I think, at the beginning of this volume, YWS was in denial about his feelings for A Qiao a bit. But then he saw A Qiao's smile and that's it. There's no turning back and he fell even harder for A Qiao. And when the old Yan is in love. He flirts hard and shamelessly it's hilarious 😂
I really appreciated that scene when Hulugu wants to fight Shen Qiao and several people come to interfere between them. It explains how people like and respect Shen Qiao, how, in the end, his gentleness and empathy for people made him so popular. This is really the story of his life: he's changed his vision of the world, yes, but he never lost who he truly is 💙 (I loved this volume, his relationship with Yan Wushi gets really funny and cute! Thanks for the review, I laughed a lot! ^^)
Yes! I love it! Everyone being like “This guy has helped us time and time again and if we were in his situation he wouldn’t hesitate to help. This is a good person and we must protect him at all cost!” And they stand between him and the most powerful man in the world!
The malewification of Yan Wushi 😂 Stitch so on point with "hilariously annoying" and "obnoxious" lol This volume is awesome, next one is even better and the extras... muah! LOVE THOUSAND AUTUMNS AAAH
I do like how mature the characters are in terms of emotions and self-awareness. These protagonists are adults over 30, they know who they are and recognize and process their emotions well. It’s very refreshing. YWS doesn’t have a crisis when he realizes he likes SQ nor does he come up with excuses for his past behavior. I wish he’d apologize, but yeah. And SQ doesn’t lose his temper when he’s angry at YWS. This story handles their emotions so well!
Yeah the romance is nice and all, but I also like it when people focus on other aspects of the story too. I believe there is an extra chapter with Shen Qiao and Qi Feng Ge which I really liked. I love how Stitch praises the novel for how it describes the fights, and I agree with her. One of the better BL novels with good fights that I've read so far. Don't see it very often in BL. (The other comment got deleted for some reason so I replied to this one instead haha)
So, in case anyone was wondering, the way the soup fight turns out is this: Yan Wushi distracts Shen Qiao by throwing a peanut really, really hard at one of Shen Qiao’s child disciples. Shen Qiao knows that it’ll hurt really bad because Yan Wushi is really strong so he turns his attention away to deflect the peanut, and while his attention is elsewhere Yan Wushi shoves the spoon into his mouth.
The way Yan Wushi told Shen Qiao why he travels with him was said in such a cute way 🫣 First reason the war thing but he calles it the less important reason and the other two reasons are way more important to him and thoes two reasons are to be with Shen Qiao 🙈💖
I so badly want to see yan wushi understand why shen qiao doesn't belive his feelings are sincere. I feel like that might be the only way for him to know how to confess in a way that shen qiao would take seriously.
It’s been a while since I read this but if I recall at some point there is at least a couple sentences where Yan Wushi acknowledges to himself that Shen Qiao doesn’t trust him anymore because of how he treated him
My favorite part from that apology soup was SQ did NOT want the soup and told grandpa, "I'm full" and grandpa was like, "Yeah, full of rage." Oh everyday I feel grateful for not having to deal with YWS. Everybody say thank you, Shen Qiao!
I cannot watch this and pretend to not see how the guitar in the back gives kictor little horns. Just her being a happy devil talking about danmei is priceless💖 Also, thanks Stich for the incredible summary, I get to really enjoy thousand autumns without having to read it 🥰
Never forget that Yan Wushi is a world-class manipulator, especially if there is an outcome he wants. He set up blind amnesiac Shen Qiao to kill under the false pretense that he's an Evil Gang member. Shen Qiao's essential nature is defined then. Thereafter Yan Wushi is entertaining himself by trying to prove to himself his baseline belief that everyone is evil at their root. Until he has to acknowledge that will never happen. Shen Qiao can only be urged, but will never be forced. By the time of rock fable, Yan Lang is pulling out every stop to make the relationship blossom. Yan Wushi WANTS WHAT HE WANTS and will even compromise... and the manipulation has purpose. Yan x Shen dual cultivating for life!
This video is everything 🥺❤ I always love your long-form discussions about these danmei novels. Makes me feel that I’m not alone in enjoying these wonderful stories 😊😊
The story Yan Wushi tells equating Shen Qiao to a common stone actually appears to kind of reference a passage in the Tao Te Ching (famous and arguably biggest Daoist text) the book actually references it a lot in its narration, especially in places like Shen Qiao's fights and in his moments of enlightenment. "Being like water" offering much and asking for nothing in return is another Tao Te Ching passage they quote a few times.
Poor Qiao going through it. The chess scene is funny. Like their just one bed trope. Nope yeet let play chess instead. Rip. Love how in sword con they were all fighting and the strongest fighter show up to get revenge. YWS and SQ just hightail out of there. The plot ongoing while they having the competition. Ppl just confuse. Rip Qiao. I shouldn't like him Qiao: When the next betrayal YWS: Simping over him Qiao: Where is the betrayal... I kind of like hanging around him but still don't trust him. I kind of miss having him backstab me. YWS: Why don't you trust me.... Qiao: What did you forget your last few betrayal.
I love this novel so much! It's so different from the others without it being super angsty to be just a wholesome, but deep story, with well written characters and great character development. Many people may find it boring from the slow burn, and because it's not angsty enough, but I really enjoyed it. It has everything I love: humor, character development, humanity, good vs evil, teasing, romance, slow built up burn. Plus, It's a great break from just reading Meatbun angst for a month straight. And I especially love cheeky characters who tease each other. I swoon for their relationship! It's so genuine and relatable!
Yan Wushi was really in denial for a while but he couldnt resist our A-qiao's charm jfjfjfjf Btw Hulugu didnt kill a-qiao's master. A-qiao's master beat hulugu and banned him from coming central plains for like 20 years. Then Shen Qiao's master died in these 20 years, Hulugu's people also tolt Hulugu died too so everybody thought Hulugu was dead but he wasnt he was just hiding and waiting for 20 years ban.
Book 4 has been like sold out or something at my Barnes and nobles so I can never seem to find it! I ordered my copy online and it should hopefully be arriving soon!
the audio drama is on youtube but if you want to support the ip you can go and pay to listen to it on mao'er FM site. I think there is a reader's card somewhere on the internet on the information.
lol, every time I hear questions about cultivation related things, I'm suddenly glad my parents leaned into Confucianist ideas a lot when I was growing up, and my dad loved martial arts and talking about Daoism/Buddhism. it doesn't really confuse me, i hadn't heard of spiritual cores (that was new and i had to do research, but i understood pretty quickly), but i did know about qi, and i'd already known about joss paper, and the spell sheets etc. so it wasn't a huge learning curve for me, i kind of feel at home reading wuxia/xianxia genre because it has such deep messages and thought provoking commentary. thousand autumns is on my list, but i'm reading 5 series rn, so i have to wait lol.
The more I watch you guys' Thousand Autumns recaps the more I think Stitch would absolutely love Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know. Also I'm at the chess bit right now and was immediately reminded of a Xiyao fic where they got married and LQR brought them a weiqi set on their wedding night because 'well, you won't be having heirs but I don't want you to be bored' 😂
So I found the scene! But it was wanxian, and now me and everyone in the Xiyao discord are confused because we ALL remember a Xiyao version of the same scene 🤦 Anyway the fic I found the scene in is 'The Wild Geese' s Tomb' by TheFeelsWhale. It's wanxian and Xiyao, LWJ dies before WWX comes back and is reborn in the middle of the Cloud Recesses arc. Drama ensues. Happy endings all round iirc! I'm going to keep looking for the fic with the Xiyao version of the weiqi board gift, because I'm convinced it exists. Will update if I find it 😂
ok, So please remember the "emperor's father-in-law" because he is going to be a significant character in the upcoming sequel of thousands Autums!! "Peraless"!!, which is going to be published pretty soon.
You know you’d think hearing the spoils for every volume would leave me satisfied to not read it for myself but! Ahhhh I gotta get my hands on a used copy of the first book asap i need to read the angst first handdd
Interesting. From what I'm hearing, this actually reminds me of Tian Ya Ke with those flirting fighting sequence, witnessing a straight couple love making session and it started with a flirt so when the feelings became real the other one had a hard time to believe it. Well, both are wuxia so it make sense. The difference is Shen Qiao is definitely a righteous hero figure and Yan Wushi is an antihero who works with him to balance things while TYK WenZhou is literally villains, I mean retired villains who became orphaned child's master.
I finally got around to watching your review of Vol. 4 of Thousand Autumns! This volume is my favorite because we get to see Yan Wushi finally "gay chicken too close to the sun" (to quote Kicktor during the review of Vol. 1) All in all, great video❤ But also, I wanna let you know one thing: the audio drama of Thousand Autumns has this one ending song that I dubbed "Yan Wushi waxing poetry about his Ah-Qiao" song. I will put the title (and see if a link will work too) so you two - and anyone else interested - can check the song out. Song name: Wo Du San Qian Bian Ni Link: ruclips.net/video/z5Wl6AZKeJc/видео.htmlsi=rs2-f0n6KY2fWMoG Hope you two enjoy it and take care!😊
You guys should watch the donghua if you haven't already. Although some parts are left out or simply not included cause of Chinese censorship, there are parts that were added that are just UGH! Chef's kiss! In any case, the donghua is REALLY good! You can watch it on RUclips all 16 episodes (Season 2 is still a work in progress). It was blocked by the official account but luckily, someone uploaded a video with all the episodes! Just a recommendation!

