How beautiful is Northern Greece. Edessa is like a time capsule, so full of history. Lovely caves and waterfall and ornate amazing churches. Loving this road trip. Can’t wait to continue the journey. ❤❤
I love Macedonia it is so beautiful, you see i am from Crete , which is so very different from Macedonia. I love the richness of the Macedonian nature. Thank you for the wonderful video.
they go to northern Greece as well (Macedonia, Thrace) mainly people from Balkan countries and then some Germans, Hungarians, Czechs, Ukrainians and maybe some others.
Greece is way more than just barren islands. And while you are navigating through the northern part, if you happen to stay the night at Kavala, Xanthi, Komotini, Serres, or Larisa, you wouldn't believe the evening life that's taking place there
Welcome to Kastoria Gabriel. Christmas season is obviously the best time to visit here, but spring and summer are nice too, with lush greenery everywhere. It's unfortunate that the weather has been bad these past few days, but then again rain and fog are part of Kastoria's charm, much different than the dry and hot islands most tourists are used to.
Hi Gabriel I was a bit worried when you hadn’t posted a video for a couple of days I thought that was the end of your journey through the islands so glad to see your still in Greece so as I have never been to the mainland this will be interesting 🙏👍🏴

If the ottomans pissed you off this much curious how you feel about the crusaders sacking many. Many Greek churches including sacking of Constantinople. They destroyed relics and a lot of history throughout the region. Or how about the Roman’s and what they did to history. 🤔
Oh wow, did they do that? Strange that they don't ruin them in Istanbul for example. How many mosques have the Greeks left behind in Greece from, say, the 1600s
@@Tosunce Ottomans came to our land, occupied, enslaved us and destroyed our places of worship like this church and you are here wondering why we may have shown the same level of respect when they finally left? If you have time visit the new museum at AIGAI - Vergina, just opened, about the Mathedonian Kings. Also Platamon castle near Katerini by the sea is very impressive

So glad finally a big youtuber discovered Edessa. It has this and so much more to explore here. I'm saying it over and over but there is a lot more in Greece than just the sun and the sea.

The second church (10:30) is definitely modern. I think it was built in the 1920s, and it's one type of Byzantine Revival that was common in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Ottomans being iconoclasts due to Islam (an aniconic faith) usually tried to destroy the Christian icons or frescos in the Churches they captured. They aimed specifically at the eyes of the saints or Christ, the icons depicted

@@Tosunce A few, why? Why should the Greeks respect the culture of their oppressors? The Ottomans were occupiers who forced their foreign culture into the country they conquered. I used to work in Thessaloniki and Alexandroupolis (2017-2020). Northern Greece (Macedonia and Thrace) are great and much calmer to live - and to work - there! Enjoy your travels!❤
You can go to the picturesque city of IOANNINA Ιωάννινα in Epirus. It also has a beautiful lake like Kastoria with a small island in it. And then from there you can visit the famous archaeological site of DODONA Δωδώνη which was an oracle like the one at Delphi but even older. It is worth the visit. Enjoy your travels in northern (Macedonia ) and northwestern ( Epirus ) Greece. PS While in Kastoria try to eat Μπουγιουρντί Buyurdi. Spicy and tasty !
Wow! Those frescoes reminds of the ones in the wooden churches in northern Romania. The modern part of town reminds me of Bitola just on the other side of the border in North Macedonia.
DEFINITELY go to Naoussa ( town and Agios nikolaos park ) , the tomb of Vergina , and POZAR Baths. Naoussa used to the the Paris of East europe, before her economic downfall
The big, beautiful Church in Edessa looks very similar to the Panagia of Agiasos, Lesvos. A beautiful, big Church with similar frescos, furnishings and lights. Well worth a visit, as well as roaming the laneways of the town. Lots of quirky ceramics/pottery shops.
Hey glad you made it to my father’s village of Edessa! (pronounced Ethessa) I think you’d enjoy Volos and the mountains before heading to the island of Skiathos.
Those columns are inspired from ancient greek themes and others are from ancient temples, which Greeks converted to christian, using the same building materials, due to the high cost of marble..

