in my opinion, £7000 is too expensive for university rooms, especially if they're basic! obviously if they're luxury or in London its a different story! especially since most people get £4200 for a loan! Great video!

I agree completely! And a lot of the ones were self catered too, so factoring in living costs you end up with scary amounts of money. Thank you for your comment! 😄

No uni accomidation should be more than 5000 especially in these trying times. Maybe 5.5k or even 6k for en suite but 7k for a 50 week or less contract is absurd.
Also note that although en suites have a their own shower pod.. They make them considerably smaller for that perk

It's disgraceful is what it is. We can subsidise entire homes flats and bungalows through councils and housing associations, but concessions can't be made for students on a "shoe string" budget training and studying?

    • @SavannahPhillipss
      @SavannahPhillipss  4 года назад +3

Yeah, it’s crap :( unfortunately for many unis it’s all about money, they’re building more and more expensive accommodation so they can use it for conferences when students aren’t there. The student loan system as it is doesn’t work as middle class students whose parents can’t afford to give them £10k are stuck with only £5k to live on from student finance, and poor students who receive the maximum loan prefer to save it as they know they have no financial safety net to fall back on. It seems the only group this system seems to work for is the wealthy elite 😞

Considering the highest priced thing at aberystwyth is under 6000 and its a mcfucking studio apartment they need to fucking up their game. All of them seem very expensive. But im just going to share my thought a I go through the video. Note im only going off what unis I've looked at i haven't gone to one yet.
Birmingham: not bad id love that still a bit much price range but it is an ensuite and the desk is in such an awkward space.
Bristol: looks like the lower income rooms at most unis just with a bit more floor space
Cambridge: its ok for the price and for it being Cambridge. A bit more of a fancy council house with the way it was decorated though. Lots of floor space.
Cardiff: not bad except they couldn't decide whether they wanted new or old furniture pick a style Cardiff.
Durham: sharing a room for around 7000? Unless you choose who you bunk with eg a friend was going with you thats shit.
Edinburgh:not bad i liked the big window. The carpet though? Looks like a bed and breakfast of old peoples home than anything. Hospital vibes
Exeter: only the en-suite is what makes this the price it is so unless you really need that bathroom for medical reasons not worth it. Its quite small in general the desk shouldve come road to the bed at the same thickness so you have more room. Would be nice for 5000-6000 price tag.
Glasgow: from what you've show it looks like its in a shabby caravan id honestly rather have better furniture like in Birmingham with less floor space if I was paying that much. Tbh I'd sacrifice an ensuite for nice furniture and floor space but I think that's what the price is.
Imperial: i liked the wardrobe but it doesn't have an ensuite or a decent desk and the desk should be one of the highest priorities considering you're there to study
Leeds: im not mad at didnt even know Leeds had a russel group uni bed could be bigger considering the space and I love the big desk just wheres the personality? Really wish all unis showed an empty and full version of their rooms. The bed placement is a little unnerving and a bad choice considering humans tend to want to easily look at the door as they sleep with feet pointed in its direction and you just can't see the door at all from either angle on the bed
Liverpool: i liked this one no complaints id love that if I could afford it but still expensive in comparison to normal unis. Big bed big desk clear scheme.
LSE: nice amount of room but not worth it at all theres nothing there they couldve had a bigger desk at least.
Manchester: not bad I guess but doesn't have clear pictures good for introverts because common areas are tiny no chance however no ensuite?
Newcastle: not bad but that but that juts out is so awkward whats that about. Its like half way to luxury.
Nottingham: not bad for catered cant say much.
Oxford: very varied but some of them are like almost old fashion almost modern they should probably pick a vibe.
Queen mary: desk could be bigger theres a lot of unused space for no reason.
Belfast damn thats like amazing in comparison to everything else in my opinion nicely furnished
Sheffield: looks like a nice homely bedroom and an en suite. Not a fan of the red though.
Southampton: i really liked this decoration could be a bit difficult but I'd love that in uni.
UCL: I Dont mind it looks like a hotel room at like Disney world or something.
Warwick: i like it not much to say
York: the window looks a little bit low down a bit small and looks a bit shite.

