Welcome to my first Doctor Reacts video. I've watched Doctor Mike do some amazing medical tv show reviews and saw that it is a great opportunity to do some medical education for all of you. I'm starting off with a Greys Anatomy Review!
I watched Grey's Anatomy as a premed student many years ago to motivate me to study! I haven't watched too many medical tv shows since then and during my premed days, I thought this was the best doctor tv show. In this episode, Meredith Grey starts her first day of surgical residency (meets Derek Shepherd) and I discuss what's real and what's not about what tv doctors say and do. I also do some teaching about common causes of postoperative fever towards the end of the video.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this episode of Real Doctor Reacts to GREY'S ANATOMY Medical Drama Review by Surgeon

Please review the HIV episode where Miranda removes HIV strain from the HIV virus and gives it to the "bubble boy" to help build his immune system. Season 10, episodes 22-23. 22 is the episode she gives him the deactivated HIV virus and 23 is the repercussions of her doing that. Also same season episode 18 shows a family that has three children have cardiomyopathy and they appear until episode 23. My questions: can what Miranda did really happen? Regarding the McNell Family, can that also really happen? I'm really interested in seeing your review (please, please, please), I've been watching GA since episode 1 first aired.
I’m so glad to see a surgeon review this. I am a scrub tech and I’ve been wanting to see someone that is in that perioperative setting review medical shows. Btw... I specialize in complex spine and all Ortho specialties so I’m even happier that you’re an ortho spine guy!
@Raiden Dennis Definitely, I have been using instaflixxer for since november myself :D
Lmao he's the only doctor on RUclips that I've seen admit that Grey's Anatomy is actually pretty accurate 😂
I think it depends on the episodes they review-- this one is pretty accurate but some are ridiculous. My guess is since this is the pilot they probably had a doctor on set helping, but as the series went on they probably got less consults.
He was more concentrating on parts that are accurate than concentrating on parts that aren't. That is my opinion.
Hes not watching just to point out the mistakes... Not to prove anything
N also he is a surgeon.. Most of them aren't
The anesthesiologist reacts videos give Grey's some props too lol
19:00 everyone watching doctor mike was screaming: CHEST COMPRESSIONS! CHEST COMPRESSIONS!! CHEST COMPRESSIONS!!!!
My thoughts too lol
They need a collaboration. :)
@@vampiraJ That would be a dream!! One day perhaps? I made his 100 doctors during Covid-19 video though. Does that count?
@@DoctorDan I saw you on that! That's so cool!
love him for thattt , i literally was thinking that as i watched that part😂😭
I love how you focus on the things that are accurate instead of all those doctor completely bashing shows like this. Way more enjoyable to watch.
Summer Langereis thank you for the kind words 🙏
Even if this show isn’t perfectly accurate, I just finished watching the entire show. When I heard “pulmonary embolism” I thought “oh, blood clot in the lungs, she’ll prescribe heparin”. So I definitely learned some things!
Thanks for watching!
The best reaction I’ve seen - less bashing of a tv show and more life info
Thank you so much! Make sure to check out the Good Doctor reaction video that's coming out later tonight!
My question is...why the heck was Dr Burke, a cardiologist, doing an appendectomy?
Georgianna Miller To be fair, he probably did a residency in general surgery before his fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery. But yeah, it’s weird.
Several seasons later there's an episode where yang and teddy can't remember how to do one, and yang is still a resident!
His entire goal was to scare an intern. He probably didn’t want to do it with a heart patient and felt that he needed a surgery that he could fix if the intern messed up. Just my opinion. 🤷🏾♀️
Georgianna Miller haha I just watched that one
Georgianna Miller, cardio-thoracic surgeon but I understand ya.
Great video! Regarding Alex's obnoxious comment to the nurse: most nurses spend 4 years in school as well. Which makes his comment about "four years of medical school" even more annoying.
This is so true! Nurses need extensive education and expertise to do what they do. They are so valuable to my care team. Thanks for watching!
