Mugs you did great on this. It is a very deep song. I follow Ren and know the story of Joe, one of his closest friends. He jumped off a bridge and they never found his body. As for "How to Be Me," Ren's best friend, Joe Hughes, committed suicide on the 27th of December, 2010 by jumping off the Menai Bridge, a large suspension bridge connecting the mainland to the Isle of Anglesey where Ren and Joe lived. Ren alluded to it in one of his songs, stating that he lost his best friend before he was 25. The pain of this loss is evident in a few of his songs, "Freckled Angels" being one example. It is dedicated to Joe Hughes. Some people have claimed that the video was shot at the bridge that Ren's friend jumped from, however, that is misinformation according to some Brighton residents.
Ren recently posted some background on his relationship with Joe and the tragic suicide. Ren explained that he got a call from his friend Ella around 3 am saying that Joe was the Menai Bridge, He’d been on the phone with her in tears saying goodbye. He told her to tell everyone he loved them. Ren went out on foot attempting to get to Joe while trying to reach him on the phone. Just minutes before Ren got to the bridge, his friend's cell phone went out of service. The Coast Guard started a search to no avail. Ren, friends, and volunteers unsuccessfully searched the shoreline for ten days; Joe’s body was never recovered.
Ren’s and Chinchilla’s live performance of "Chalk Outlines" is still my favorite song, partly because I can relate to it more given my daily struggles. Although, losing one’s best friend to suicide is also something I experienced when I was 19 y/o (almost 38 years ago). “How to Be Me” definitely runs a close second, though. I would recommend you check out their busking sessions in Brighton, performing “Sexual Healing” (Marvin Gaye cover) and “One Dance / Drunk In Love” (Drake/Beyoncé cover); those performances are of a much lighter mood and very enjoyable.
I hope you will continue to dive into Ren's and Chinchilla's catalogs.

To this day, and on the upcoming Sick Boi Album release, Ren will go into a deeper additional couple of minutes to say the words he was at a loss for years ago.
This is why I love this man’s music, and also why I care for him like millions of others. The bloke is so F’n relatable to anyone who gives him a reasonable listen.
I had a friend when I was young who left our world at 16 because he couldn’t stay in this one. I loved him and I’ve had friends i served with in the military that I’ve lost to this insidious pathway, and so many I never gave a proper “I love you” with a true meaning, instead of a Pat on the back “love you dude”.

That last part is not true. It's a myth that has been spreading, but this song is recorded on a rooftop/balcony in Brighton, England. His friend jumped from a bridge in Wales.
I understand that people want this to be true since it adds even more emotions, but in my opinion it is not needed. This performance is emotional enough in itself.

You’re awesome! It’s not easy to interpret that video without context. The devastating suicide of his best friend years ago, in fact he made a post around June 2 either acknowledging the anniversary of his suicide or his birthday. He explains how his friend was freckled and funny and goofy and brought him so much joy. I think this song is about what happens to those left behind after a suicide. I had a professor once say that your world doesn’t “change” when someone you love dies…they “take” the whole world you knew with them. I think REN couldn’t get his bearings when his friend jumped off the bridge they played on. He missed getting to him by 2 minutes. Try to find his post. You’re doing a great job and I love your humility to admit when you don’t feel like you’re able to do a complete analysis. I love watching you. Here I am a 55 year old woman. But, you have a true fan in me.

Appreciate your thoughtfulness and your appreciation of the beauty of the sounds...there's another interpretation of "How to be Me" which I think is underlined in the lyrics... "I forgot how to be me." The idea of 'put yourself in my shoes' shows confidence, and that's entirely missing when you forget what to do. To me, this song is an expression of deep grief... mind a blur, a blank, forgetting every detail of how you normally - used to - function. That tracks with the ending and the decision to film this on the bridge where Joe died.

I've never heard a better description of grief than this song. They fucking nailed it, it's so haunting and beautiful and sad, but allows us to experience a manageable level of grief.

In my opinion his friend is telling you he is going through but ASKING how to be me (the old me who is lost). Struggling terrible with thoughts and life in the current form of himself... It's how the living see the dearly departed everywhere, through the walls, and the floors, and the halls. Over and over again asking themselves what they could have said or done differently afraid to be themselves because they blame themselves to the point where they forget how to be themselves. Haunted

Ever notice how you act differently around different people? Some people bring out dimensions of your personality that others don't. Maybe there's a version of you that only comes out when you're with your old mates from school and is otherwise silent.
Now imagine you're really close to someone, spend practically all your time together, and then in an instant they're gone. The person who brought out the "you" in you is no more.
That's what Ren is dealing with in this song.
I think you’re being very hard on yourself for struggling to get your head round this song and it’s deeper meaning. Unless you know Ren’s background you couldn’t possibly know. Ten went to school with my daughter and as previous comments have mentioned he was running to stop his best friend from committing suicide but arrived just too late. Joe Hughes had jumped off the Menai Suspension Bridge which joins the Isle of Anglesey to mainland Wales 🏴. All you need to do is listen to the end of how to be me to feel even now how much it has affected him. He has other songs dedicated to Joe which you’ll no doubt react to at some point. Ren also has his own well documented health issues to contend with also which is where how to be me speaks of his mental health fog. I love your analysis and interpretations of his music.
