Regarding the Penix pick, PFF and this comment section is 100x more nuanced and measured than the rest of the internet.

Understanding and agreeing or thinking it made sense are different things.
Those are definitely the two schools of thought for Tennessee’s draft strategy. I think they made the right choice going Latham at 7. He played LT in high school, and Bill Callahan has a successful track record of helping tackles make that switch.
Falcons taking a QB that early is crazy. But the only thing missing from this conversation is that cousins is coming off an Achilles tear. There is a non-zero possibility that he comes in and he’s not the same guy anymore
Then don't sign him to a $100m guaranteed contract...

@@TheMattTrakker every free agent signing comes with a degree of risk. Coming off injury means there is more risk. Taking a QB gives them a plan B in case it doesn’t work out, or if he gets injured, like Rodgers did last year. And worst case, when cousins leaves in 2 years, they have a young QB who’s learned under an experienced vet who’s careful with the football. Not a bad person to learn from
Regarding the Falcons’ draft, I think the Penix pick is perfectly logical-it’s the trade up for Orhorhoro that’s egregious given 1) the capital surrendered and 2) Newton was still on the board
You fail to consider how much fun it is to say Ruke Orhorhoro. I think in terms of name value alone the Falcons actually got a steal there

Just here for the Jags analysis. About what I expected. It’s a Baalke draft after all, but with a heavy focus on shortcomings. Really like that you focused on the kicker in a positive light and the quick“Jerrian Jones is pretty good”. So thanks for that I guess.
Maason Smith has an RAS of 8.47. Pretty good yea. 81st percentile vertical. 80th percentile 40 yard dash. Jordan Jefferson is 6’3’’ 313 lbs had 34 bench press reps which is 94th percentile and had good explosion numbers with an 81st percentile vertical.
Saying that people who don't like the Pennix pick hate Pennix is reductive. One of the big advantages of the rookie QB is the salary cap advantages and Cousins takes away 3 years of that advantage. Also, the sit and develop model has worked with young, green QBs. Pennix has been at College for 6 years- is his development going to be as marked? Add to that the fear over losing the pick is a direct result of what they did to pursue Cousins and I think it's fair to say that there are some process issues separate to any player concerns.
I appreciate content that doesn't pander to short attention spans with black or white hot takes.
These guys lay out several scenarios for how the Penix situation can go, explain all the factors at play, and leave it up to the imagination.
Nobody knows what the future holds, but understanding the variables can lead to more accurate predictions.
I still don't have a great grade for the Falcons because of their massively overpriced 2nd round DT. But they did achieve what most people expected them to and added to their pass rush with 3 guys that have good upside.
They also misunderstand the player board vs. the draft board, and believe we all secretly just don't like Penix.
Love the rugby talk! Latu played eh?! Awesome. A rugby playing Jaelan Phillips type sounds damn nice. Add in Zammit and Sam will have plenty of rugby talk opportunities for years to come.
My take on the Atlanta QB room is this: on the surface, it makes sense for the Falcons to draft a QB because Cousins is older and coming off a major injury. But not only were they reaching for Penix at 8, he's already 24 and has enough college experience that you'd feel comfortable starting him right away. The Falcons' front office, though, felt confident enough in Cousins that they don't think they'll be able to pick high enough to select his replacement while he's the starter, meaning Penix is unlikely to get meaningful snaps until he's at least 26. I would much rather the Falcons have done what the Chiefs did with Patrick Mahomes and trade up to get a younger QB once their veteran has lived out most of his usefulness on the roster, waiting until 2026 to go after him and picking the best defensive player on the board instead at 8 in 2024. If they really wanted a quarterback _this year,_ they should've taken a younger, more raw prospect that would actually need to sit and develop.
As a side note, Atlanta's front office is not lent credence by _also_ both reaching on their second-round selection and then selecting two insurance policies for him before targeting any other position. This is a rare instance where Matt Verderame (last syllable sounds like "ram," by the way) doesn't know what the hell he's talking about, corroborated by the opinion of pretty much anyone else you ask on the Falcons' draft.
Jefferson reminds me of BJ Hill. Same type of upper body strength.

