    I think the struggle I face when shopping more quality (pricier) clothing is that it's hard to get out of the mindset of spending a lot of money for ONE piece of clothing. Why should I spend $90 in a blouse when I could use the same amount to get 3 shirts and 2 pants from Urban Behaviour. But I realise what minamilism can teach is to be mindful of the things you buy for yourself. Care for the things you get whether it is clothing or anything else.

      Mango Mint you put my exact problem into words, I just bought one coat for a price I could have bought 5-10 items... and I'm reeling at the price, not because it's low quality (it's totally worth what I paid for it), but because my mind can't believe I brought home one thing instead of 10 haha, I finally took the tag off and wore it today, totally hyperventilating when I did that haha, but I felt good! and it's a classic piece not trendy at all.
      on the other hand, I carefully put it back on the hanger and put it back in my wardrobe when I got home... as opposed to throw it anywhere in my room/floor.😂

    This is great (yay for lowering consumption) but I disagree with the fabric scrunch test for quality because there are cheap, man-made fabrics (like polyester) which are designed not to crease; and quality, natural fabrics (like linen) that will crease like crazy!

      I'd recommend you check out Justine Leconte's channel. I only discovered her back in march i think but her channel is amazing. She's a fashion designer and has SO much knowledge about ethical clothing, sustainable fashion, how to spot good quality and caring for your garments. She did a "caring for your clothes + laundry hacks" video recently that might help you out :)

    As someone who has sewn for years and used to make many of her own clothes, I deeply care about quality of fabric and construction. I also really appreciate that you gently touched upon the ethical implications of fast fashion. What I found most helpful was your fantastic advice on good strategies for finding quality garments. I honestly never thought to look into local designers!

    • @heather-linbrannon8352
      @heather-linbrannon8352 7 лет назад +5

      Rachel's advice is good. You have to experience what quality is in order to recognize it by sight & feel. Anther thing: I quite like many synthetics & blends; I don't discriminate based on fiber.

    • @lisafeldmann9863
      @lisafeldmann9863 7 лет назад +2

      I find that while I like cotton, it can get heavy with knits. Sometimes you have to have blends to get the best out of a fiber. I do like rayon and poly blends for their comfort and wash ability. I have accepted that some of the clothes that I get that are comfortable knits, like modal may not last that long.

      I thrift the majority of my clothes and have found PACT to be the most affordable ethical clothing brand for basics. I've also looked into organic basics but, they're a little out of budget for me. However, I'm willing to try out their bras since the prices are comparable to VS, minus the child labor. I already spurge on bras though since I wear an uncommon size.

  • @OldHagslore

    Although I do very much agree with you in this video I have to address that there are two different people who shop lower priced clothing and there is a a big difference between the two. There are those people like you mentioned who want to have a huge variety of of clothing so that they can have something different every weekend and who follow all the trends and then there are low income people like mothers and children who shop what they can at a fraction of the price. Children grow very fast and need a lot of different clothing like for example snow pants, rain pants, snow boots, rain boots, etc... It is hard to keep up fanatically with fast growing children on a family budget. I feel that the majority of people shopping at stores in my area are these low income families. Where I live there are no second hand shops and even Tradra (the ebay of my country) the prices are similar to stores like H&M. I feel that if quality designers want to reach out to a vaster customer base they need to meet somewhere in the middle by lowering their prices a bit. There is no way a say five person family on one income could purchase shirts for £80 a piece. I know you most likely are not addressing families or low income people in your video but I mention them because they are the ones I believe that are frequently shopping at places like H&M. I myself wear mostly vintage because I like the originality and I like that the clothing is being reused
    .

    Topshop is actually one of the more expensive brands here in Germany - definitely more pricey than H&M and co. Personally if I would have the money I would invest in a few more good quality pieces, however right now for example Topshop is expensive for me.

      It's REALLY expensive abroad, she's out of touch. In the US a 18£ top will literally be $90 and that goes for everything. A good tip is to buy locally, because clothes is pricier when imported and the carbon it takes to ship is bad for the Earth.

  • @rhinoloupe
    @rhinoloupe 7 лет назад +2

    I'd highly recommend second-hand/thrift/charity shops for pre-owned clothing. You can easier gauge the quality of those items because they have already been worn and washed, and you can see how they are holding up. It's perfect if you're on a budget, too.

