I love the Coast Starlight. I live in San Francisco, and take the train (from Emeryville), to Seattle every year, in the late summer. I have taken the SF-LA route, separately, a few times ... so, I've experienced the whole route. Two weeks ago, I set out for Seattle, excited. Unfortunately, we couldn't go beyond Sacramento, due to a fire, several miles ahead of us. It involved 2 freight cars, carrying a load of lithium batteries. AMTRAK couldn't know; how long the fire would burn, what the integrity of the tracks would be, or what level of toxicity would have to be considered. We became the southbound "Train 11," and set back around 6:30 the next morning. I had a fairly short turn-around ...Emeryville-Sacramento, and back. I felt for so many of my fellow passengers, who had boarded, that morning, in Los Angeles, and had so many more hours ahead of them. I'll plan for another journey, in October, or next spring. I like your written commentary, with only the ambient sound of the train as background. So many channels use background music, which can become monotonous. The station in Salem, is just across the street from Willamette University, which is my Alma Mater. It's always fun to take in the stop, there.
The pontoon strips at 9:43 are part of the dredging operation to maintain the shipping channel in the Columbia River for ocean-going ships that serve the various ports.
Great video. But you should be more aware of where you are at. That body of water is not a river. You are entering the San Francisco Bay area and that would be the Pacific Ocean moving into the area. Remember NOT a river.
So true, he would have gotten more out of the trip, like how far the San Francisco Bay extends both north and south of the cities themselves. When there wasn’t cell service going down the coast? That looked like when the train was going through Vandenberg AFB and by the rocket launching area. It also goes out when the hills are between the cell towers and the train tracks.
A tip for your next train trip: When walking down the train and passing between cars, besides the black rectangle that you can press to open the doors there is another black rectangle at the bottom right. Tap it with your foot and keep your hands clean!
So good to see! Now if we can get the route from Jacksonville-San Diego returning to service would be so awesome-& at least twice daily or preferably 3 times/day!!! 😁
I really enjoyed the trip so far. However, you have no idea of the complexities of homelessness. Your answer to the problem is simplistic. Reserve your commentary for things not so political. Thank you for a remarkable chronicle of your wonderful trip

Amtrack coast starlight express train from Seattle to Los Angeles
That train is on my bucket list
Hangovers seem to be an ongoing theme.
with one minor change you are doing the trip I want to do in reverse. Instead of going to Boston, I want to go to NYC.
Were's the bear... i'm looking for the bear.
Sorry-boring without occasional milage chart and names of places filmed. I got off in Portland.
