Thanks for a clear, concise comparison of Aero and Rise gardens. I have two Harvests and a Harvest XL and am looking to go bigger. The one point of comparison that is missing is price. As of 7/14/24, the Aero Farm 12 is US$349, the farm 12xl is Us$449, and the farm 24 basic is US$449. The Rise base model is considerably more at US$ 799. Yes, there are more planting holes (up to 36) but they cannot all be used and the light height is fixed and less than the farm 12 or 12xl. Thanks again for the great reviews.
I am looking for a classroom garden, so I need one that doesn’t take up too much room but could grow a variety of plants. I have been binging your content! Keep up the very informative videos, they are great!
Thanks so much Whitney! Love that you are looking for one for your classroom! The sooner we get kids involved with growing food the better. I am thinking about going to the local junior and high school to see if I can set up a little lunch or after school program! It is so rewarding to see kids eat something they helped grow. Your students are very lucky!
Best video on the topic I have ever seen. I have 2 of the AeroGarden Harvest and experience a lot of the frustrations you highlighted. I too am an heirloom snob. I do use seeds from Johnny's Selected Seeds in Maine, as well as Bakers Creek. I wish AeroGarden would improve their design and innovation, as they do have excellent customer service. Easy disassembly to clean and sanitize is a huge opportunity for both companies.
Thank you so much for the details on the comparisons of the two units. You are saving many people a lot of time and money. This is so informative and helpful.
Thanks so much Sandy! I love growing food and helping other to do the same. Finding the “right” unit is a personal thing., I just want to be able to share my experiences and hopefully give people the info they need. Happy growing!
So glad I came across your video! I was ready to pull out my credit card for an AeroGarden but had no idea about the Rise Garden brand! They clearly BLOW AeroGarden out of the water for almost everything! Amazing video.
I just received the Rise garden base model (still in the box!) and your video has increased my excitement! Thank you! I am going to be watching more of your videos working with Rise. :-)
Awe thanks so much! That made me smile and I was having a bad day so it’s greatly appreciated. If you have any questions let me know and I’ll do my best to answer them!

I so glad the video was helpful and I totally agree about having both! They serve a bit different purposes but if I was going to get another one it would be another Rise! If you do go with the rise make sure to use my link to save yourself $50 on any of the family gardens! What are you most excited to start growing hydroponically?
They are both great systems, it really just comes down to personal preference. If I had to recommend only one it would be the Rise but I still have my eye on the AeroGarden 12XL!
I absolutely love your videos :) Thank you for the comparison. I was hesitating between the Farm and the Rise but seing the comparison confirmed that the Rise was the one for me. Thanks again 😊
I love your videos! To answer your question about the water meters, the new units don't come with them. Rise mentioned why in a video, summing up that it should be a personal choice mostly because they need to be calibrated and if they break or go off calibration they can mess up your readings. I personally love having a meter but I think they're trying to encourage use of the app. I currently only use a meter and don't rely on the app at all but I do like it for the plant organization visual in the nurseries and garden itself.
Good to know, thanks for the info! I love the control of using the meter and being able to keep an eye on the pH as it's so important when growing hydroponically. Any time I have had an issue it has damn near always been because my pH was trending off.
I am looking into upgrading into one of these, probably the RISE, and have no experience with them. I have extensive experience with planted aquariums though and based on that will say that the small pumps in the aerogardens are junk and the larger one in the Rise is will likely last much longer. You can also replace it with aquarium or pond pumps for better prefilters, variable speed, overheat and run dry circuit protection, etc. Great comparison, I am glad to have found it. The last category should have been price though. RISE is a good bit more and the monthly plan thing is a little off-putting.
I have been stressed out and waffling with this decision, and just like that, it's suddenly clear! 😂 You are the real MVP! Seriously! Thanks so much for such a thorough review.
for hydroponics everyone should be using hydroguard. It keeps algea and root root from occuring. As well as keeping resivor slime down to almost nothing. Remember the hotter the resivor the greater the chance of bad things happening. You should install an air stone in the res to keep it aerated as that also helps keep things running smoothly. Amazing! I see on their website they offer a “hydro trio” so I’m definitely curious. I’m a newbie so I’m still just sticking with the aero nutrients until they run out to get my legs underneath me. I did get the 12XL Farm in their closing sale so I have two of those now - grateful you actually liked that version lol

Hi. I am enjoying your videos very much. Like you I have a lot of gardening experience and live in a cold climate. After a house fire I am looking for a large system to replace a bunch of aerogardens and salad boxes. Your views often match mine so I am wondering whether you have evaluated one of the systems under consideration, the iHarvest.