    I love this video and topic! I recently switched to this style of shopping and building my wardrobe and the difference is amazing. Quality over quantity is definitely the way to go. Not only because you'll be shopping more responsibly, but the items fit so much better and I love wearing them! I've been ranting about how this way of shopping and building a capsule wardrobe is much better to anyone that is listening haha

  • @DrgnMage2536

    I agree that buying one quality piece is better than buying something cheap that will fall apart, wherein you would have to replace it. The clothing item(s) should be sturdy and stylish. I bought a pair of hiking pants that is lightweight, quick dry and still looks good for traveling or out to dinner. I don't have a large wardrobe, but the items I do have, might be slightly more expensive but they do last and fit well.

    good information. I'm almost 54, and have bought mostly classic styles, good quality clothes but for the past 10 years or so have added in a few not so good quality. I have clothes I bought in the 90''s that are still classics and because I took care of them and they are still in style wear them and add some trendy accessories if I want. However in the process and staying the sae size I have alot of clothes. LOL In the process of weeding through them. • @KanashiAtisuto

      Then you are lucky people. My clothes from Zara, New Yorker and H&M are just shit concerning quality. I can't find any clothing store that fits my needs but I resist to buy low quality unethically made clothes so I have to walk around in my cheap quality stuff. With the brands mentioned before the seams are the biggest problem and I feel so bad for having bought them for obvious reasons though I didn't know about all that back then.

    • @13realmusic
      @13realmusic 7 лет назад +15

      Blackmatchalatte So true, it's a hit or miss. There's cheap clothes I have that last forever, so I don't see the need to move up buying tier. My next choice has been thrift shops like the Salvation Army so it's more ethical to purchase these different types of clothes that would otherwise be too expensive.

  • @CaraSarro

    My problem is that my quantity/cheap cloths from, H&M, Forever 21 etc. last me YEARS. I have stuff from at least 5 years ago that is still ok. I don't understand what people are doing to their cloths that they don't last, I never have that issue. With that...I have a lot of cloths because I consider everything still good.

    • @mleeho
      @mleeho 7 лет назад +36

      Cara Sarro Just wearing it often. One of the things I noticed is the more clothes I own, the less each piece is worn, which means it breaks down less quickly. While you keep each item longer, you wear each individual item less, which seems like a waste to many people. Poor quality in a garment is MUCH more visible in people with smaller wardrobes. My partner has only 2 pairs of jeans and 11 t-shirts. I know his jeans are high quality because they've survived nearly 10+ years of daily abuse and are still wearable. However his T-shirts are of varying qualities, and when wearing all of them on a near weekly rotation, the difference is stark. Some T-shirts are only slightly faded and softened after 7+ years of weekly use, but some developed holes within 6 months of purchase.

    • @annadesterke4641
      @annadesterke4641 7 лет назад +14

      I think when people say "it lasts me one wash" they actually mean, "it lasts me one wash and one tumble dry". I never tumble dry clothes and that's why they last longer for me, despite being bought from cheap shops. Some people tumble dry all of their clothes and so they pill very quickly

    • @CaraSarro
      @CaraSarro 7 лет назад +1

      Anna de Sterke mleeho I've never had any of this happen haha so odd! I have a pretty large wardrobe but tend to gravitate twards certain clothing more often than others, usually wearing certain pieces weekly. I tumble dry too, some clothing for years.
      I know my boss for example is crazy about pilling and will toss a shirt if it does it, sometimes after just a few weeks of use, which is pretty wasteful. I never really experience this though.

      So I have to use a laundry mat and I never ruined my clothes until I started going to them. So I’m thinking it might be a matter of old washers? Most my clothes don’t go into the dryer just because they are so delicate

  • @michtown826
    @michtown826 7 лет назад +14

    The problem I have with quality items is that I am very aware of how much I spent, and therefore wont wear it in fear of ruining it. I live in Texas, so it's hot all the time and sometimes quite dusty. I don't hate my wardrobe, but I purposely don't wear the things I love because they could be ruined quickly.

    • @mleeho
      @mleeho 7 лет назад +9

      Maleah Michelle The only way to get over this is to develop the thinking of "I bought this item for the sake of being worn." Clothing is meant to be worn and ruined. It wasn't meant to stay pristine. The money is already gone and the value of that money is wasting away when the item bought is not in use. I know personally, honing this mentality and learning proper clothing care (simple repairs, stain removal, washing and storage) made me more comfortable and proud in wearing my clothes and even seeing their age show. When my clothes do eventually become unwearable, I'm also more grateful they've served me so well.

    Many people do not realise that when they buy clothing made from cheap synthetic fibres such as polyester, polyamides, acrylics etc., they are basically walking around in plastic. This can be a fire hazard first of all. Secondly, each time you wash the clothing, small micro fibres get wash down the drain. All water leads to the sea and rivers. Fish and other species eat these microfibres thinking it's food and the food cycle means that people end up eating their plastic clothing in the long run. For me quality clothing means buying natural fibres such as cotton, linen, silk etc.

    I don't know if I'm the only one with that problem, but feel like it is pretty hard when you want to live crueltyfree (so no leather, wool, fur etc.) but also to have no "unnatural" fabrics.
    I love the look of leather and fur on clothes but I don't want animals to be harmed and I don't want to wear another living beings skin.
    But I also want natural and sustainable fabrics and I feel like this can be pretty tricky unfortunately..