You know some people took issue with Devondre Sweats weight. He is 6’5’’ 366 lbs. about 20-25 years ago there was a DT that was drafted by the Panthers named Kris Jenkins. Yes the father of recent Bengals DT of the same name. Now Kris Jenkins Sr was 6’5’’ 360 lbs. and he was a 3 time All Pro and a 4 time Pro Bowler. Am I saying Sweat is like Jenkins? No. Could he be as good as Jenkins? Yes of

Over for not using his blinker. He had a few to many and he was honest with the cop who pulled him over. I got a DWI once in 1999. It’s serious. It it’s a misdemeanor. All those other guys commited felonies plural. Yes Watson did commit felonies I have no idea why he was never arrested and charged. You would have to ask the Harris county DA why they didn’t pursue charges. My opinion is the women he assaulted didn’t have money status or power. If they did Watson would have been charged in a New York minute.

Trent Brown and Orlando Brown have played both sides equally well. Orlando was a Pro Bowler
At right and left tackle. Jonah Williams played RT as a freshman the left for sophomore and junior years. Played left for 3 years and RT last year. He was about the same at both sides. Barely average. Below average really in 22 and 23. In 20 and 21 especially he was above average. Riley Reiff was a career LT who played RT for the Bengals in 2021. Lael Collins in college played every position accept center but was a LT his junior year got to Dallas played guard for a year or 2 and then RT the rest of his career.

Arthur Blank didn’t look like he signed off to me considering the pick needed so much explanation to him by Terry. Not to mention the body language from Mr. Blank who knows he is on TV and he is smart enough to know how to play it off in front of the cameras.
Steve and Sam are good examples of how an alpha can get along with a beta as each is comfortable in their role of dominator/dominated. A sigma however can never get along with a beta

I’ve just got a problem with Alabama tackle period. Jonah Williams was incredibly average to below average. Jedrick Wills is about the same as Jonah. Evan Neil after 2 years is a straight up BUST. Oklahoma puts out some good tackles. In 2025 there will be 2 1st round tackles coming out of LSU. Georgia puts out some good tackles.
There is one reason I wouldn’t have drafted Latham. He didn’t test. At all. He had his measuments taken and didn’t do any testing. Neither did Jackson Carman neither did Billy Price in 2018. Now if someone doesn’t

Hey Sam why don’t you like Brian Thomas Jr?? Chris Simms had him as WR2 in this class. Worried that he is a one season wonder? So was Jamar Chase!!! Thomas runs 4.33!! He had close to 1200 yards and 17 tds last year! That’s the most TDs in the FBS!! You worried about his route running? That can be taught dude. You know what can’t be taught? 4.33 speed at 6’3’’ 209 lbs. that you cannot teach. He only needed to run 3 routes at LSU. It’s not that Thomas can be the number 1 either the Jags. HE IS THE 1 for the Jags now. He is WR1 and Kirk is the number 2. Maason Smith was the number 1 recruit and the number 2 DT nationally. As a freshman he was named Freshamn All SEC and Freshman All American. He was 17-18 years only. He had 18 tackles and 4 sacks his true freshman season. 2nd season years his acl on the second play of game 1 against Florida State. He ran over a Florida State guard to make a tackle for a loss in the backfield and is celebrating BOOM tears his ACL. So last year he played and started all the games but didn’t look as explosive as he was because he was still recovering from the ACL. But he still had 27 tackles and 4.5 sacks. He dealt with double teams all year. LSUs defense last year was bad. The players weren’t bad but the DC was an idiot. If Smith had stayed in school and show what he was about to show in year 2 to everyone I have 0 doudt that he would have been a top 15 picks and would have had 9-11 sacks in the year. He was still recovering last year. I don’t know as much about Jordan Jefferson because he played for West Virginia for most of his career and was at LSU just last year. He is a nose tackle with good size. 6’4’’ 320 lbs. and Smith is 6’5’’ 315. And Smith had 4.5 sacks last year not 3. I don’t know where you get your stats. 4 sacks his freshman year and 4.5 last year.
But playing Latham at LT. Ould be tricky because some guys for whatever reason can only
Play one position on the o line. For instance in 2021 the Bengals drafted Clemson LT Jackson Carman in round 2 and they tried to make him a RG. Didn’t work. They tried RT. Didn’t work well but was a little better
Than guard. And in the playoffs in 2022 Jonah Willliams goes down at LT and they put Carman in a LT the
Only position he ever played at Clemson and the only position he had ever played in HS. Literally this guy only played left tackle period. So Carman goes into the game against the Ravens. He was ok but not

Legitimately good. He allowed no sacks or hits and a handful of pressures. Hakeem Adeniji was a good college left tackle he was a below average guard and was borderline average at RT. If they had played him at LT I think he would still be playing there today.
How did you miss the whole ordeal where T'Vondre Swear didn't weigh in at the Senior Bowl?! I expect better. I'm not mad, im just disappointed.

