Hi Gabriel. In part 1 of your visit to Skyros, you mentioned that you had visited a ghost town in Turkey, Kayakoy. Kayakoy was an old Greek city called Livisi. Its port was Makri, today's Fethiye. When you visited Marathon, the town you passed through to get to Marathon is called Nea Makri and it also has the Livisi area. With the Asia Minor disaster in 1922 the inhabitants of the two cities in Turkey settled in the Marathon Bay area.
We my Husband and myself have been lucky enough to stay on 14 Greek Islands, I agree with everyone who say every Island has its own identity, and history. Greek people are so very proud of their heritage, and rightly so too.
Imbros & Tenedos were given to turkey to protect the straights. They were originally supposed to have a Semi-Autonomous status since the majority of the Population has been Greek since Antiquity. From my understanding, the turks used them as mostly as Prisons, which along with the lack of respect for their special Autonomous status which was supposed to protect the Human Rights of its Greek Citizens prompted many of the Greek inhabitants to slowly move out. There was a huge Greek Population in Constantinople up until recently as well, which was also had a special protected status according to the Treat of Lausanne, but the pogroms conducted by the turks in the 50’s has slowly made it dwindle to just a few hundred. Practically ending the Multi Millennium presence of the Greeks in these regions.
Beautiful Gabriel!Thank you for loving my country and showing it with love and respect it feels as if I am there in Greece as i follow your videos also love the Greek music in the background 😊
Samothrace is the most unique island in the northern Asgean imo. Lots of hiking and climbing opportunities there plus it was the site of the Cabeirian mysteries in antiquity and the sanctuary of the Great Gods. The statue of Nike of Samothrace was found there and it is now in the Louvre
I was on Skyros around 10 years ago. My trip was with the ferry from Kimi and we stayed a couple of days in the harbor town Linaria. The ferry arrivial was a special event. It's great to watch the ferry dock and enjoy a frappe at Kavos. Have fun!
Hi Gabriel, it doesn't get any quieter, very peaceful and relaxing. Greece being a sizeable country has a small population compared to its European neighbors which I find surprising. Traveling to the Greek Islands is a big part of Greece there is the rural lifestyle of how people lived for thousands of years and continue to live. I see many of these homes as retreats from the mainland, especially now where they're very accessible.
Well unfortunately the mainland is all mountains, we're one of the most mountainous countries in Europe, check a geophysics map and you'll see that the only plains in the country are Thessaly (the bread basket of Greece), Attica (the region where Athens is located), the Vardar/Axios valley in Thessaloniki, and a few valleys in the Peloponnese. That's why almost all of the Greek population is located on these areas. Until the proliferation of air travel, it was much more easier to take a ship and sail from Athens (Piraeus) to Crete, than travel by land from Athens to the Epirotan capital, Ioannina
Gabriel, it's high time you travelled to North Aegean. The islands of this complex have their own distinctive beauty. An ideal port to start this trip is Kavala, as all but Samothrace are connected to it. For Samothrace, you would need to take the boat from Alexandroupolis. (not sure if the ferry Lemnos-Samothrace still operates). If you happen to be close to Kavala, a visit at Nestos River Straits is a must. There are still Greeks living in Imbros (minority), because the Greek population of Imbros, Tenedos and Istanbul along with the Muslim population of Western Thrace were excluded from the population exchange.
We had the good fortune of visiting Limnos for 3 days last October, with friends who know the island. Will love going back if I am so blessed. 🙌🙏 Stayed in Atsiki; saw Myrina and Faraklou... loved it all 🤩
You can choose where you want to stay more green Islands or green main land areas are Ioanian Islands, Sporades, Chalkidiki, Samothraki, Epiros, Peleponese. More dry islands are Cyclades and Dodecanese region!

Hey Gabriel as another commenter mentioned you definitely need to visit Edessa, the Pozar and the surrounding area has great nature and hidden "diamonds". Also the Vikos Gorge ofc.
