  • The 1953 kidnapping of Bobby Greenlease shocked the residents of his hometown of Kansas City, Missouri, and the nation at large. At the time, the $600,000 his parents paid to the kidnappers was the largest ransom paid in such a case. The bumbling kidnappers were Carl Austin Hall and Bonnie Brown Heady. But the case had a tragic ending.

My grandfather was one of the arresting officers of Mrs. Bonnie Heady. He was also the first man questioned about the missing money. I grew up hearing about this case.

My dad was a cop/homicide detective during this time. My mom was upset about this because my brother, who was little at the time, has the name of Bobbie Green. It was weird and kind of scared her. And we lived near there, in St. Louis, MO..

@@petmomful2260 My mother grew up in Saint Louis Missouri. According to my mother, my grandfather was harassed and threatened when he was working on this case. My mother said she remembered police cars outside of their home but didn't know why. Once my grandmother was run off the road and my mother wondered if it something to do with the case. This was a hard time for a lot of people.

@@petmomful2260 Not sure. It might have been people who thought he took the missing money, or people who thought he could have saved Bobby but was too slow. I don't know many details since my mother was 2 or 3 at the time. I think she was kind of shielded at the time by her parents. I believe my mother may have been threatened too, but her parents tried to shield her from what was happening. I know more about the actual case from paper clippings of the time. I don't think my grandpa talked about cases he was working on at home, or at least not in detail.

I was only 7 when Bobby Greenlease was killed, but I remember it. He would have been my age and I recall my grandmother instilling in me not to trust strangers, not to get into a car with anyone and to be vigilant of my surroundings. I never knew the complete story, but I thank you for telling it to us.

My mother had taken care of Virginia as a caregiver toward the end of her life. I had already moved to NC at the time she was caring for her. I couldn't believe it when she told me that she was caring for Virginia. Virginia, according to my mother grieved the deaths of her children until the day she died. I'm not certain if she was just depressed because she was not at all well or if she never truly wanted to live that grief publicly or both. My mother would care for Virginia, clean house and then they would sit together through days of going back over the FBI report that Virginia was in possession of along with a copy of the book that Virginia owned. My mother said she was always a lovely woman and did so much for the community. Virginia would tell my mother many stories about what she experienced during that time. Just before she passed away, she gave my mom the entire FBI report. There are some redactions, but the intricacies were something else. Now my mom has passed away as well and has left it to me. I was born in 1961, but I know that the story was gone over and over during the course of my childhood and even into adulthood. There was another interesting thing that my mother told me was that while she was caring for Virginia there was a male in the house a lot of the time. I cannot for the life of me remember who my mother told me it was, but that this male was very cruel in his treatment of Virginia and my mother said she had to call him out on his behavior several times. I remember the deep empathy I felt for Virginia and my mother both because he wasn't nice to my mom either. I have tried and tried to remember who that was. I wasn't sure if it was someone she had been involved with or who he was, but he treated Virginia terribly. I just moved into a smaller place and again uncovered the FBI report as well as the book and when I get time, I will go through it again as it's a fascinating story told by the FBI and what they found during their investigations. I hope they're all together in heaven. I'm sure they are. Virginia was determined it would be that way. She and my mother were good friends until the end,. Except for talking to me about it, she kept all of Virginia's secrets, most of which I will take with me when I leave this life.

I know deterrence and the death penalty is a touchy subject, but it might be quite a deterrent today if potential murderers knew they'd be put to death within 90 days if found guilty.

@ Genghis Coen I absolutely agree. Today, if people are put on death row, they stay there for decades, and file endless appeals!!!! GOODNESS SAKES!!!! Bring back SWIFT JUSTICE!!!

This kidnap-murder case is extremely Saddening & Barbaric!
They were executed by a couple with completely “broken backgrounds”. Carl Hall was the worst! He was dysfunctional and loose from a very young age. No wonder his own Mother disinherited him.
People with “broken backgrounds” can go astray in many ways. They are not usually not “grounded” and their Character and Psyche can easily become loose. They are most likely to indulge in serious Mischief! History has proved this in millions of cases!
Stable Family, Upbringing, Education and Income are what keep Human society precisely that - Stable & Grounded!

One big mistake in this video. The gas chamber in the Missouri State Pen was built with 2 chairs and there were more than one double execution so no special chair was needed as stated in this video. The only thing that was a problem was that Bonnie Heady was the first woman to be executed in Missouri's gas chamber and they had to decide what she should wear. Missouri contacted California's San Quentin prison who had experience at executing women in the gas chamber, which was a simple dress and no footwear. Bonnie Heady wore a pair of scuff sandals for her walk to the death house but she was ordered t remove them just before she entered the chamber.

@@BubbleOfJelly shoes or socks were not allowed because they will trap and hold gas. The gas is mixed beneath the seat on which the condemned sits and rises beneath their feet. To keep the gas from being trapped on the body shoes are removed prior to them being taken to the gas chamber.

“They had to have a special gurney made so that they could be executed at the same time.” This is completely false. The MO gas chamber was used in double executions in the 1930s