He’s one of those players who despite not having anything “elite” about him is really great in the moment and finds ways to make plays.
Other players with this “skill” would be someone like Hunter Renfrow or Julian Edelman or on the Defensive side someone like Malcolm Smith, who would be the most average LB for 99% of the game, but if a ball went up in the air or on the ground, he was always in the exact right spot and would make the play.
Even at the combine, when Dallin Holker, messed up running the gauntlet and thought he’d caught his last ball, he hangs on to that ball and catches the next ball one handed and takes them both to the end zone.
Jacksonville had a great draft up to pick 21 overall. And then it sucked.

You miss the point though. What’s the use in having all those good WRs in Tennessee if your QB can’t walk be air he has been hot all year. That HAD TO draft a tackle fuck best player available. My strategy would have been best TACKLE available.

WAY too insistent on trying to convince us of things regarding the Falcons that aren't really apparent. Some things they applaud don't work because of other things, they sidestep a major argument or two against the pick, and are just wrong in other areas.
You can genuinely be the 31st best player AND be taken #8 without either being wrong. We witness it every year. The top edge might be the best player in the draft, but if the first 6 teams need quarterbacks, he's going to be the #7 pick. It's how the draft works. Every year.
And, during the wrap up when Sam mentions that a "plurality" thought Penix was incredibly impressive? That could mean as few as two thought that. The other main definition of "plurality" can't apply to this scenario. And if it could, it's proven false by how the draft unfolded.
But, hey, apparently everyone questioning taking a guy that high when you just signed a guy is only doing so because we all actually dislike Penix. If thst was true, we'd be making that argument even if they'd taken him in the 2nd round. Does ANYONE believe that would be happening?
I do appreciate them burning the first 5 minutes of that analysis parroting the exact thing we've heard from every other tout regarding Cousins' deal really only being for 2 years, and speaking to us about it as though we're too stupid to fully grasp that to boot.
Regardless of what people think about the pick, I think the defense made here was anemic.
FINALLY some level headed takes on the falsons draft using logic instead of feelings. People want it to be a bad move sooo bad because they hate the falcons. Reality is when you take your emotions out of it and look at the facts. Falcons front office nailed it.
The fact that multiple people can lay the entire thing out start to finish using sound logic and people still are confused let's me know folks emotions are taking over their thought processes. Hilarious to watch.

Either could be a good decision in isolation, but together they’re not
It could still work out if Penix is a hit because hitting on a QB is always a huge surplus added in value, but it’s still not optimal or good process for a front office.

Nothing about drafting Penix makes sense. 1 the Falcons aren’t an immediate playoff team. They have holes on their roster. These holes couldve been plugged by not putting all the resources at qb.
I think they definitely would they have been talking for years about stuff like this. It’s certainly the most extreme example for sure but they pretty much always try to see the glass half full with qb discussions
@@insertname5371 This is a 1of1 situation for sure. The question had to be asked because the pick just made no sense from any angle. The reason most teams are tripping over themselves to draft a rookie qb is partly due to the cheap contract compared to their vet counterparts.
The Falcons pretty much eliminated all the value from the Penix rookie contract while also taking away money from building the team. I truly don’t see how one could argue for this pick personally. Definitely guys that are as in tune as the PFF guys.

@@38657 And a good amount of the time, Steve seems to be in one of his "I'm tired of you all being so stupid" modes. He gets a little thin-skinned from time to time. I was a little surprised he'd go there with this: something I'm not sure he actually believes.
Ultimately, he basically did what a lot of people justifying it did. He took this piece and that piece and said it makes perfect sense. But it's a puzzle. The pieces have to fit together.
1) Yes, if you really like a player at No. 8, you get the player.
2) Yes, if you need an upgrade at QB, you make a basically short-term deal at market value for Kirk Cousins.
3) Yes, it is good to have the heir-apparent to the position on your roster.
4) Yes, the Packers addressed a future need by drafting Love and Rodgers, and the Eagles did it with Hurts.
BUT ...
You don't get the replacement at No. 8 when you can fill an immediate need with a starter, considering that you run out of those guys at about No. 15 every year in the draft. Anyone taken after about that point is considered a project who may start next season or beyond. I've been in journalism in major league and major D1 markets (including an NFL market) for decades. The consensus is that second-tier draft talent begins at about No. 15 and extends to the beginning of the third round. It's why so many people feel a disconnect when their team drafts a guy at No. 22 and the broadcasters tell them the guy "might" become this or that, but is going to be a starter next season.
With that in mind, the Packers took Love and Rodgers at No. 26 and No. 24, respectively, and the Eagles took Hurts at No. 53. As much as they want us to believe - like middle schoolers or white women under 45 - that everyone is just a "hater" if they don't jump on board, there would be none of this controversy had they taken a backup late in the first round or later.
This is all "process," as they've labeled it. It has nothing to do with Penix as a player, which does raise a few questions itself. But, again, these are concerns no one would really be asking had they not taken him at No. 8. Everything gets magnified in the top 10, especially with quarterbacks.