Also the Surgical care practitioners are just nurses but they open the leg, harvest the veins and close it back again! And on occasion they help out new baby surgeons who are learning how to do it too!
@@DoctorDan There's even an episode about the nurses striking because they felt like the doctors took them for granted
Nurses are amazing.
@@simplyjuannie5128 Is that the episode where they can't get the pump to stop beeping?
no one:
Me : **realizes the characters in the thumbnail are either dead or left **
Me : **cries**
Pilar Dejesus Same
In one of the original promos they used the acronym MAGIC for the original characters that were interns. Now all that's left is M 😭
Mallory Martinez pain 😭😭
noooo i didnt finish watching :(
@@jeeyadesai3761 SORRY
You should react to Grey's Anatomy's episode 15x21 "Good Shepherd" about a spinal surgery. :)
Thank you so much for this suggestion!! I'm going to definitely do a video on this one.
@@DoctorDan I forgot Grey's Anatomy S03E11-12 "Six Days" (part 1-2) about a girl with VATER Syndrome. I think it would be interesting to know your opinion! :)
Episode 6.07 is a major episode on a huge spinal tumor.
Good Shepherd is definitely surgery on someone with scoliosis of a severe magnitude, but there is also a lot of storyline about Derek and Amelia's family. If you haven't kept up, Amelia is Derek's who is also a neurosurgeon.
@@pamelajaye did you realize you said 'Amelia is Derek's'? It makes it sound like Amelia is either an inanimate object, like a car or something; or, that she's his child 😁 it gave me a bit of a giggle 😄
@@IrelandFyre oops!
This is actually my favourite reaction. I could watch a million of these!
Thank you Katerina! I'm going to be coming out with more for sure!!
Alex’s character development is seriously the best in the entire show. I hated him so much in the earlier seasons (this episode especially showed how douchey he is. Lol) and then ended up loving him esp when he was the only one left as Mer’s person 🥺 I was so heartbroken when he left the show 💔 one of the best characters ever.
Yes!! He does seem to change through all these episodes I’m watching!
Please react to Season 6 Episode 7!!! The entire episode is about a very large inoperable brain tumor descended into the spine. You’re the perfect person to review it and I haven’t seen a doctor do that episode yet!!
Yes, I second this!!! Such a GREAT episode!!!!!
So glad to see an actual surgeon do a reaction vid. I really enjoyed your real life perspective. Keep them coming!
Thank you so much Ruth! I am coming out with another in a couple days!
Sees George
Me:CRIES
I've been binge watching Grey's Anatomy on Netflix (for probably the bajillionth time) and I just got to his last episode today 😭.
Aw George.
I think when I went in for jaw surgery, my operating room was like that with the teaching window because it was a university teaching hospital. I don't quite remember because I was really overwhelmed and the residents and doctors were keeping my attention on them to keep me calm.
Alex Talbot my delivery room had a bunch of people bc I didn’t have an epidural. Overwhelming af. lol
could you react to the episode of Callie's trial, it really focuses on orthopedic surgery and possible complications, I am not sure which episode it is...
Thank you for watching and the suggestion!
Doctor Dan I second this, please react to it! It’s season 10 episode 9
I know this is kind of an old video by now but I'm a Medical Student in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and our teaching hospital still has those galeries above the ORs, they are just not used anymore
Thanks for letting me know and thanks for watching!
You should react to the big spinal surgery Derek does! I think it is 6.07. Correct me if I'm wrong. 😂
this is on my to do videos list! thanks for watching!
Does anyone else notice how different the setting changed in greys anatomy like the on call rooms and the hospital walls
Yes by season 7 there really wasn't any more shots of the glass wall
For a lot of shows there can be big differences between the pilot and even the second episode, especially if the pilot was filmed in hopes of getting ordered as a new series. For other shows that get ordered straight to series, there's likely a lot more consistency.
