Here, Undyne tries taking on Undying form, but she lacks of that sudden rush given by that blow that wasn't an accident or self-defense, but a desire to kill. That rush that gave her the will to unleash the power to save the world. Instead here, deep down she thinks that you were only defending yourself, and that little but big feeling doesn't let her transform.
Even if its a "No-Mercy run", when Papyrus goes down and everything feels like its all wrong, she still doesnt have enough to go undying. Even if you never spared anything and just ran through as fast as possible, or even if you only spared monster kid, its still not enough. Saving the world isnt necessary unless someone is trying to destroy it. It makes all the worse when she TRIES but fails.
Deep. But yes, that would be why. In genocide, she feels the need to protect everyone. In neutral, she realizes that she started it. You had every right to fight back. She made it a fair fight, and you won fair and square. And she knows there's nothing she can do but keep fighting if she wants to accomplish her goal of helping free the monsters.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is when a neutral run makes your reset a guarantee. I swear, this Undyne death is x20 more depressing than the Genocide one.
+Griffin Jennings And because in the Genocide, Undyne puts up a decent fight, and she's fighting for a cause, to distract the player if nothing, to ensure the safety of Hotland and the Capitol/Castle. In the Neutral route it's just plain murder. No heroic sacrifice.
This theme has a sort of hopeless vibe to it, just the way it starts...and the rest of the song is like a ballad of grief and sadness... Truly a masterpiece of a game
Hellfax Umm..... Undertale is a better song as it is (obviously) the definition of Undertale. And... trust me, it's more emotional than THIS. This song has to try a little harder than THAT.

Undyne was just trying to save her people, and free them, and you just kill her. The only reason why she isn’t fully in her Undying form is because she knew that you were acting out of self defense, because you wanna live. This theme just hits harder to me.

I think at the end Sans told Papyrus that Alyphs, Undyne, Mettaton and Asgore all got killed by Frisk. That’s why he goes from ‘Nyehe...’ to ‘he...he...’ and then to complete silence.
In the No Mercy run, she dies a perfect, complete hero. In Neutral, however, not everyone knows she is dead. . . and not everyone will know what happened to her. . . R.I.P.
The No-Mercy run or the genocide run? They arent the same, you can legit walk through the ruins killing everything in your path and still get neutral because you didnt go out of your way to sweep the place clean

Odds are, most of the people who came across this were either already on a neutral run because of Toriel or figured they *had* to fight Undyne. And either way this really caught them off guard... Toby Fox, you sadistic genius. And what makes it even worse is that Sans has been quietly watching your every move since you left the Ruins. So if you ended up sparing Papyrus before, Sans doesn't even have the heart to tell him what really happened and lies to protect you both. If ever there was any way for a game to truly make you feel like the lowest of the low, this is it right here.
Yup,when I did my first run i spared everybody but when I got to Undyne,I tried the spare button many times,so i fought and killed her,I wanted everybody to be spared though,so i closed the game and reloaded my save file,then i decided to try to flee,I wasted so much time trying to spare though.
@@jennfreeman1962 3 years old but yeah first UT playthrough i spared everyone after first killing toriel then reloading my save file and sparing her (flowey called me out and it was scary), then ending up with this horrific nightmare that was undynes death and instantly going from lv1 to 7 (i had to look up how to spare undyne after reloading save again)
God, this takes me back. On my first playthrough I didnt know how to spare a lot of the bosses, and i was just killing most mobs left and right. Undyne was the most gut-wrenching because i kept trying to spare her but *she just never gave up*. And then i got her health to zero thinking i could spare her then, but then she still didnt give up. At this point, i sort of just left the shield down and took all the hits... And the worst part? Sans didnt even judge me. Just let me through. God, and then i killed Asgore to be with Toriel. Fuck...i wonder if this is how Walter White felt when he thought back to all the bodies he left.