Love it when you explore new islands! Skyros sits somewhere between the Sporades and Cyclades both geographically and aesthetically. Skiathos and Skopellos look quite different with their dense pine forests🌲

My Turkish grandmother was born in Salonica (Thessaloniki) and was part of the population exchange. She lost at least two brothers to the wars. Sad history between Turks and Greeks but my two favorite places to visit. I love them both ❤
Only the Cyclades islands lok the same. Barren with white houses. Sporades are green islands, ionian islands have the Italian influence in architecture (especially corfu), Crete is a country on its own. It's very ignorant to say all 100+ inhabited islands lok the same
I have read, that only 6 % of the Greek population live on the islands. Crete not included. Public service, infrastructure like roads, electric and water supply, internet and so on are much less developed than on the main land. Not to mention education and health care. Tax evasion is rife on the islands, and on many of the smaller islands with little tourism people live in a kind of hilly billy existence. Perhaps this seems romantic and close to mother earth for some, suffocating for others. This has resulted in the mass exodus from many of the islands after WW2. Tourism has rectified this in the summer months, often in an artificial way. Less touristy, big islands like Lesbos, Chios and Limnos have survived quite well and have kept their population and managed to maintain livable conditions for the inhabitants.
@@phillipcarter8045 Please stop. 1 million Turkish tourists visit Greece every year, and we love them. They're far, far preferable to Anglosphere tourists. We send each other help in natural disasters. In the 19th century we wanted to regain our independence from the Ottoman Empire, and no independence movement was ever neat and amicable. Irish, American, Polish, etc. We're entitled to our civilizational continuity and self-determination too. You would never speak that way about the Irish, Ukrainians, Poles, Koreans, or Americans. "You know, those Ukrainians never liked the Russians"
@@KNIGHTTEMPLAR555 Turkey's large and diverse, and if you go more than 200 km from the Aegean coast, it's a whole other world. But there's nothing wrong with that. The people are lovely.
Islands of the Cyclades region can certainly all start looking a bit the same, with the whitewashed buildings and white outlined paved laneways. Other island regions can look very different. As an example, Lesvos island architecture is characterised by homes built from local stone, with tiled roofs and often a second story wooden construction called Sachnisi. The 18th and 19th-century mansions of the capital Mytilene are influenced by the Neoclassical and baroque style. Being so close to Turkey you see a lot of it's influence such as the Ottoman constructions Valide Mosque and the Yeni Mosque.
Some of these towns are remote and sparsely populated. What would you estimate most people do for work? It is so quiet in some of these videos, do you think some homes are vacation or summer homes? I enjoy your editing skills and choice of music. I am a newbie and find it very difficult.
Mostly tourism, probably some fishing, a little farming, managing businesses to support the locals. A lot of people go to Athens or elsewhere to find work.
The living and in my opinion most interesting part of Skyros Town is spread out on the foot of the mountain. The probably older and not easily accessible part on the top looks picturesque when looking from below and the view from up there is impressive, but that’s about it. But I think you have figured that out by now.
The last thing I heard about the island Lesbos’ was that it was being commandeered as an immigration area ! This was a few years ago .. and I can’t remember the news source.
ADDITIONAL NOTE, since you also mentioned Imvros and Tenedos When the Greeks built the Trojan Horse and left from Troy, they went hiding behind a nearby island .....at night they returned and burned Troy .......the island they were hiding behind, was Tenedos The 1923 exchange of population was not based on ethnicity but on religion ......Christians went one way, Muslims went the other way .......regardless of ethnicity .......but part of the agreement was also to keep 120k Muslims in northern Greece and 120k Christians in Constantinople .......the 120k Muslims still live in reservations in northern Greece but the 120k Christians of Constantinople have been reduced to about 2k after the taxation of 1942 (Varlık Vergisi), the Istanbul Pogrom of 1955, and the deportations of 1965 and 1975
Samothraki, northern Aegean the island of the great and ancient gods (kavirian mystery) the island of winged victory which is located in the Louvre France, in Samothraki the priestess was the mother of Alexander the great Olympiada 🇬🇷💙

I don't believe Gabriel has ever shown any interest in live streams unfortunately; I don't believe he has done even one. I agree that it would be a nice touch for him and his channel.
Yes, but 227 are inhabited by people. The rest are mostly just tiny islets with nothing much to see. There are a few larger uninhabited islands with some ancient ruins, etc. worth visiting.
There are the Ionian islands (the most beautiful beaches are in those islands, the nature too of course generally), there are Sporades, there is Thassos etc, there are the Cyclades etc. So, no, every Greek island do not look the same, since the first mentioned ones are greener, forest-like, architecture different (as culture is different, different tribes) while the Cyclades and all other islands in southern Greece are more dry and more stone-like.