I made my own hydroponics system with window planters $12, 3w fountain pump $4, styrofoam $6, and a full spectrum led light with clip I bought at Walmart for under $20. With a grand total of $45ish and can grow up to 22 pods. Works amazingly well.
I have a container garden outside with quite a lot of variety but I live in south Florida and can only grow lettuces for a few months during winter so I’m really looking in to the rise system for the too hot summer months
You have the reverse problem to me! I love it for growing during the winter when it is too cold outside! With the crazy rising prices on lettuce and everything else it’s a great option! Happy to answer any questions you may have
@@The_IndoorGardener that’s why I started gardening because I have a family of 6 and the grocery bill just keep rising and rising. I’m just trying to figure out if the cost is worth it for me. My husband eats several salads a day so I’m trying to find a way to grow lettuce for him that doesn’t break the bank. Do you find that the cost offsets the produce you’re able to grow? Im also a seed fanatic and have a ton of seeds from baker creek and I’d want to use my seeds to cut down on some expense
@@Shivermetimbers90 I think it’s worth it. I am planning a video for next year showing how much I grow over a year and how much I save…but it won’t be up until the end of next year LOL But I would always have one, even to just grow lettuce and herbs it saves money. I am a HUGE Baker Creek seed junkie and I use mostly my own seeds in the Rise Garden, I stock up on their seedless pods.
Great video, I have been checking online at various systems to surprise my wife. I have narrowed it down to the Rise Garden System ( which is the system she has been considering). But the other one I have come across is the Just Vertical Avea system, which I think looks really nice and is very comparable to the rise system. I do believe they are a Canadian company, which is good. I was wondering if you have any knowledge or experience with the Just Vertical system?
I have looked at the Just Vertical and I loved that they are out of U of T (where I went back in the day). But I do prefer the Rise Garden as it has a flat planting base. Personally I don’t like the planting on the angle vertically. BUT I haven’t tried the Avea or Eve so my objections are purely theoretical
Which do you think has better tasting vegetables/herbs? I have had very mixed results in terms of taste with my aerogarden Farm XL? I have had bitter tasting tomatoes, lettuce and peppers. I have only had success with herbs. I am thinking about gettin a rise garden but do not want to have the same issue. Do you have any thoughts?
Excellent review thank you for sharing! Trying to decide on my 1st garden. Have you see the Garden? Or other vertical gardens? If so what made you go with these options? 😊
Hi Ashley, The Gardyn is not available to me in Canada so I haven't tried that one. The AeroGarden Farm Plus was my first one mostly because I don't think Rise existed back then and Aerogarden was the most well known at that time (at least to me). I truly believe the Rise Garden gives the best use of space and allows for growing the most food. I don't love the tower style, full disclaimer this is a conceptual dislike as I haven't tried them, due to plants leaning. I just find the Rise with the plant supports or even the Aerogarden Farm with the flat base works best in my opinion. Hope that's helpful. If you do end up going with the Rise, don't forget to use my link to save $50. Let me know what one you end up going with. If you do get the Gardyn, I would love to know what you think after you try it for a bit.
@@The_IndoorGardener thanks so much! Still in research mode right now but that does make since about them leaning. Thanks! I like the rises atheists which is one reason I like the gardyn seems like it would be more difficult to get to plants in the back of the rise with it being against the wall. Will let you know once I decide :) new to you channel :) thanks for the info!
@ashleymcdaniel6188 if you have not bought yet, realize that The Rise need not go flat against the wall. Mine is sitting with the short side about two foot into the room in my entry foyer.
Hey! Thank you so much for your videos, it helps a lot! I'm thinking of buying the Personal Rise Garden, but I want to plant 12 lettuces at the same time. Do you think it is possible? In the website they say that we can buy an upgrade that turns the 8 pods into 12 pods. Do you know how this upgrade works ? Because the design of the Personal side is very different from the others. Is this upgrade goes above the box or on the side? I'm very confused about it. I don't know where the upgrade is to be placed and I don't know if, once installed, It really grows 12 lettuces at the same time.