+Papyrus Yeah I spared you with no problem. We even did the Hang Outs. In which you beat me. But i was pretty powerful after a while; i would get enemies down to half health, and death. They didn't even have a chance to surrender...god, it felt good channeling a character other than myself in my next pacifist playthrough.

The narrator loses its composure and isn't even able to narrate in the end, replacing narrations with ellipses. This gets more interesting if you believe that Chara is the narrator, after all Undyne doesn't seem too different from them, on some aspects. Chara idolises Undyne and describes her as the hero who never gives up, and even in genocide she is one of the few monsters who isn't seen just as "free EXP", but rather as a heroine trying to protect the world. Even if in genocide Chara at that point is giving in to the idea that the world needs to be erased, they probably still respect Undyne, even if they may believe that Undyne's determination is misplaced, as she is trying to save a world that, to Chara, deserves to be destroyed.

This has to be one of, if not *THE* saddest death in Undertale. The way that you’re forced to sit there and watch Undyne melt because she’s so determined, yet her body melts on the neutral route because she still believes that there’s some good in you is just so depressing. The way she repeats “I won’t die!”, really kicks you in the feels as well.
When i first read that, i thought "um, about that.". Undyne was in my way. If i, myself were put in that situation, i am almost sure I would have fought undyne, rather then spare. I mean, she is throwing SPEARS at you. Thats why, on my first run, thats what I did. And I won. I was happy i had defeated undyne. This song was not a theme of tragedy, but of celebration for me

Midway in watching a blind neutral RUclips playthrough of Undertale, I got the game and played it before any more would be spoiled. I decided to do some things different from the commentator (Vechs) such as sparing Toriel (I couldn't bring myself to kill Papyrus, though Vechs had also spared him). I wondered to myself "Hmmm, what would happen if I killed Undyne?" What happened left me terribly shaken and disgusted with myself.
Andreas The Phoenix have you played the true pacifist route? if not, here's a spoiler: in that route you get into Alphys' secret lab. There you find out, that humans have something, which monster do not: "DETERMINATION" (yes, it's written in all caps). Alphys tries to inject it into some monsters, which causes them to melt and fuse together (Amalgamates). The monsters bodies are not able to handle DETERMINATION. Undyne is the only monster who actually gets DETERMINATION by herself, however it's still to much for her body, which is why it's losing shape
Ryuu15 "Have you played the pacifist route?" The real question is if i played the genocide one because tons of people do the pacifist and less do genocide. And yeah i think i made a mistake. However that means what the game says is not a lie. Monsters may not have determination, but that doesn't mean they can't create it.
It's implied that Alphys injected determination into Undyne her self, purely out of fear from losing their closest friend. _"This is why i never told you..."_

This was painful to watch on my first Genocide Run. I thought that if I spared Monster kid, Undyne wouldn't go Undying on me, and it wouldn't matter since i can't kill monster kid anyways. So I figured this fight would be fine. i. was. so. goddamn. wrong. ಥ_ಥ I had to reload and just fight her normally. Fuck that shit. At least she's dies like a hero as Undyne the Undying.
This was a very powerful moment in the game for me. I had first killed Toriel because I didn't know you could spare her. Felt bad but thought that maybe bosses could not be spared... but then I could spare Papyrus, so I realized I probably did something wrong for Toriel. But then, Undyne began chasing me around, throwing spears at me... felt like she wanted me dead, unlike Toriel and Papyrus, and that sparing would not be possible. Still, for the whole battle, I would try to spare her, but the command was never yellow. And then, I dealt the "final blow" and...she refused to die. And that song kicked in. And she said all these things about not giving up, wanting to save her friends. I realized I messed up. Bad. To the monsters, I was the bad guy, even if I did not want to be. I did not want any of this to happen. Yet, every round, I was forced to attack her, with no way to spare her. Again and again. And see her slow down more and more, being more desperate... every round, I was like "Please no, don't do this to me, I don't want this, allow me to spare her...PLEASE" But it was too late. Nothing I could do would save her at this point. I was forced to look at her disappear, desperately trying to hold on to save her people... forced to deal with the consequences of my actions, even if I had no bad intentions. I was defending myself, but could not understand her, her motivations for doing this, and avoid this end. Not until it was way too late. I felt truly horrible. All I could do is finish her off... I did not kill a single monster after this. I know I could just have reloaded and tried to spare her, but I felt this would reduce the impact of what just happened. I just swore to figure out how to spare on my next playthrough instead. Seriously, I did not expect this game to have that kind of emotional impact on me. It really is amazing.