Just one small plot point, which is not super important, but kinda like a side-note: Hulugu did NOT kill Shen Qiao's master - he died "naturally" and Shen Qiao became his successor without having to get some great vengence (even though he took up his master's mantle because he kicked Hulugu's ass^^) Can't wait for your comments on book 5! ;)
I just read book 2. That betrayal scene... Yan Wushi starts being sweet, sure. But how does that take away the pain of selling Shen Qiao to a maniac for no other reason than to hurt him?? Yan Wushi didn't even get any personal gain out of it; he just wanted to hurt Shen Qiao

So many instances of Yan Wushi talking about their relationship. And Shen Qiao just thinking WHAT RELATIONSHIP???
I think, at the beginning of this volume, YWS was in denial about his feelings for A Qiao a bit.

the one thing I miss while watching "thousand autumns" was how snarky shen qiao's inner voice was.
I love how this gentle breeze of a person can be so internally snarky 😂❤
The way Yan Wushi told Shen Qiao why he travels with him was said in such a cute way 🫣
First reason the war thing but he calles it the less important reason and the other two reasons are way more important to him and thoes two reasons are to be with Shen Qiao 🙈💖
THE WAY I SCREAMED AT 8:35 WTFFFF YAN WUSHI WHEN I SEE YOU ITS ON SIGHT WTFFFF
satisfying to see YWS suffer the effects he did on SQ and uh...make up for what he did to him(?) the guy indeed got it bad
Yeah, I like how YWS has no one to blame but himself for the cold shoulder SQ gives him. Basically YWS’s greatest foe is his past self.
I so badly want to see yan wushi understand why shen qiao doesn't belive his feelings are sincere. I feel like that might be the only way for him to know how to confess in a way that shen qiao would take seriously.
