      Ross Wood : Me too. Nothing wrong with EH, but I prefer the straight information format, whereas interviews and discussions are more pot luck. When you see the title of the video, and know the channel, you know what you’re getting, and don’t have to listen to the, “um’s,” and, “err’s,” of unscripted conversations, which you can’t take part in, or lead back to a more interesting part of the discussion. Besides, I like the guy’s voice

      Seikio don't lose hope! Keep in mind newspapers usually like to focus on the shocking bad stuff because sells more, and that there's actually a whole lot of good progress going on across the world even as we speak; I live in Alberta and there was there was this huge environmentalists demonstration in my city recently that actually got a lot of attention from the city council.theres also plenty of other people there in relatively powerful positions who genuinely have Humanity's best long-term interests at heart like Greta Thornberg and Elon Musk among many others. So I hate to sound like a broken record but don't lose hope in in your fellow human because the future really is brighter than you think😉❤️

    These are _always_ enjoyable videos! One thing I particularly like about JMG is how, despite fairly meticulous research and strong adherence to orthodoxy he is still willing to entertain and seriously consider heretical thought. I don't think there is any other science communicator who will allow as much 'possibility' to the concept of a simulated universe for instance or even that existing theories may not be entirely representative of the real world. He has none of the chauvinistic, first-world arrogance of certain other figures in astronomy that we might be able to think of... In that I consider him a worthy successor to the late, great and still desperately missed Patrick Moore.

      @JohnMichaelGodier  4 года назад +9

      Thank you and you nailed it. My ethic is not that of a scientist per se, but that of a rational thinking science fiction author. That means that I can ask bigger questions more easily and imagine what the answers might be, so long as it remains within rational thought, philosophy and ultimately solid science. Or, if you will, I want to present ideas as much as facts. But never outside of the possible or rational. But in reality, that's what all hard science fiction authors do.

    if the universe is actually infinite, then the “are we alone” question simply becomes a probability issue. Ie, rather than “are we alone”, the question becomes “how far on average do you have to travel to find an exact copy of yourself”. Now what becomes interesting, is the idea that consciousness may “resonate” with other iterations of itself. Much like the phenomenon on Earth, of completely unrelated people being able to somehow share learned knowledge across great distances. Perhaps dreams are just a faint signal of a copy of yourself experiencing what you think is relatively random things from millions of light years away, in another environment or even another dimension.

    I created my own simulation ... I remember when i was younger over dosing completely out... Every thing was black complete darkness and i tried forming thoughts of my past it felt like I never existed thoughts where gone and i started with a green ball a bouncing green ball going up and down in the black background.. After i formed a second one but after that i remember something... Something reminded me i must have been alive why would i remeber a ball why can i make a thought. then i tried creating a known memory of what i thought was real playing it over and over like walking to the gate from the living room... After that i started comming back but weirdly i was just continuing to do what i was trying to remember i was walking to the door and opening it thats how i ended up here as if i just continued from that point what i imagining.. I was standing in front om my door when i snapped back.. o and youtube started crashing when i tried writing down my experiences in the comments. Scary.
    Edit... Its started to work agai. After i wrote the experience.

    What if the universe is spherical, yet so large that it looks flat to us? Imagine if it were and you could travel so fast that you would go all the way around and end up back at the starting point. If that was the case, then the universe would be finite. But perhaps there are multiple universes.

    I think the fact that we're programs within a simulation really helps to explain why there are so many bizarre anomalies in the universe. I like to think of it as a sign of our simulation-creators' underestimating our true potential, like they never expected us to get this far so they hadn't put in the work to create an elegant solution to certain anomalies because they never expected that we'd even reach a point where we were able to recognize these anomalies as the anomalies that they are, if that makes sense.

    In terms of the Sun's corona being "hotter" than the Sun's surface, I think of it like Earth's Thermosphere.
    On Earth, the surface temperature is hotter than it would be if it were a vacuum due to *pressure* of the atmosphere. This causes the majority of the "trapping" of heat, as cloud modulation and greenhouse gases serve to trap additional heat.
    As the pressure gets lower, higher up in the atmosphere, the temperature gets colder (Dry Adiabatic Lapse Rate) until we reach the Tropopause. Once we get past the Tropopause, radiative warming starts to dominate as the atmosphere becomes thinner (