As HyperGhost said, she still has a tiny bit of doubt in here that you might still be a good person She can’t take out her undying form because you (probably) haven’t killed anyone else. She can’t take out her undying form because it’s the other monsters she cares most about, not herself. When she entered the royal guard, she accepted that an other monsters life was more than hers, and that’s what makes it so sad

In my opinion, the most disturbing part of this fight is "Flower pollen drifts in front of you." It isn't a line that appears on a pacifist route, only on this specific battle. I wonder what it means...
I think it's as a result of the Echo Flowers in the area, but it's probably symbolic too. My best guess is that it's hearkening back to the wish that some monster made that they could be free and climb the mountain. Maybe that wish was made by a younger Undyne.

I'd say the cleverness is up to debate. Surely you could argue that reusing the same melody/leitmotif is lazy-ish, but it's still rather clever. *NGAHH*

You tried to SPARE her Nothing happened You tried again to SPARE her Nothing happened However, through your DETERMINATION, you were able to go back and do the right thing.
Fun Fact: Even if Undyne the Undying would have managed to kill you, she still would have died. Monsters are not able to handle Determination and since Undyne had this much amount of it, it made her stronger, but the effect wouldn‘t last long and the after effects would melt her like she did in the Neutral run. As the True Lab showed us, Monsters turn into Amalgamates due to a little bit of determination. In Genocide or Neutral, there never is a Happy ending for her off screen.
imagine killing undyne in neutral, you hear this music and you have to carry the weight of your actions throughout the rest of the game. then once you finally finish the game, the ending kicks in and the same music plays
+SerperiorSC2 They're both one and the same thing, just that An Ending is done in full with the Neutral Endings, whereas Undyne's Neutral Death goes straight to where this video / music starts.

You just gotta love how this game gives an enemy the dramatic "final stand" music. Normally that's saved for a party member in a JRPG who sacrifices themselves to save you and everyone else.
I'm pretty much an emotionless husk of a human being, but the cutscene of Undyne's death, the repercussions from it all, it was just horrible to think about, so sad...
The genocide ending doesn't really have as much of an impact. She kind of just immediately accepts that she's lost. In the neutral run, she keeps trying to fight while she slowly dies. And with this music mixed in, it's a lot more impacting.
Yeah.... At least before Undyne the Undying dies, she dies with a smile on her face. However when normal Undyne dies in the Neutral route....it is so heart robbing........at least for me ;-;

im a dragon artist, and I made the mistake to draw while listening to this... my hands decided to draw an ice dragon, melting and crying. I almost had to stop drawing because my eyes were watering at the conbination of this and the sad drawing.
And I had the heartbreaking image of a dying Undyne in my mind, which is EXTREMELY sad, because Undyne is in my top three favorite undertale characters.(Sans is first place and Toriel is third)
When I fought Undyne and she was dying, I tried to spare her. But it was too late, and there was no exception. As Sans teaches you in the corridor, your actions have consequences.