I really appreciate the amount of time you took to critique the actual medicine and not just everyday aspects of hospital life. It's something I've missed from doctor-react videos. Hope to see more from you!
I love the perspective of a surgeon for this show, and your commentary and how you explained everything was extraordinary! Thank you for this video!
Nessa Faith thank you for your kind words and thanks for watching! 🙏🙏🙏
@@DoctorDan Of course! You are so happy and enjoyable to watch!
Operating "Theater" makes me imagine doctors quoting Shakespeare while performing surgery lol
The patient doth bleed too much methinks .
Awesome explaining doc. I'm Honduran and 2 months away from getting my medical doctor diploma. My next goal is to keep on studying hard and apply to a surgical residency. So thanks for your great job, your videos inspire me.
Congratulations on getting this far in your journey! Thank you for watching.
You should watch an episode of Chicago med! There's a doctor Choi... Just saying
Great idea. I have patients in my clinic telling me the same thing about that show!
16:44 no one even liked Alex at the beginning honestly.
I loved him since day 01 actually 😅😅😅😅
I was a patient at BWH in Boston, and I had doctors observe my surgery from the observation theater (not sure what it’s called). Great video!
Thank you for watching! Wow, that's interesting they have an observation theater there!
I watched a video from a British doctor and he said they had a speech like that (Dr Webber’s). American doctors all say it was not something that’s accurate. Interesting dynamic
The code blue shown in this episode is one of the worst ones I have seen in a medical show. She is in V Fib and clearly sounds like asystole and come on...no chest compressions, no medication? But as an anesthesiologist one of the things that triggered me the most is the way the nurse held the mask of the ambu bag.
Can you talk about your ancillary staff during your surgeries? I’m an X-ray tech (working in IR) and it seems everyone talks about doctors and nurses but not so much about the rest of us 🤷🏼♀️
samantha daniels so many specialties are not mentioned...thank you for all you do! Showing you the love...I started out thinking i wanted a bachelors in radiology, I ended up doing nursing, during a volunteer program called Clinical Care Extenders I decided to change that, but I am showing you the love, what you do is so important. As it turned out after a year of nursing program I got so sick I could not continue, without revealing too much I am on my third power port and more PICC lines than I can remember, and many GJ tubes so I am going to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU.
You do important work.
These shows often make it out that the entire hospital is run by doctors with a little help from nameless nurses. It's for the sake of the plot but it is frustrating. I just hope most people watching know that doctors are trained for a very specified job, while techs, nurses and other staff are highly trained for a different specified job and all parts of the care team are equally as vital!
I do just as you did before your med school! Grey's Anatomy gives me motivation to reach my dream 👩⚕️💭
You've got this!
Thank you so much for the support! Love your channel! 😍😍
Should react to code black.
Yessss!!!
or the episode where derek gets shot!
I happened upon this channel (this episode specifically) and he is a very underrated reactor. I really enjoy his reactions and they are very thorough, educational, honest, and entertaining Imo. I definitely think he deserves more subs!
There’s a surgical theatre above the OR because it’s a teaching hospital right?
Yeah. It's really not uncommon. Most ORs used to have an observation room for students, which is why it used to be called an operating theatre.
I work for a large teaching hospital and we don’t have one. Space is at a premium. Guess it just depends on where you are at.
@@clc18mac I would imagine that as technology improves including global access to information, the ability to watch a procedure in person isn't worth what it used to be. As mentioned in the video, I imagine there's video of all sorts of procedures.
Best reaction ever. Very educational and insighful. Instead of bashing inaccuracies he opts In to explaining it and making it right. Ilovehim
my fav tv show!!! your reaction way much better than other doc did.. i love how u explained the life of the intern and doctor in this show.. so fun to watch the medical explaination part.. so balance.. u didnt focus on the love drama like other doctor did.. please react more esp on bigger case in this show..
Ahmad Zairi thank you so much for watching and the kind words!
i looked it up "theaters" were around in the 1880's and you could watch if im not mistaken.