Thank you for this very interesting video. I'm always fascinated how different student life in English speaking countries is compared to Germany. In Germany it is not really common to live in university accommodation on campus. We do have this but, at least at my university, most students lived off campus in their own flat or in a flat share. I also lived on my own at that time. But during my erasmus term in Czech republic I lived in a dorm. Which was a bit old fashioned, but quit similar to those you showed in the video. Want to guess what it costs?
100£ a month. It wasn't catered and a twin room with shared bed. But compared to the UK it was just cheap.
But thanks again for that video. It was nice to get a bit more inside knowledge of University life in other countries.
    Regards from Germany

Thank you for your comment! I find it really interesting too to see how other universities do it! It’s quite uncommon to share a room here, but I think in the USA it’s the norm. £100 a month! 🤯 that’s the dream over here! 😂 university is free in Germany right? Does it end up working out cheap over there? Thank you for the insight ☺️

@@SavannahPhillipss Hello. Yes in Germany universities in general are free. Per term you pay a fee for cheaper transportation, library and stuff. But mostly that is about 200-400€ depends on the city you. At my hometown university, where I also studied it was about 230€. But it's a rather small city and average to small university. In Germany you can't get a catered accommodation, at least I've never heard of it. Accommodation it self at my university was about 200€ per month. We always pay in a monthly interval not a weekly. But as I said I lived in my own flat with my boyfriend now husband at the time.
In the Czech republic it was far more common to live in the dorms. For me it was quit ... well disturbing... at first. Coming from your own flat to a dorm where you share showers with 40 people. But it was an experience worth it. I'm still studying for my masters but via correspondence courses. I kind of miss uni life. But thanks to you I'm always reminded how it was. ❤ If your further interested in uni life in Germany or the czech republic feel free to ask. I'd be happy to have an exchange on that

    • @SavannahPhillipss

That’s really interesting. In Scotland, universities are free for Scottish students, and in Wales and Northern Ireland it’s heavily discounted for Welsh and Irish students respectively. English students get ripped off whichever uni they go to 😅 in catered accommodation we eat our meals in dining halls, some of which can be very beautiful and grand (such as in Oxford and Cambridge). I can’t imagine the shock from having everything personal to suddenly sharing all the showers with everyone! But it builds character, right 😂 and good luck with your masters! And thank you for your kind words, it’s lovely hearing about what it’s like in different countries- especially Germany as I’d love to visit one day!

@@SavannahPhillipss wow never thought that there are different standards depending upon where you live in the UK. Is that just a university thing or are there more differences in the public system between England, Wales and Scotland? The school system in Germany is different from federal state to federal state. At some states you make the a level in 12 years in others you do 13 years. And the subjects can be a bit different. But in total it is all quit similar and university systems are the same everywhere.
Just to confirm I get that right. In a catered accommodation the meals in the dining halls are free right?
I know what you mean with the beautiful and old universities. In Germany we do have very old university like Halle Wittenberg, Göttingen or Berlin. Those have beautiful buildings and History. But most of them are located in the City Center or even devided over the whole city. The classical campus University is not so typical for Germany, which I kind of find sad. For example my university had a quit modern campus like area a bit outside of the city centre. But we've got 3 further parts one in the city Center, a beautiful but old building. We always joked we could still smell the GDR in it. The others quit a bit outside the centre. It was always a pleasure travelling from one part to another, especially if you had a break for 15 minutes but the bus ride alone took 25 😂

Any possibilites that you could travel around all the accommodation and create a recommendation directly? I'm not saying this because I don't like this video, In fact I love this video a lot that would help maybe in the future if my son or daughter could somehow get a college in England.
Anyway, it would be a great RUclips video.

you usually only get a 32-week contract with accommodation so most of these will be £5000 rather than £7000.

    • @SavannahPhillipss
      @SavannahPhillipss  4 года назад +1

Hi, thanks for commenting! I think the most common contract length is 39 weeks (so students don’t have to move out during holidays). For some unis such as Cardiff, Oxford and Cambridge what you said is indeed the case- but for some unis such as Birmingham it’s £7000 even for 39 weeks 😱