Basically, you climbed up the mountain for no reason, fell in while invading the monster’s territory, and expected to feel good after killing a hero.
@@datcap6289 Bullshit. It was never clearly stated why Frisk climbed up the mountain. He could’ve done this out of pure curiosity, and then could’ve stumble and fall. So in-game he just tries to find a way out. Undyne is not a hero. She is a psychotic hypocritical murderer, who clearly enjoys maiming and hurting others, but goes nuts if Frisk kills someone even in self-defense.

god its been a little over a year since this came out and coming back to the soundtrack and listening to it is making me feel all nostalgic and emotional an shit agh,, this game gave off a vibe like no other ,, i havent been really into playing games myself but this is one of the only ones ive played and it has such a beautiful story,, i cant express enough how much i had loved this game, story, characters and just eVERY BIT OF IT
Undyne's Genocide death may be sad, but at least there she goes out a true hero and died knowing she had bought the other monsters time to escape, so her death wasn't completely pointless. Here, she dies desperately clinging to the last bit of determination she has in her, begging death for just a little more time. I can't imagine how humiliated she must've felt being murdered by a child (at least in Genocide it was more excusable to be killed by a mass murderer). I find this as easily one of the saddest deaths in the game (second only to Sans).
It's really sad that she's just trying to stop you but you killed her and everyone else is still thinks she's alive but she's isn't anymore and it's true it's sadder than her genocide death
I so much didn't want to hurt Undyne on my first try that I was like : "If I can't SPARE, then I'll FLEE!", turns out it was the good "answer"... So i never saw this ending except by youtube...

That's so sad...
Here, Undyne tries taking on Undying form, but she lacks of that sudden rush given by that blow that wasn't an accident or self-defense, but a desire to kill. That rush that gave her the will to unleash the power to save the world. Instead here, deep down she thinks that you were only defending yourself, and that little but big feeling doesn't let her transform.
Even if its a "No-Mercy run", when Papyrus goes down and everything feels like its all wrong, she still doesnt have enough to go undying. Even if you never spared anything and just ran through as fast as possible, or even if you only spared monster kid, its still not enough. Saving the world isnt necessary unless someone is trying to destroy it. It makes all the worse when she TRIES but fails.
Deep. But yes, that would be why. In genocide, she feels the need to protect everyone. In neutral, she realizes that she started it. You had every right to fight back. She made it a fair fight, and you won fair and square. And she knows there's nothing she can do but keep fighting if she wants to accomplish her goal of helping free the monsters.

It's because in the genocide one, since the fight is so difficult, your adrenaline is pumping, so you can't really process what's going on as well.

Undyne was just trying to save her people, and free them, and you just kill her. The only reason why she isn’t fully in her Undying form is because she knew that you were acting out of self defense, because you wanna live. This theme just hits harder to me.

Odds are, most of the people who came across this were either already on a neutral run because of Toriel or figured they *had* to fight Undyne. And either way this really caught them off guard... Toby Fox, you sadistic genius.
And what makes it even worse is that Sans has been quietly watching your every move since you left the Ruins. So if you ended up sparing Papyrus before, Sans doesn't even have the heart to tell him what really happened and lies to protect you both.
If ever there was any way for a game to truly make you feel like the lowest of the low, this is it right here.
Yup,when I did my first run i spared everybody but when I got to Undyne,I tried the spare button many times,so i fought and killed her,I wanted everybody to be spared though,so i closed the game and reloaded my save file,then i decided to try to flee,I wasted so much time trying to spare though.
@@jennfreeman1962 3 years old but yeah first UT playthrough i spared everyone after first killing toriel then reloading my save file and sparing her (flowey called me out and it was scary), then ending up with this horrific nightmare that was undynes death and instantly going from lv1 to 7 (i had to look up how to spare undyne after reloading save again)
God, this takes me back. On my first playthrough I didnt know how to spare a lot of the bosses, and i was just killing most mobs left and right. Undyne was the most gut-wrenching because i kept trying to spare her but *she just never gave up*.
And then i got her health to zero thinking i could spare her then, but then she still didnt give up. At this point, i sort of just left the shield down and took all the hits...
And the worst part? Sans didnt even judge me. Just let me through. God, and then i killed Asgore to be with Toriel.
Fuck...i wonder if this is how Walter White felt when he thought back to all the bodies he left.