If the Titans needed a LT I would have drafted Olu Fishaunu. He played LT and Penn State. I think he was the best option for LT. Latham and Fuaga never played LT.
If the Falcons were so in love with Penix, they shouldn't have overpaid for Cousins. It's that simple. Cousins just signed weeks ago, unlike Rodgers, who had been with the Packers for a decade. Using the Jordan Love example is a false equivalency. You guys seem to be holding water for your former employee/coworker here...

@@1boiboy206 The packers were better, the Packers didn't know if Rodgers was going to retire at any moment, Love was drafted 26th not 8th, Love was not going to be 24 his first season, Love was a developmental qb...and just to remphasize THE PACKERS WERE BETTER. The Falcons have massive, massive holes at multiple defensive positions and chose to use the 8th overall pick on a back up qb instead of filling one of those holes.

I think you guys are overselling how sure of a playoff team the falcons are, even with Kirk. That defense is bad.
Signing Kirk and then drafting a 24 year old to sit for 2 years is a poor use of resources, no matter how much you try to justify it due to your relationship with Zac. There are a lot more holes on that team than just QB and they very well may have been better off overall signing a cheaper option and spreading some of that money to their defense even when you take into account the importance of qb.
Your idea that there were other teams trying to trade for him - 1. At least one of those teams has come out and actually felt the need to deny that. 2. We know teams reach on qbs, frequently. Often it fails. So having there be other teams that want to come up to reach doesn't justify it. Are the Jets justified in drafting Bo Nix at 11 because the Broncos wanted him @ 12?
I think it'd also be interesting to see how many NFL teams would still think Penix is a better option than JJ if you told them that they were both going to be sitting for the first 2 years.
Is that not what all the defensive picks are for?

Here’s what you’re completely missing about the Kirk Cousins situation.
The Falcons just told the Fanbase & more importantly the Locker Room that Cousins is their “Bridge QB”.
No one BELIEVES they can win anything with a “Bridge QB”.
The “Bridge QB” is to get you to your “Real QB”,
Everyone in the Locker Room has a built in excuse to fail, “the Bridge QB is playing”.
The Locker Room will be asking, when can we get to our “Real QB”, so we can “be our best and try to win a Super Bowl, because we can’t win a Super Bowl with our Bridge QB”.
Falcons will be picking in the Top 10 again next season.
Saints will win the NFC South this season.

What I don’t like about your justification of the Penix pick is that you’re just taking for granted that he’s a good QB prospect. Either that, or your new take is “any QB selection in the draft is simply beyond criticism because it might work”, which is absurd, but also hypocritical since you guys (rightly) criticize QB draft choices all the time. If the Giants had taken JJ McCarthy at 6, I’m sure all we would have heard from you guys is criticism of the pick (and that likely would have been fair)!
The whole exercise you guys did regarding the succession plan from Cousins to Penix was just a series of “if… if… then if… but if…” which is silly on its own for the sheer number of “ifs”.
But the biggest “if” of all is “Michael Penix becomes a good to great NFL QB” - not just an acceptable NFL QB, but a good to great one. That is just not a reasonable expectation for this QB prospect, and by far the biggest issue with the Penix selection has nothing to do with Cousins or the Falcons’ “plan” - it’s the fact that Penix is most likely a backup at the NFL level. I don’t understand the logic you guys are using when you say “they view him as worth the #8 pick and think he’s the next Jordan Love”. How the hell is that a valid justification ? Can’t you just say that for any pick??? “Well, the Giants thought Daniel Jones was the next Patrick Mahomes, so we can’t criticize that pick”. It’s just nonsense to me.
Penix was a massive reach with serious problems in his game as a fully developed 24 year old. He’s not likely to be an NFL starter. End of discussion. We don’t need to craft these wild contingent theories to justify a bad pick. The Cousins contract or the Falcons’ succession plan are irrelevant - they selected a mediocre QB prospect at #8
I don't understand how you spend 7 minutes on the Panthers draft which everyone agrees was pretty dang good, but 37 minutes talking about the falcons when the won 7 games with the easiest schedule in football and lost to the Panthers and had an embarrassingly bad draft.