The exchange of populations was based on religion only, so you had Greek speaking Muslims, who spoke no Turkish at all (called Vallahades) moving to Turkey, and Turkish speaking Orthodox Christians (called Karamanlides) who spoke only Turkish, moving to Greece. Of course there were approx. 1.5 mil of bilingual Orthodox Christians & a slightly lower number of bilingual Muslims leaving for Greece or Turkey respectively

Interesting history and background on Greece and Turkey.
They’re never liked each other .
@@joeb5080I agree completely with you.We feel close with Turkish people, maybe ,because, most of them Muslim Hellens.
@@KNIGHTTEMPLAR555 Turkey's large and diverse, and if you go more than 200 km from the Aegean coast, it's a whole other world. But there's nothing wrong with that. The people are lovely.
@@joeb5080 I LOVE ALSO THE TURKISH PEOPLE, AS FAR AS THEY ARE NOT IDIOTICALLY NATIONALIST.
Nice again ! 😊❤🇧🇦
4:57 I guess this is where Helen and Paris stopped on a way to Turkey
Hi Gabriel, a long time viewer. After visiting dozens of Greek islands, which is your favorite and for what reason?
i would much rather see the "island" than just some rocks :P
I am waiting to see Lesvos 👀
What video can I find where you are in this ghost town you were talking about where there weren't any people ?
ruclips.net/video/Nu_VimhL3gQ/видео.htmlsi=cOQcSiBXs1K6z8zE
Hey Gabriel. if this traveling/Video thing doesn't work out you could always teach ancient history, you think? Enjoy your adventures.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos Of course tourism but also there is intensive livestock farming and less fishing. Thousands of sheep and goats on the island.
Have you visited Leros, its one of my favourites and you would love the castle their
Yes, in 2009 but I don't have a video from there.
Hope you get a chance to make a video there such a beautiful island
Hi Gabe....is anyone ever in the churches you go into....I never see anybody?
No, I've never opened a church to discover someone inside.
Enjoying the content, keep up the excellent work 🤙
The living and in my opinion most interesting part of Skyros Town is spread out on the foot of the mountain.
The probably older and not easily accessible part on the top looks picturesque when looking from below and the view from up there is impressive, but that’s about it.
But I think you have figured that out by now.
Yes, I'll show the other part of the town in the next video.
I'm liking Skyros, I wonder what it is like in peak season? Maybe it's one of those islands the locals retreat to for holiday.
We have been to Thassos and Lesbos . Both great islands you should go 🇬🇷🇬🇷
The last thing I heard about the island Lesbos’ was that it was being commandeered as an immigration area ! This was a few years ago .. and I can’t remember the news source.
That might be true, but in that case they are probably being held in one particular place, not swarming the whole island.
When you showed the island of lesvos, you pinpointed the place I like best, but really from mid july it will become alive
ADDITIONAL NOTE, since you also mentioned Imvros and Tenedos
When the Greeks built the Trojan Horse and left from Troy, they went hiding behind a nearby island .....at night they returned and burned Troy .......the island they were hiding behind, was Tenedos
The 1923 exchange of population was not based on ethnicity but on religion ......Christians went one way, Muslims went the other way .......regardless of ethnicity .......but part of the agreement was also to keep 120k Muslims in northern Greece and 120k Christians in Constantinople .......the 120k Muslims still live in reservations in northern Greece but the 120k Christians of Constantinople have been reduced to about 2k after the taxation of 1942 (Varlık Vergisi), the Istanbul Pogrom of 1955, and the deportations of 1965 and 1975
🎉Spent 4 days on Santorini. Out hotel.was in the Caldera.
Your flight tomorrow is Sky Express flight GQ521 at 3:35 pm😅👍
Boom.
Hey Gabriel. I can see thast you love Greece. Out of all the places that you've been, can you tell me which country you admired the most
ruclips.net/video/9hR1Lc62onA/видео.html
To me.. they all look pretty much the same from the lense of Gabriel's camera..