    This has always been my philosophy! But even I have gone into the fast fashion trap at times due to the cheap price in the past. I realise tough that the good quality pieces I felt amazing in as soon as I tried it on I had have for years - sometimes up to 10 years now.
    Another important things when it comes to having a 'minimalist wardrobe' is that you do not compromise just because you want a certain look. For example when I was younger I could have an idea for an outfit/garment in my head. I remember for example looking for a black chunky knitted jumper with a big turtle neck. I could not find anything I wanted but I was so obsessed with the idea and to find it NOW - so I ended up buying one like that at Vero Moda (or something) in acrylic. It just didn't feel great on. It was itchy and pilling like crazy.
    A couple of years later I bought a similar one in better quality and I still have it 7 + years later. So what I am trying to say is to allow yourself to shop slower and with a plan in mind.

    ANOTHER TIP! I've found that in the case of dresses, the lining is a huge sign of quality. Cheap clothing will usually have only a single layer while quality clothing will have a liner AND slip built in. And I can tell you, quality dresses last forever. I have many cheap dresses that have frayed or torn within a year or so, and several quality vintage items from the 50s-80s that look like they were just finished yesterday.

    Rayon is not a synthetic fiber. It is a manufactured fabric made from natural sources (such as wood pulp).
    Also there are many good quality fabrics that wrinkle easily, such as silk, cotton, and linen ( these are things I learned while taking a textiles course in college).

    I’d rather pay more for an item that will last and feels better on me, than something of low price and quality that breaks and wears easily. SHEIN and ROMWE, places like that may seem nice because everything is cheap, but their clothes really are not good at all. Invest your money in something other than fast fashion, your wallet will thank you, because you’re not wasting money on bad clothing and constantly having to replace a clothing item.

      Dianne roy definitely nothing wrong with that! You can find some awesome pieces at thrift stores. And it's so much better for the environment than buying new too 🌏❤️ ☺️

    Idk I feel like there's ups and downs to fast fashion. Yes, all your points were correct but I also feel like it opens up the fashion to the person who could never afford those much pricier pieces. It helps break down some of the elitism which is why fast fashion came about. People who could not get access either started making their own and selling to their peers or going to department stores and high street shops. But then those businesses started to take advantage in their labor and wage a conditions once again isolating but this time the people making the garments with unsustainable fabrics. Its a two edge sword.

      48mavemiss2 true! I think for people who care about buying ethical clothing can still buy fast fashion pieces, if it's with a "mindful" attitude, of choosing pieces that you really love and know you will keep for a while. Which is a very valid option for people who can't afford expensive pieces right now
      It's not ideal, but it's better than mindless consumption of fashion :)

      48mavemiss2 that's what I had to do when I got a corporate job recently- I don't have the money to buy expensive pieces, so I tried to build a capsule wardrobe of Target pieces that went together

    I totally agree with you about quality rather than quantity. I love my clothes that I have had for years and try to look for classics and wear a lot of denim. But I think that fashion and new trends does have a place in the grand scheme of things / economically for business to survive but cannot stand the fast fashion stuff that are poorly made and not great for the people buying into that way of clothes buying too. I think the make up and technology videos would be great. I've switched from cheaper brands to Apple Mac and seriously impressed over quality and am very happy and also tend to treasure my higher priced makeup and perfume rather than the rather throwaway aspect of cheaper drugstore brands.

    most of my clothes were pretty cheap and have lasted me years. i could never justify spending few hundred bucks on a top unless it was spitting out gold. plus i get tired of wearing the same thing over and over again so on the rare occasion my clothes do wear out i like that i can replace it with something fresher. i also really enjoy thrifting and have items that last me s while. i have a trench coat that i wear constantly during winter. it was $86 and is in like new condition going on 7years. honestly, ready for a new one but this one is still great so I'll just keep wearing it

    I love the video and I agree with most of it, just the fact that some fast fashion stores do have quality pieces! for example, I love buying jackets and shoes from Zara, they are usually quite expensive but they are very nice, they last A LOT and never wear out. But with the clothing I'm not very excited.

I have a neighbor who gave me a stack of perfectly good t-shirts and shorts; an Afghanistan war veteran gave me some wonderful t-shirts and aloha shirts. this makes some interesting combos! at present, I'm wearing red tartan shorts and a green aloha shirt. it makes for a lasting impression.:)

    When I shop I try to only let myself buy things I know I've been needing. Ill avoid other sections all together as I used to shop about 3+ days a week at different malls.... Like right now I am only letting myself buy high waist shorts & jeans because I've wanted them for a while and only have 1 pair each. Its taking a long time to find my perfect pair though.... I also let myself buy some new gym items since I just re joined a gym. Or her than that I'm trying to get rid of more.
