Our chipmunks are doing the same thing, except they are also chewing that vertical white piece too. My hubby made something similar, but about 6" tall. The chipmunks now have used that as a ladder and have climbed on top of the metal and are chewing even higher! Also, they have chewed the bottom rubber gasket all the way across on BOTH garage doors. 😫
There is a Rodent Guard bottom garage door seal that has steel woven into it. Squirrels have no trouble chewing through aluminum mesh but steel wire stops them dead in their tracks. Same with mice and rats--as soon as they feel the steel, they won't even bother trying. As for the sides of your door--sounds like you guys need a steel strip that will go all the way to the top of your garage door opening on both sides. One final thought--if the gap is big enough that squirrels can fit through, you should talk to a local garage door repair company to see if they can get the door hung better. Even my 40 year old, wood, 4-panel garage door sits much too flush to the frame for a squirrel to ever get through, even if there wasn't any weather strip.
I have a horrible rodent problem in my detached garage. Used repellent, bait along the wall by where they roam, and replaced bottom door seal but chew right through it even when it’s a thicker material, inside the garage there’s a mountain of droppings and smells disgusting. Any recommendations of what I can do? Do I just go crazy with bait around the area? What does rats hate?
If the rodent pressure is so great that they are causing additional damage, then a population reduction is needed. This can be accomplished through baiting or trapping. When the nuisance rodents have been eliminated, the likelihood of new rodents chewing through the trim is very low.
