    Add headers. Always the best return for hp and mileage. Also, how about a old sp2p intake with a 2bbl adapter. Food for thought

      For sure good thoughts and you are correct! But, for this project in particular, we'll be using the factory intake and exhaust manifolds. Thanks for watching!!

    Up into the 13s around home and in the 14s to 15s on highway trips depending on wind, in an 81 W250, 318 4sp 4.10 gears. Probably could've done it with a two barrel but it's just easier to get jets and metering rods for a 625 Carter Competition, exact same carb as an Edelbrock Preformer. Intake is a 68 340.
    Best mileage it ever got with a two barrel was 11, normally wouldn't hit 10. Motor is a 1974 that still had steel intake gaskets, think I was the first one inside.

    Are you porting for fuel efficiency as well then? 8 kept my 1.78 valve heads when I ported mine. I think you would be surprised how well. Some well thought out/heavily ported 1.78 valve heads will do. Especially with the amount of velocity you can get going through those heads. My 318 is incredibly snappy after porting the heads, and four barrel intake

    You might be surprised about those stock push rods & their length. While they’re out measure them & just see if any are shorter. Put a straight edge across the valve stems tip even if you have the valves machined. Proper preload on the lifter & correct lift at the rocker makes some cheap reliable power. And better cruising

    Life of spark plugs will suffer but you can sidegap & index your plugs and point the open gap to the intake valve. Did this to a 361 big block and noticed an MPG boost and better responsiveness.

    • @samhicks97
      @samhicks97 2 года назад

      @@318willrun No problem at all. I also forgot, you may need to tweak the spark plug gap to be a bit bigger from factory spec, 35 thousands for stock spec, I made the gap bigger by 3 thousands, 38 plug gap is what I have.
      The above modifications will be more noticable if you have a high voltage coil.
      I set my distributor point gap to 20.
      Factory was 30? 32?
      With the point gap at that setting, you may notice the exhaust note is louder, more booming?
      Sorry for the long post, I didn't want to leave you hanging without getting the whole picture of the
      modifications.
      Initial timing is 20*
      The 361 I have is fairly low compression so I didn't bother with the total timing, doesn't detonate or anything which is interesting.

All of those goodies will definitely help you out with fuel mileage and power because the heads will be so much more efficient and while saving fuel you'll be making more powah which of course you already know because this isn't your first rodeo and you have probably forgotten more than most people will ever know . If you really want MPG, stop messing with the marginal gains you will get in that engine. Simplest most reliable change that will help is a A518/A500 automatic. You need to drop the engine RPM at highway speeds. Another option maybe to go to 2.73 ish geared rear axle, but IDK what you are running now. Finally ditch the carb. for a TBI. Those will move the MPG much further then swapping engine parts.