You well come to Thassos Gabriel we hoppe to see you if you come
The opening music threw me off a bit, thought I was on another site....😄
Samothraki, northern Aegean the island of the great and ancient gods (kavirian mystery) the island of winged victory which is located in the Louvre France, in Samothraki the priestess was the mother of Alexander the great Olympiada 🇬🇷💙
You re in luck. The weather will warm up significantly over the next few days with 30+ temperatures mainly in central and southern Greece
Excellent, I'm ready for it.
As an answer to the question of the title, yes and no, but what's the problem of revisiting beauty ?? ☺✌💙
Gökçeada is imvros island, Bozcaada is Tenedos
Gabriel, would you ever consider doing live stream q/a? I have so many questions about traveling I would love to ask. You could answer questions from paying people first or put the live streams behind Patreon to bring in a little extra income
That’s a very good idea
I don't believe Gabriel has ever shown any interest in live streams unfortunately; I don't believe he has done even one. I agree that it would be a nice touch for him and his channel.
It's on my list to do one of these days. I always forget about them. Maybe sometime when I'm back in the US and not so busy making the travel vids.
They look similar!
Yes.
There's like 6000! islands total
Yes, but 227 are inhabited by people. The rest are mostly just tiny islets with nothing much to see. There are a few larger uninhabited islands with some ancient ruins, etc. worth visiting.
I know you knew this just letting others know because I didn't until very recently! It's an amazing fact that eluded me
There are the Ionian islands (the most beautiful beaches are in those islands, the nature too of course generally), there are Sporades, there is Thassos etc, there are the Cyclades etc. So, no, every Greek island do not look the same, since the first mentioned ones are greener, forest-like, architecture different (as culture is different, different tribes) while the Cyclades and all other islands in southern Greece are more dry and more stone-like.
nice😂... grocery stores??
Have you ever come across a snake while traveling in Greece? Is this something to watch out for?
Yes: ruclips.net/video/ztYYAuizV9w/видео.html
The exchange of populations was based on religion only, so you had Greek speaking Muslims, who spoke no Turkish at all (called Vallahades) moving to Turkey, and Turkish speaking Orthodox Christians (called Karamanlides) who spoke only Turkish, moving to Greece. Of course there were approx. 1.5 mil of bilingual Orthodox Christians & a slightly lower number of bilingual Muslims leaving for Greece or Turkey respectively
Certainly not, each having different geology, landscapes, history, vibe, villages, beaches
Have you travelled Pelion region of Greece?
Yes: ruclips.net/video/pd3Hd6xRMAY/видео.html
@@GabrielTravelerVideos Thankyou, I will watch it now. Take care. Enjoying all your Greek vlogs.
Have you been back there since that time?
@@GabrielTravelerVideos Pelion also has so many traditional villages, towns, nature parks, ski resorts, beaches, historical sites, coves and so on. I haven't been there in many years but it is a region that warrants a revisit imo.
@@ΕπαμεινώνδαςΛιάσκος Definitely. I worked at a retreat center there for a couple weeks so didn't travel around a lot, but had a nice experience there and saw some of the villages. I filmed more than that one clip but wasn't posting videos on youtube then, just filming random clips so didn't make a real video.
These are not foundations, but cavities hollowed out in the rocks to produce salt...
I see, good to know.

I see progress in history. The next step is to recall the role of Russia in liberation of Greece in the begining of 19th century.
👍👍👍
WONDER WHAT THE WATER TEMP IS THERE NOW ❓ ❓ ❓
I'll mention it in the next vid. In short, it's cold.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos THANKS DUDE !
😃👍🏻
Thank you Gabriel. 🙂 Every region in Greece very different. Cyclades, Crete, Ionian Islands, Dodecanese, Peloponnese, Epirus, Macedonia, etc, whether the region is peninsular (Peloponnese, Epirus), a contiguous island (Crete), or broken into pieces (Cyclades). This is why foreigners need to stop thinking in terms if "islands". Nantucket doesn't have more in common woth Key West than with Cape Cod, just because Key West is an island. Likewise, Nantucket isnt going to be radically different from Marha's Vineyard, just because they're different "islands"... you're still in New England, let alone Massachusetts. 🙂
Not looks the same, Lefkada is a different and most beautiful island 😊 My vote is for Lefkada.
so easier and cheaper to rent a car on each island rather than to take them on ferries?
Yes. But it might depend on your overall travel plans.
💙🤍💙
Does this dude ever get fed up of it.
Second 🥈😅
Yep, got it.