Hi Cristiane, My apologies, I missed your comment! The personal Rise Garden is much smaller but anything is possible. personally I don't think I would grow 12 in there at the same time but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try it! I would suggest that you would need to be on top of pruning and if I was doing it I would be harvesting the outer leaves of all the lettuces to help reduce crowding. Having a fan would be very beneficial to help with air circulation. If it did start to get out of control you could always (carefully) remove a few of the lettuce and transfer them to either a kratky jar or to soil! So there is nothing to lose!!! The "upgrade" you mention I am assuming is the grow deck. It just fits on top so you would just lift off the one it comes with and put the one with 12 holes on instead. They're super easy to switch out! I really hope that helps!
Hi Ronald, I haven't really so far. I did pick up some rockwool I wanted to try in the Rise Garden. I know other people have had good luck with the rapid rooters too.
Could you possibly comment on the noise levels …I would set up the unit in my office and was wondering how often the pump runs and how noisy it is. I currently have a little aerogarden slim and pump noise is very minimal but I figure with the bigger system it will be worse
Hi Chantal, Mine is actually in my office and it doesn’t bother me. I am on calls pretty much all day and it’s never been an issue for me. The only time I find any of the hydroponic systems “loud” is when they are getting a bit low and you hear the dripping water. Hope that helps!
My work laptop is louder than the AG farm behind me, so I totally agree here. :) If I can hear it, it's because it needs attention (feed me water!), so I don't begrudge it some noise there. ;)
Thank you for the video. I was wondering if you have any opinion to share about the click and grow smart gardens. Their pods are way more expensive than aero but this all what we would need
I don’t yet but I ordered one of the new Click & Grow 25 and I am just waiting for it to arrive. Once I do I’ll start doing some videos on it as well, so stay tuned!!!
So I think I made a mistake yesterday when I set up my new Farm24XL. It came with 24 seed pods, and I put all of them in my garden. Since some of these were cherry tomatoes and jalapenos, should I have not used all the holes? And, since it has been a day, do I just leave them alone or can I pull some out now. Will I have ruined the pods if I take a few out today to give the tomatoes and peppers more room?
Hi Hilary, If it were me I would pull some out and let them dry completely. If it was just yesterday you should be ok. Worst case the seeds are toast but you can still use the pods again and put new seeds in. But I think you will be ok. Other option is to let them all grow and then move some to soil. More room will be better for the plants in the long run. I’m super jelly you got the XL! For reference I usually only do 2 max on one side if I am doing peppers or tomatoes
@@The_IndoorGardener Thanks for the answer! I'm kinda disappointed the instructions that came with the 12 pod tomato/pepper seed kit didn't explain that, nor did it come with any blanks to cover the empty seed pod holes. I will see what I can figure out, maybe I can find some golf balls as you mentioned.
@@hilaryblalock6868 Yeah it is frustrating, especially for newbies. I mean if you order something with 24 holes and they give you 24 pods why would you think you wouldn’t;t be well served to plant them all :( Golf balls will definitely work and AeroGarden does make hole covers too (amzn.to/3PU5IkE) but if you already have the golf balls then use them!
Now's a great time to check out semi hydro options. ;) That's what I did because I just wanted to start all the things. Good thing is the grow lights cast enough to the sides that you can totally put your kratky or self-watering pots next to it to reap the benefit. Semi hydro allows you to put your hydroponic nutrients to good use as well. Leca and pon (homemade, lechuza, or otherwise) are both great choices in pots and because your plants will already have water roots, they'll transplant easily!
I’ve tried Aerogardens and it’s ok for small amounts of food but if you’re looking to have a large amount TowerGarden is the way to go. I really hate to see people spend so much on an Aerogarden farm when I know for a little more they could have a TowerGarden with a significantly higher yield. I still use my Aerogardens for herbs & lettuce so it’s not a complete waste of money.
It's not just you. Who ever though it was a good idea to measure out liquid into a cap should be shot. I hated that aspect of it and was glad when I switched over to mixing up my own stock solution. We also opted to buy a bunch of clearance bounties, sprouts, and harvests and have them set up in a room. Each unit will have a few plants but I have lots of units so I can grow many plants. Makes for a great winter garden right now.