But i was pretty powerful after a while; i would get enemies down to half health, and death. They didn't even have a chance to surrender...god, it felt good channeling a character other than myself in my next pacifist playthrough.
I don't think Walter White felt that way for every person he's responsible for killing, except Hank.

it feels like the narrator is just in shock here, like it's so morbidly depressing, what they are witnessing, that they have no words.
Frisk: "What the actual fuck am I doing, holy shit-"
The narrator loses its composure and isn't even able to narrate in the end, replacing narrations with ellipses. This gets more interesting if you believe that Chara is the narrator, after all Undyne doesn't seem too different from them, on some aspects. Chara idolises Undyne and describes her as the hero who never gives up, and even in genocide she is one of the few monsters who isn't seen just as "free EXP", but rather as a heroine trying to protect the world. Even if in genocide Chara at that point is giving in to the idea that the world needs to be erased, they probably still respect Undyne, even if they may believe that Undyne's determination is misplaced, as she is trying to save a world that, to Chara, deserves to be destroyed.

When you first came to the Underground, you killed. Out of fear. Out of desperation. Out of ignorance. But you, with the limitless power of Reset, came back. You made it right. You saved us. You found the one timeline where you and the monsters both went free.
And for years, it was enough. You used your powers to help us, even after we broke the surface. You were our ambassador. Our savior. Our friend.
Then you went back again.
By the time we understood what had happened, Snowdin was dust. You kept coming, finding the one timeline in which you always won, likely by trial and error. Not that we'd know. You killed us all, the strongest, the weakest, every single on of us.

This has to be one of, if not *THE* saddest death in Undertale. The way that you’re forced to sit there and watch Undyne melt because she’s so determined, yet her body melts on the neutral route because she still believes that there’s some good in you is just so depressing. The way she repeats “I won’t die!”, really kicks you in the feels as well.

I mean, she is throwing SPEARS at you. Thats why, on my first run, thats what I did. And I won. I was happy i had defeated undyne. This song was not a theme of tragedy, but of celebration for me

Midway in watching a blind neutral RUclips playthrough of Undertale, I got the game and played it before any more would be spoiled. I decided to do some things different from the commentator (Vechs) such as sparing Toriel (I couldn't bring myself to kill Papyrus, though Vechs had also spared him). I wondered to myself "Hmmm, what would happen if I killed Undyne?" What happened left me terribly shaken and disgusted with myself.
The biggest lie this game tells you: That monsters don't have Determination.

Andreas The Phoenix have you played the true pacifist route? if not, here's a spoiler: in that route you get into Alphys' secret lab. There you find out, that humans have something, which monster do not: "DETERMINATION" (yes, it's written in all caps). Alphys tries to inject it into some monsters, which causes them to melt and fuse together (Amalgamates). The monsters bodies are not able to handle DETERMINATION. Undyne is the only monster who actually gets DETERMINATION by herself, however it's still to much for her body, which is why it's losing shape

And yeah i think i made a mistake. However that means what the game says is not a lie. Monsters may not have determination, but that doesn't mean they can't create it.
It's implied that Alphys injected determination into Undyne her self, purely out of fear from losing their closest friend.

My heart broke with hers.
This was a very powerful moment in the game for me. I had first killed Toriel because I didn't know you could spare her. Felt bad but thought that maybe bosses could not be spared... but then I could spare Papyrus, so I realized I probably did something wrong for Toriel. But then, Undyne began chasing me around, throwing spears at me... felt like she wanted me dead, unlike Toriel and Papyrus, and that sparing would not be possible.
Still, for the whole battle, I would try to spare her, but the command was never yellow. And then, I dealt the "final blow" and...she refused to die. And that song kicked in. And she said all these things about not giving up, wanting to save her friends.
I realized I messed up. Bad. To the monsters, I was the bad guy, even if I did not want to be. I did not want any of this to happen.
Yet, every round, I was forced to attack her, with no way to spare her. Again and again. And see her slow down more and more, being more desperate... every round, I was like "Please no, don't do this to me, I don't want this, allow me to spare her...PLEASE"
But it was too late. Nothing I could do would save her at this point. I was forced to look at her disappear, desperately trying to hold on to save her people... forced to deal with the consequences of my actions, even if I had no bad intentions. I was defending myself, but could not understand her, her motivations for doing this, and avoid this end. Not until it was way too late. I felt truly horrible. All I could do is finish her off...
I did not kill a single monster after this.
I know I could just have reloaded and tried to spare her, but I felt this would reduce the impact of what just happened. I just swore to figure out how to spare on my next playthrough instead.
Seriously, I did not expect this game to have that kind of emotional impact on me. It really is amazing.