Doctor Dan replies and likes almost every comment! So nice of him to read them!
Appreciate every one of you! 🙏🙏🙏
Even here in Australia, we still have pagers! AND I ALSO HAVE PAGER PTSD! Glad I"m not alone!
My favorite thing about all the medical reviews of this first episode is everyone talking about how important nurses are and how you don’t just piss them off.
who else is enjoying these videos from Dr. Choi?!?! learning loads!! also UTI most seen in CAH
thanks Dr.Choi for editing these videos and even typing out the description of these diagnosis, processes. It takes an incredible amount of time to edit and we appreciate your time and efforts!!
Thank you for the kind words! 🙏
My grandfather's brother actually had a blood clot at the top of his spine that lead to him being paralyzed from the neck down whilst having a shower.
New subscriber here! I love when doctors Do reacts 😍
Can't wait to see more. You look like a really nice doctor!
Thank you for your kind words! Will be coming out with a new reaction video in a couple days!
You have such a positive energy about you. I wish you were my surgeon when i had 2 surgeries after my bike accident. You seem like the kinds who'd explain things to me so i wouldn't be so terrified. Really nice reaction video.
Thanks for watching and the kind words!
I have binged watched all of these in the last 2 days. I’m obsessed with these videos!! I’m currently going to school for nursing and watching this really helps me retain more info!!
I’m a new subscriber, and this is an older video, so I don’t expect a response. I just want you to know that you’re really helping me stay motivated to continue my premed course (no matter how much I hate orgo). I want to be a doctor because I want to help people and because the science is so fricking cool. You really highlight these points in your video. You seem really honest, and you seem like that kind of doctor I want to become. Thank you for all that you do.
S R thanks for the kind words. There is no other job like a doctors. Keep on it! Best of luck
I am so glad that you like this show. I can relate to watching this show and being motivated! All those long hours during Medical school and trying to get through one exam after the other just to be a doctor. I also love the way you teach. You are actually motivating me to be a surgeon, an orthopaedic surgeon. Keep it up!
YES surgeon life is the best life. Thanks for watching and whatever works for motivation - I’ll take it! 🙏
I am not a doctor so I did not sit in a gallery but my daughter was delivered at 9:05am at OSF St Francis in Peoria IL. I gave permission for students to watch.
I saw them and found odd comfort focusing on them. I had a C- section/ epidural so I was awake. Same hospital has also had students start IVs blah blah. Usually no big deal and I’m willing to let them learn but stick my 3 times without luck and your done lol!
This is my favorite reaction video! He is so kind and takes time to teach and explain. Please react to the Code black episode, "It's the end of the world" S2 E 16
So kind of you to say! Thanks for watching and thanks for the suggestion 🙏
New subscriber here! Im a first year medical student from germany and Im absolutely LOVING your videos! You honestly seem like such a calm and empathetic doctor. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into your videos!
In vet medicine, our ABCs of trauma are Airways (respiratory), Bleeding (cardiovascular) and Consciousness (nervous system) so it's interesting to hear the differences
Interesting to know. Thanks for sharing! 🙏
I have a huge abdominal hernia that several local surgeons said they couldn’t repair and I was sent to the hernia clinic at UW Hospital in Seattle - a teaching hospital similar to how they show Seattle Grace. A resident roomed me at the out patient hernia clinic. In talking about my history, records, and scans the resident cheerfully assured me that the surgeon I was there to see will ‘definitely be able to help you - he’s the best there is!’ The surgeon came in a bit later with the smiling resident in tow. And stated that after reviewing my CT scans, he felt it was the worst/most complicated hernia he had seen in his 40 years of surgery, and that weighing the risks and benefits, he felt operating would cause more harm. Then he asked if I’d sign a release so they could use my CT scans for teaching and research. The resident was white as snow , eyes huge, and looked like she wanted to die. Made me think of George.
