but Steffi was nervous and really couldn’t get her groundstrokes going in the same way as here.
@@Menexpert true , but playing an all round sturdier left handed Naturatlova in the final was a much tougher challenge too. Like how many times did Martina win Wimbledon???
Pam Shriver was also exhausted. She'd gone to 10-8 in the final set of her quarter final against Sukova and 10-8 of the final set in the fourth round against Hanika
I'm fairly sure this match was after that showcase semifinal of Evert/Navratilova. The crowd must've been gutted. After seeing Steffi do this to Pam, I felt she would win the Final. Alas, she was not quite ready for the all-time grass court player, Navratilova, who, to be fair, got several fortunate let cords on that Final.
The Wimbledon 1987 annual discussed that - it said Pam spoke to Martina about this match afterwards and told her not to read too much into it. She said she wasn't really into the match, no doubt exhausted from the series of very tough matches she'd had in earlier rounds. She also reminded Martina that she (Martina) had more shots to hurt Steffi with than she had. Having said that, I do think Steffi was very nervous in the final. Compared to her previous matches in the tournament, she played some fairly edgy tennis at times.
After this match, Pam Shriver had a word with her doubles partner, Martina Navratilova, and told her not to read too much into this match for the final. She said she hadn't been able to make much of an effort because she was exhausted from her two previous matches (both went to 10-8 in the final set, against Sukova and Hanika), and she reminded Martina that she had more shots to hurt Steffi with than she did. It turned out to be prophetic.
Pam Shriver was, in these years,, probably second only to Martina Navratilova in the serve and volley game. But she was systematically dismantled by Steffi, winning only two games on a surface that favors serve and volleyers like her. Martina of course would defeat Steffi in the final match. Still, Graf was, what, only 18 years old, but already a grand slam winner at Roland Garros. The next year, 1988, she would win all the major championships for the grand slam, plus the Olympic Games gold medal, a feat that will probably never be equaled by any man or woman ever... and if only for that feat, she does deserve the Greatest of All Time among the women...
Actually Steffi won not even one game to love. And only one to 15. Steffi won 59 points and Shriver 39. For comparison: When Steffi beat Seles in the 1992 final she won with 69-44 on points played.
Just a simple comparison : Steffi's forehand is an explosive shot, so quick with her wrist which she is breaking while hitting the ball, which makes the shot even more powerful. Pam's forehand is a kind of underspined : no pace at all, much too slow and uneffective. Pam was completely blow away that day !
Shriver at her best had a nice net game with ok ground strokes ; but a rather shakey & inconsistent back hand slice ( unlike Grafs ) let her down often
Pam would have had a much better singles game if she had been more patient and not rushing the net. She gets smoked way too much at net despite her height and reach.
This match should be called Steff’s greatest hits! A real demolition job
Absolutely outstanding first set , these are old rackets , and she's hitting the forehand so hard and clean , outstanding
@PhilipStacey-ty2em What do you mean “old rackets?” These are oversized graphite rackets, not wooden ones.

Top spin backhands are working , best player of all time , no question
Imagine if she is playing with modern day racket, her top spin backhand will be on par with or better than Henin's.

Your can already tell here that she was destined for greatness.

Pam Shriver was way too slow for Steffi : overwhelmed by winners from everywhere !!!

Graf was moving Shriver all over the court and unfortunately Pam had no answer
Shriver is hopelessly outclassed 😅
That's Pam Shriver who was ranked no 3 during Navratilova/Evert rivalry in mid 80's.😂😂
She was also ranked number 3 at times in both 1987 and 1988, when Graf was number 1. Not sure what your point is.

but Shriver does have over 20 singles tournaments wins in her career, so her serve/volley served her well...
Of course Stefi always won. Most of the girls played serve-volley only, you can t win if you only come to the net in the most pathetic moment
Yes, that‘s why Navratilova almost never won a match.
