      Well said. They should be banned near school environments, or altogether, but sadly that will never happen. They are proven over and over again to be more dangerous than an equivalent estate or saloon, both for pedestrians and bike riders (high bumpers hit at chest height, poor visibility, poor handling in avoidance situations etc.) and for the occupants. But they're in vogue so of course every car maker has 16 different models and people can't buy them fast enough. We need, sadly, a few more deaths at the hands of SUV drivers before anyone in government sits up and legislates, as happened in the Netherlands in the 60s after a spate of child deaths at the hands of motor vehicle drivers. They were brave enough to kick cars out and focus on active travel. Look how great their cities are now, not perfect but paragons of calm, health, happiness and safety.

    There are only four ways someone can loose control of a vehicle like that:
    1. Medical incident; such as fainting or heart attack, for example.
    Possible solution: cars, like trains, could have a "deadman's" switch or similar, something that cuts drive and implements controlled braking.
    2. Distracted by mobile phone or other passengers in some way to cause a slip of foot onto the accelerator. Even so, good reflexes and ability to properly control powerful heavy vehicle will be necessary - many drivers won't have those skills.
    Possible solution: more rigorous and frequent testing of drivers who own high-powered heavy cars - these type of cars can become dangerous, lethal weapons.
    3. Driving at excessive speed and lack of self-control, then a tight bend or sudden obstruction leads to a sudden reaction to change direction and/or speed - this can easily tip the vehicle and cause the driver to lose control.
    Possible solution: minimum manslaughter charges and maximum sentencing to send a strong message. We'll end up with vehicle "black boxes" at some point.
    4. Driver under the influence of drink, drugs or powerful medication that affects judgement, behaviour and reflexes.
    Solution: don't drive in those conditions. There are plenty of taxis, Uber cars etc. Don't take the risk.
    What can schools do? Perhaps raised bollards can stop impact reaching vulnerable children and staff. These are seen in many places to protect entrancs to banks and government buildings against deliberating ramming by a vehicle.

    • @datcheesecakeboi6745
      @datcheesecakeboi6745 Год назад +1

      its most likely number one, but you forget to mention that sometimes vehicles break, like breaks not working, also most schools just have metal fences surronding with extra ones in front of the gates to make it safer for children, if it was through a gate it would of been stopped, but a metal fence is not stopping a out of control range rover

    • @markdonovan1540
      @markdonovan1540 Год назад +1

      @@datcheesecakeboi6745 good point, brake failure can happen, but they would still be able to steer. If steering fails and locks, the driver should still be able to brake. If driver is going too fast to react and control such a situation, then that's down to them.
      Personally, many of these type of vehicles, and modern cars in general, can give a driver a false sense of security, at best. At worst, they can give a driver a sense of domineering power and that can lead to all kinds of unpleasant situations. There are so many safety features to protect the driver and passengers, but so few to protect people on the outside of the vehicle. Car manufacturers sell cars to drivers who want more power and comfort and safety for themselves. Excess speed is still the most significant factor in fatalities, but the approach to control speed is via Radar Cameras, points and fines. Maybe this is the wrong approach, it certainly doesn't prevent speeding from happening. I've been fined lots of times for speeding, and lost my license twice! So it obviously didn't work for me. I am more cautious these days and it amazes me how many proper maniacs there are behind the wheel, yet there is hardly ever a speed camera or traffic cop in sight.

    I can't help but think if they've been driving a little Renault Clio it wouldn't have been as bad.
    But no, you've got to keep up with the kardashians by having the world's biggest jeep in the middle London. Resulting eventually in the death of a innocent little girl. Well done. At least Victoria Beckham thinks you have the right car. Honestly.

    How long until people realize that SUV's should be banned in cities? There is absolutely no reason why anyone would need a 4x4 monster like this to get around on paved roads, but they are increasingly picked by bad and reckless drivers as a supposedly safer choice. In reality sitting so high up makes situational awareness and maneuverability even worse, so they are much more likely to get into accidents and kill and injure people with these monstrosities. I can hardly believe no one is saying this when 10 people were hospitalized and a child even died because an off-road vehicle misuse like this. This is so senseless and could be easily avoided with better regulation on SUVs to be used where actually appropriate.

      Folks buy them for two main reasons. The elevated driving position means they feel superior to the poor people in smaller vehicles and their large size means they have a dominating effect on the road, ie the 'get out of my way' effect

    The sentences for causing death by dangerous driving are absolutely ridiculous. Hopefully justice is served, but I seriously doubt the parents will end up feeling like it has been when the driver of the range rover only receives a few years custodial sentence. They need to increase the sentences. Rip to the little girl man, this is heartbreaking.

    • @obtuse1291
      @obtuse1291 Год назад

      Even a few years custodial is very rare. Most of these dangerous or careless "accidents" seem to get off with a paltry slap on the wrist.
      The fact that when driving you are in control (or are supposed to be) of a two ton killing machine seems to get overlooked.
      Compare that with police shooting and killing people who were thought to have a gun (and who didn't).
      Time we upped the ante on dangerous driving.

      @@moggpiano8043 OK so if that's the case then let's give the perpetrator a week in prison and see how irrelevant the sentence is then. Matter of fact, if sentences are so irrelevant then let's just abolish prisons as a whole, just because the prison sentence won't undo the crimes that have already been committed. Nobody said it would save the childs life lol, but if that was my child then I'd like to see the perpetrator locked away for a very long time as opposed to the lenient sentences handed out to people convicted of death by dangerous driving.