I think it’s interesting how different doctors reacting to Grey’s tend to think about realism in the show; it largely depends, at least in my opinion, what you’re focusing on the most. The show doesn’t get every medical or drug right, but considering people know it’s as much a soap opera as a medical drama, it’s fair to say most people aren’t using it as a medical guide. What they DO seem to get right - which I’m glad to see Doctor Dan take note of - is the culture in the field, the mindset, and why doctors think the way they do. Having grace for those things make sense when we sit down and remember it’s a television show lol.
I'm studying to be a nurse and I love your videos!
I remember my first year, first time in a hospital, when I had to take a patient somewhere and I did' t know where it was and the looks they gave me, especially old patients, when I was asking where we need to go along the way 😂 but I loved every moment of every day 😊
I have been a patient for many years and never had and intern or even a medical student transport me or any other patient anywhere. They have porters who do that! I'm surprised you didn't comment on this ☺
The one thing that bugs me is very rarely do any of the residents ever have an attending in the room. I know in later residency years, some surgeons will be allowed to operate with the attending checking in from time to time or being available by phone if the need arises. Bailey was PGY2 maybe at the beginning of the series and nearly every surgery she did, she did it alone with an intern in the room. I’ve also never once seen a CRNA in the room either. Anesthesiologists where I work are over more than one room and are not in the room all the time but the CRNA is.
What's PGY2?
Bailey was a fourth year in the beginning I think. (intern 1, resident 2-5)
Loved so much the video! I'm entering Med School next year and your knowledge helped me to get even more motivated!!
Thanks for watching!
I read that Isiah (Burke) actually went in to surgeries with surgeons to learn for acting as his character.
Alex’s bullying of the nurse is even funnier since that nurse has probably been working at that hospital for decades while he’s been there one day. Like barf.
Agreed! Thanks for watching 🙏
You should collab with Dr. Mike!!!!
Thanks for watching! 🙏
I remember when I got my IVC filter. It was probably my 2nd most memorable surgical experience. I got to see it before they put it in and they showed me how it opened up and works. It’s pretty neat. It was really bizarre being numb but still feeling the pressure of them poking around in my neck while they were inserting it. It was a little unnerving. Thankfully I just had that one clot and haven’t had any since then. They did keep me on blood thinners for years though which caused some issues from time to time.
Glad everything went well! 🙏
Thank you very much Dr. choi!!!! i 'am on my first semester in medical school and can wait to begin rotations. thank you for inspiring us aspiring doctors!!
You will love your rotations! Best of luck with your journey. Thanks for watching.
I’m sorry, 48 hour shift? Is that even legal? What about sleep? So many questions..
Truck drivers aren’t allowed to drive over 12 hours bc of sleep issues and killings themselves falling asleep. I’m sure there are tons of issues that can arise from sleep deprivation as a doctor or surgeon.
I love your style of connecting with your viewers, new sub from me! The way you explain what is going on and break down medical terminology is welcoming and approachable, ppl are lucky to have you as their doc! I went to a medical magnet high school and this took me back and refreshed some of what I thought I’d lost 😸 thank you!
I love these videos, it's my fav show and I love how you explain every scene!!!
Awesome! Thanks for watching 🙏🙏
Such a positive attitude! Also you have a way of explaining knowledge in a simplistic manner. Thanks
Best doctor video review format! Education=life blood!
Thank you for watching! 🙏
thank you so much for the video. this so so informative for me. I'm current applying to Medicine this year, it has been a long and tough journey and watching this video has help motivate me to keep going as well.
RE the audience/observatory/streaming part: the company I work with provides some of the webcasting and streaming services for hospitals in toronto :) coolest thing I ever got to see was a face transplant!
Can't wait to see you react to more episodes of Grey's! Thank you for an interesting video.
Love from Russia xx
Thank you for watching! My 2nd Grey's reaction is being posted today!
I wish neurosurgeons would talk more about arachnoiditis. Didn't even know it existed or could be a possible complication of spine surgery 😢
Why would you place an IVC filter without confirming they actually have a lower extremity DVT first?