@@The_IndoorGardener I'm using a powdered master blend that I mix up to a concentrated stock so I can use it like the Aerogarden nutrients. I have a video on how I do it. Everything seems to be growing fine, I do weekly updates on all of the growth.
Have you dealt with Rise Gardens customer service? I have an Aerogarden Farm 24 XL and so far their customer service has been really great. But for Rise Gardens, I’ve heard bad things about their customer service. I really want a Rise Garden, I love their innovation and the app. Have you had issues with their customer service?
Just so you know, the reason why there is no mention about ph balancing in the Aerogarden is because their all-in-one plant food also act as a ph buffer so you would usually don't need to worry about it. I've heard that some people that have a Rise Garden are using the Aerogarden plant food with it...
pH is a finicking thing, even with a buffer it is always good to monitor your water pH. It can change quickly and then your plants can become susceptible to pests and diseases. I'll be doing some upcoming videos on pH and testing out how it can change using my AeroGarden Sprouts so it will be interesting to see what happens.
Thanks for all the informative videos. Now that you had more time with the Rise. I’m curious if you still feel the same way now after 8 or so months. Seems like water will travel more in the Rise, did you notice if this was better or worse for algae? Any leaks? I think i like it better but it’s a decent size investment 😄$
Hi Frank, I still love it, no leaks and no issues! You can save $50 with my link in the description 😉 I’m planning an getting a second one so that I can grow even more.
The Rise Garden is definitely more, plus it's personal preference. We never really got the good AeroGarden deals in Canada. Plus now they don't even ship here anymore :(

This is a fantastic video.
Thanks!
Where do you find the 2 tier rise garden system??
So could you use the plant food from one on the other?
Are the pre-seeded pods for the Rise Garden guaranteed if they don't germinate, as they are with the AG?
Hi Mary, As I mostly use the seedless pods I am not sure, but I will find out for you! Stay tuned…
How often do you clean?
I really hope that helps!
have you used any of the vertical hydroponic systems? or aeroponic systems?
any concerns cncer causing chemicals coming out of the components?
Have you tried any of the knock off grow anything sets?
What about replacement parts like lights and things?
Wondering if you put in consideration the vacation mode?
No I didn’t but that is a good point! Thanks for pointing that out
I’ve tried Aerogardens and it’s ok for small amounts of food but if you’re looking to have a large amount TowerGarden is the way to go. I really hate to see people spend so much on an Aerogarden farm when I know for a little more they could have a TowerGarden with a significantly higher yield. I still use my Aerogardens for herbs & lettuce so it’s not a complete waste of money.
I've only really seen these used for clones...kinda cool
It's not just you. Who ever though it was a good idea to measure out liquid into a cap should be shot. I hated that aspect of it and was glad when I switched over to mixing up my own stock solution. We also opted to buy a bunch of clearance bounties, sprouts, and harvests and have them set up in a room. Each unit will have a few plants but I have lots of units so I can grow many plants. Makes for a great winter garden right now.
Wow, that’s cool you make your own nutrient solution! I haven’t tried that yet
@@The_IndoorGardener I'm using a powdered master blend that I mix up to a concentrated stock so I can use it like the Aerogarden nutrients. I have a video on how I do it. Everything seems to be growing fine, I do weekly updates on all of the growth.
@@theaerogardenhomestead Cool I will check it out for sure.
Herbs and some lettuces you can max out the AG, but, no, not peppers or tomatoes.
Unfortunately, the one level Rise garden is $200 more than the Aerogarden Farm 24Plus. Also, AeroGarden frequently has significant sales.
The Rise Garden is definitely more, plus it's personal preference. We never really got the good AeroGarden deals in Canada. Plus now they don't even ship here anymore :(
Hi there! I live in Canada and am looking into buying the Rise garden.
Did you buy it in Canada or order it from the US.
Thanks , I love your videos.😊
A fellow Cannuck! Hi Elizabeth…honestly it’s been so long. I can’t remember if they had the Canadian site when I ordered. I do have a code that should save you $50 on the family models. But they have the Canadian site now so I would order from there
Best advice is if youre going to go that big, then dont get either.
get a tent and a proper led light.
i have 2 AGs and 2 tents, just me.
grow weed
What is real funkcion of pump" in ,for example, "aerogarden"(not "aerog. farm") ?
The pump is there to help circulate the water and nutrients through the system.
@@The_IndoorGardener ok, thanks! 🙂🐞