She can’t take out her undying form because you (probably) haven’t killed anyone else. She can’t take out her undying form because it’s the other monsters she cares most about, not herself. When she entered the royal guard, she accepted that an other monsters life was more than hers, and that’s what makes it so sad

In my opinion, the most disturbing part of this fight is "Flower pollen drifts in front of you."
It isn't a line that appears on a pacifist route, only on this specific battle. I wonder what it means...

I think it's as a result of the Echo Flowers in the area, but it's probably symbolic too. My best guess is that it's hearkening back to the wish that some monster made that they could be free and climb the mountain.
Maybe that wish was made by a younger Undyne.

Even if Undyne the Undying would have managed to kill you, she still would have died.
Monsters are not able to handle Determination and since Undyne had this much amount of it, it made her stronger, but the effect wouldn‘t last long and the after effects would melt her like she did in the Neutral run. As the True Lab showed us, Monsters turn into Amalgamates due to a little bit of determination. In Genocide or Neutral, there never is a Happy ending for her off screen.

Seeing this was the most heartbreaking thing I have ever seen. This one scene alone has nothing on the entirety of the No Mercy run.

You just gotta love how this game gives an enemy the dramatic "final stand" music. Normally that's saved for a party member in a JRPG who sacrifices themselves to save you and everyone else.

I'm pretty much an emotionless husk of a human being, but the cutscene of Undyne's death, the repercussions from it all, it was just horrible to think about, so sad...
The genocide ending doesn't really have as much of an impact. She kind of just immediately accepts that she's lost.
In the neutral run, she keeps trying to fight while she slowly dies. And with this music mixed in, it's a lot more impacting.
Yeah.... At least before Undyne the Undying dies, she dies with a smile on her face. However when normal Undyne dies in the Neutral route....it is so heart robbing........at least for me ;-;

And I had the heartbreaking image of a dying Undyne in my mind, which is EXTREMELY sad, because Undyne is in my top three favorite undertale characters.(Sans is first place and Toriel is third)

Basically, you climbed up the mountain for no reason, fell in while invading the monster’s territory, and expected to feel good after killing a hero.
@@datcap6289 Bullshit. It was never clearly stated why Frisk climbed up the mountain. He could’ve done this out of pure curiosity, and then could’ve stumble and fall. So in-game he just tries to find a way out.
Undyne is not a hero. She is a psychotic hypocritical murderer, who clearly enjoys maiming and hurting others, but goes nuts if Frisk kills someone even in self-defense.

god its been a little over a year since this came out and coming back to the soundtrack and listening to it is making me feel all nostalgic and emotional an shit agh,, this game gave off a vibe like no other ,, i havent been really into playing games myself but this is one of the only ones ive played and it has such a beautiful story,, i cant express enough how much i had loved this game, story, characters and just eVERY BIT OF IT
Undyne's Genocide death may be sad, but at least there she goes out a true hero and died knowing she had bought the other monsters time to escape, so her death wasn't completely pointless. Here, she dies desperately clinging to the last bit of determination she has in her, begging death for just a little more time. I can't imagine how humiliated she must've felt being murdered by a child (at least in Genocide it was more excusable to be killed by a mass murderer). I find this as easily one of the saddest deaths in the game (second only to Sans).
