DS9 was terrible as well. They would take Sisko, Dax, O'Brian, Bashir, Worf and then depending on what they were doing a bunch of non-starfleet characters like Kira, who shouldn't be doing anything with Starfleet unless it directly related to Bajor, Garak or Odo. There was also an episode of TNG where Picard was gone, Riker took over then went down to a planet, got captured with Worf & Geordi then Data & Troi also go down to the planet, with Crusher entirely absent from the episode. At least Voyager had an excuse that half the crew died.@@KingCrab85

Newsflash for you Martin. They've been doing that since the original series. That's where the standard started.
Here's another thing you need to remember loud and clear and this is from someone who spent 24 years in the military.
There is no such thing as an indispensable person. The Dominion War taught Starfleet that.

This episode taught me one major thing about Star Trek..... IN EVERY OTHER SERIES THEY DON'T TALK LIKE PEOPLE! Everything every word, every single measure of communication is measured and precise and proper and dignified, and PEOPLE DON'T TALK LIKE THAT.
And it was so PERFECTLY exemplified in Boimler trying to talk, the stuttering and rambling, and then PIke would respond to him as if addressing a formal fucking hearing to Starfleet Command, they don't just... chat, even in casual settings, TNG, DS9, Voyager, OS, everything! They don't ramble and talk over each other, and banter like fucking PEOPLE. It's like Polite Society completely overwrote all 'casual' interaction in the Star Trek Universe. and then Lower Decks arrives and holy shit, they just go at it and it just didn't HIT me until I seen this episode. :P

    1:26
Mariner, Boimler, Tendi and Rutherford enter the transporter room with Mariners ex girlfriend, Jennifer Sh'reyan manning the controls
Tendi with excitement: Alright! We're Ready To Go!
Jennifer: Coordinates set. It'll be a bit of a walk, but not too far. (as the landing party enters the pad) Listien, Beckett. If you ever have the time-
Mariner trying to ignore her: Energize.
Jennifer understood it was not the time: Sure. (beams them down)
    1:30
    The landing party beams down
Rutherford: Portal location is that way.
the party walks to the location of the portal
Tendi: Your still not talking to Jen?
    Mariner: Nope.
Boimler: Mariner, you have to talk to her.
Mariner: Look, I don't want her giving me any ideas of us ever getting back together. I mean, she broke my heart guys. When that Bitch Nuze wrote that Bull$#!^ article about me and the Cerritos, Jen turned her back on me like everyone else when I needed her the most.
Tendi: We didn't turn ours backs on you. We knew what Nuze said about you wasn't true.
Mariner: Yeah, but you guys are my friends and Jen was someone who I loved. I gave her my heart, and she threw it back my face. I will never go through that with her again.
Boimler: Look Mariner, we're sorry that Jen hurt you. We really are. But that doesn't mean you should go back to hating each other. Have you forgotten that she saved your life on that debris field when we went to save the Archimedes and the Lapeerian?
    Mariner: Yeah, I remember.
Boimler: All we're saying is if you don't wanna go back to dating Jen, fine. But maybe you should just try to be friends.
Mariner sighs: Will see. (the party made it to the portal) Okay. The ancient inactive thingy iiiiissss right over there. Let's go make sure it's still not doing anything.

I liked Jennifer up til she cheered when Mariner phasered her scared friends. And those friends were not rude to Mariner, just fussy. Sadly ,I have experience with these kinds of things. Whoever does that to his/her friends, will do it to their lovers in the future. Mariner tried to explain the truth to Jennifer, wich she didn't do to her friends, captain-mother or supervizor Ransom, but Jen didn't want to listen. Her captain mother had already called the shuttle for Starbase 80 to pick her up BEFORE asking her if she was guilty, but at least she had experienced her daughter's shenanigans before. Her friends Boimler, Tendi and Rutheford didn't believe in her innocence, but at least were sad she had to go. To my surprise, Ransom, who she had treated the worst on the ship, weakly tried to defend her and postpone the captain 's decision and was sad to see her transferred. Jen saved Mariner 's life, but Ransom saved all of them ( including the other ship), while oxygen was leaking from his helmet and the guidance system was malfunctioning. Jen needs to mature and Mariner needs good therapy for the traumas that make her act unhinged ( probably PTSD and abandonment issues from the klingon prison she mentioned and/or the Dominion war).

Of course they believed Mariner didn’t said those things on that article. They tried to stood up for her, but 3 voices wasn’t enough to convince everyone else and Mariner knew that and that’s why she left Starfleet out of spite to which she regretted later on and lead the California class armada to save the Cerritos from the rouge automated fleet and was welcomed back with open arms. I’m surprised that they haven’t promote her straight to captain of her own ship.

While I want to see some sort of resolution to the Mariner/Jennifer situation, it wouldn’t be happening here, as it hasn’t happened yet. Boimler’s stardate at the beginning actually places the 24th century portion of this episode right after Hear All, Trust Nothing, when Mariner and Jennifer’s relationship was likely at its strongest.

    Boimler went on a diagonal.
You see, there's a reasoning behind that. If you go backwards or forwards in the fabric of time, that is pretty straightforward. Now if you go sideways, you skip into a parallel universe on the same timeline. Now with our hero, he went backwards AND skipped into a parallel universe. In which had weird consequences.

One of the worst things they did in Star Trek Enterprise was trying to justify the TV visualizations of the 1960s as being a real-real in-universe thing instead of an artifact of television production of the era, because now we have no-lifers refusing to accept that ANY change in production values is due to modern productions having massively raised the bar on what is acceptable to see in television, and not some parallel universe where things are different Because.

That episode was an anniversary one and it stuck characters into existing footage, so they absolutely had to match the recon sets (which were much smaller rebuilds than you're probably thinking) with the original show (plus, DS9 was filmed in SD for SD televisions, so it wasn't such a jarring clash with how modern sets are designed back then). It was ENT that made a point of wedging 60s potato-resolution design aesthetics into a 720p HD place, where it really didn't belong.
