  • Today I'm installing a new leadpipe (mouthpipe) on this trumpet after the old one was cracked and melted by someone trying to repair it. I show you how to prep each solder joint, how to clean up the solder work and then, on this particular instrument where the old, worn patina is appreciated by the owner, I heat treat the new pipe so it matches the rest of the instrument.

Good job! I think about half of my trumpet repairs involve a lead pipe these days. I buy those generic leadpipes in quantity. Every one needs to be calipered to get the right section of the generic pipe cuts, and to make sure of the receiver to pipe transition being smooth. The worst ones are the amateur repair fixes you have to re-do. Crazy glue is NOT SOLDER!

Yeah...I still have not fully learned the equation: Fire = HOT. Some day I hope to figure that out.

You bet! It's rather easy to find, I use a product called Stay Clean, by Harris (www.grainger.com/product/49JR40?gucid=N:N:PS:Paid:GGL:CSM-2295:4P7A1P:20501231&gclid=Cj0KCQjwkqSlBhDaARIsAFJANki7K8JXeGq_rjV4_y1exNTf0uF2wz75R8WMGd5VQqUb-0omcMKxGgIaAhRDEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds) but there are several others out there. A bottle this size has lasted me YEARS and I solder several times a day, 5 days a week... so it's cheap.
