I saw Monsune in concert on march 11 2020. I was at work that day and they told us not to come back in because of covid. We end up not going to work for months. During the concert I was nervous because it was brand new in the news, scared about covid, and of course nobody knew about masks. But it was amazing night. Look back at that and man was I lucky. Crowded room, no masks, in the middle of nyc the most infected city in the world at the time. Glad that it was the last concert I went to before there were no more concerts.

I’m coming back a few years later to say I didn’t realize this used a sample from Dorothy Ashby’s “By The Time I Get To Phoenix” (1969)! This song is an outstanding mix and a fresh take using the original harp sample, but it’s great to hear the source material for the harp as well! Two great songs!!

Samples are used for the purpose of recreating an idea, or improving/expanding upon a pre-existing idea. For example, the harp, trumpets, and the majority of the backing track on this song come from about three or four different songs, that were blended together, pitched up or down, scratched/edited, and fastened together to make a new song. Then Monsune puts his beautiful vocals on top and brings this then creation together! It’s quite awesome!