If you're in Edessa ever again I suggest you check out the cliff and the abandoned factories there, the place is lush like a jungle and there's a path via the cliff to the ancient city. One of the activities tourists don't know is mountain biking on the hills around town that are covered in a mixed forest. If you wanna roam around you can also check mountains and lakes a few km up north, you'll enjoy some of the best nature in the country. You can go hiking to Kaimaktsalan, see the wetlands of Agras lake and visit the Pozar hot springs if you haven't already. Thank you for showing the history of my homeland and it makes me proud that you loved it so much :)
Vergina definitely and Nymfaio is pretty close! I wouldn't miss these...Ioannina and the amazing Zagorohoria as well. The beauty of the Vikos Canyon is beyond words
... and there is only one Macedonia and it is greek... so, you parked your car in the greek style 😅oh yes, we do have our own style of parking!!🤣the ottomans aimed basically the saints'eyes on the frescoes in the churches, unless they were too high to reach them. Kastoria is considered the live Byzantine Museum of Greece, thanks to many churches of that period. Parga brother is gorgeous, you'll be thrilled !!!❤Thank you Gabe !!✌✌
Forgot to write, if you have never visited, the small island of Meganisi, it is worth a visit. 30 min ferry from Nidri, here you will sail past the island of Skorpios, which you have probably heard of, otherwise try searching for it. Tina
I saw Gabriel filming in Edessa and he pass me in the sidewalk , and i didnt realise he was him until i saw this video,i thought i saw i regular tourist walking... unbilivable!!!
Oh man, you missed an opportunity to visit Pozar hot springs, the place is beautiful, it's a 40-minute drive from Edessa. FYI the village at 26:00 is called Lehovo. You should definitely take the old mountainous road from Kastoria to Ioanninna through Nestorio village. A tour to Ioannina would be awesome and maybe visit the Ancient Donona and the wax museum of Vrellis near the town. I made the same trip a week ago, the lamp chops at Konitsa are a must. ;)
The wall iconography in the second church is definitely new (i.e. probably 20th century). The temple looks glorious so it must be quite old. Good iconography today is next to impossible to find: it is all quite stylised and is mostly based on quick reproduction techniques, not original artwork. Old iconography, by contrast, has a living, eerie and very ethereal quality: its very purpose is to portray the world beyond the physical, ephemeral one.
Back in 1990 the roads up north were in terrible condition, as in the whole country. The main pass from east to west up north was the Katara pass. The buses would go through this. So if I remember well the KTEL bus from Thessaloniki to Ioannina and subsequently to Igoumenitsa would go through Larissa, Trikala, Kalambaka and Metsovo. That means not through West Macedonia, but through Thessaly and then Epirus. There were minor roads from West Macedonia to Epirus but in very bad condition and we were passing through mountainous spaces with very few villages. I drove in the summer of 1993 from Zagori, north of Ioannina, to Kastoria and it took me more than four hours.
Actually the correct pronunciation is E-dessa not ed-E-ssa. At this time it is wiser for someone to go to the south to avoid the bad weather, from June to September it is better to visit Northern Greece. I know you have come to Crete but I think you will like the eastern part of it and it was a good choice for this season, we have 30 degrees Celsius here.

... and there is only one Macedonia and it is greek... so, you parked your car in the greek style 😅oh yes, we do have our own style of parking!!🤣the ottomans aimed basically the saints'eyes on the frescoes in the churches, unless they were too high to reach them. Kastoria is considered the live Byzantine Museum of Greece, thanks to many churches of that period. Parga brother is gorgeous, you'll be thrilled !!!❤Thank you Gabe !!✌✌
👍 👍 👍 ❤for your comment and for the great video Gabriel does!!!
@@mariafentis go when you'll get the chance, it's another aspect of the beauty of Greece.✨❤
I was there, very beautiful! Thanks!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hello. about the weather, I'm currently in Nidri/Lefkada, it's warm here but somewhat mixed weather, there's a fog of haze here. . Good trip. Tina
Ha, cool.
Power to the People, Right On! ✊
Geia sou Gabriel!
The waterfall is not the only one located within urban area in Europe. There is another one in a small town of Jajce in Bosnia.
26:15 town appears to be Lechovo
Actually the correct pronunciation is E-dessa not ed-E-ssa. At this time it is wiser for someone to go to the south to avoid the bad weather, from June to September it is better to visit Northern Greece. I know you have come to Crete but I think you will like the eastern part of it and it was a good choice for this season, we have 30 degrees Celsius here.
Thank you sooooo much!!!!❤
The last videos are one better than the other!
What happened to the one before this one🤔
0:56 that Greek theme hits hard! 🎶🎶🎶
Gabe in Dispilio was found the homonymus Tablet, with the oldest Inschrift of the whole world. The Tablet of Dispilio.
Surprise twist towards west. Also great places.
Try the hot springs in Loutraki. You’re not that far from Edessa.
What you ve said can be misleading, you mean Loutra (=Baths) Pozar which is located relatively close (to Edessa).
Thank you for seeing and correcting that Kostas
As a Canadian. Hey slick! 🦫🇨🇦🦫🇨🇦🥓🥓🦋🦨🫎
Cool!
Hello This is where I am from ❤🙏😊
Hello Gabriel, you should go to Little Papingo village in Epirus, the route from Kozani Prefecture (not via Egnatia road) is amazing!!!
What happened to the previous video you made about the flat earth?