For some reason, 'Chief' sounds like it's higher than. 'Attending'😆
I've watched a lot of reaction videos, yours is so informative and enjoyable, the best in my opinion

I think that Edward Murphy is the CMO of the Greys anatomy hospital.
Can you do a video on the episode where they take their boards in season 8 I would love to see a surgeons perspective on that episode
Yes. Definitely on my todo list. Thanks for the suggestion 🙏
I wish they showed more nurses. A lot of the stuff I see them do in everyday patient care is actually what a nurse would do.
Grey’s Anatomy season 7 episode 11 - Is it realistic that surgeons just walk out of a surgery when they find out the person they are operating on was the shooter in a shooting? They take an oath to save whoever possible, full stop, right? Not whoever possible unless the person was the shooter. Right?
Awesome video Dr. Choi!!! Happy to see that you made a channel!!
Thank you for watching!
This was so good! A lot of others you can tell they think the whole things stupid. You should do the lecture series episode! Lots of big cases, super focused on the medical side.
Hoping to do some quality medical education through this channel. So glad you enjoyed!
this is one of the best reaction videos out there! you should definitely react to more greys anatomy!!!!!
I've watched a lot of Dr Reacts videos. I hadn't yet seen "Code Black." It turns out to be an excellent and pretty accurate medical drama. I highly recommend it. I think you'd like it. 👍
Can you do season 2 episode 6? It’s called “into you like a train”. A pole goes through 2 peoples spines. I would love to hear your feedback on the episode!
great video! I’m a huge fan of this show, I’ve seen it twice all the way through lol!! fun fact: the original title of the show was “complications”! (horrible name lol I’m glad they changed it)
Please review Season 3 episode 12. I think it’ll be really good for a spinal surgeon
I love to see new Dr. Choi videos in my inbox! I start my freshman year of college next fall and truly aspire to become a spine surgeon. It would be a dream to do some shadowing hours or volunteer work this summer at Long Island Spine! Is it something that LISS is open to Doc? Thanks a lot! - Diego Curbelo
Diego Curbelo best of luck with your journey and thanks for watching! We don’t have a program like this set up at our practice, I’m sorry!
Do you think intelligence is key in becoming a doctor? Or is it work ethic? My uncle is a pediatric surgeon and he swears by the fact that intelligence means nothing in becoming a doctor, that what matters is heart and being committed. What do you think? (open question)
Intelligence has some part in it I think but 99% of the journey is heart and being committed - i agree with your uncle! I have a video I recently made detailing my own journey. hope you can watch.
@@DoctorDan for sure I can. I've watched almost all of your videos. I'm an aspiring physician myself. Thank you for replying.
Literally, Never. I heard there was on at an affiliate hospital but no one ever sat in it. It was a myth lol.
You have to review Grey's anatomy S06E07, insane spine tumor surgery!!!!
Thank you!! That is definitely on my todo list!
The music at 26:41 caught me so off guard
question. How do you and your wife balance work and home if both of you are doctors? Aren't that stress for
It is stressful! We get all the help we can get and also try to outsource chores to a housekeeper and also a nanny for our child.
ive seen 5 different people react to this same episode you are the only one that was actually helpful
Can you do season 2 episode 17 that’s the one with the code black and a bomb in a guy , bc he shot him self with a homemade bazooka

Please please please react to the Dr. Death podcast 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Great idea!!
Aww so many of the characters are not in the current/final season. DVT turns to a PE. I’m a senior in high school.
I live in a small state in Mexico, and in the city I live, we have only three state hospitals, the university regional hospital, the zone general hospital and the issste. And none of them have on call rooms, according to my mum (nurse), dad (doctor), and aunt (nurse). Everyone who needs sleep has to find a storage room or something 😂😂😂
Catch up on ur videos as just found u. Other Dr I watch which have a crush on is Dr. Mike
Thank you so much....i was thinking it cant be a normal thing to have that observation, unless maybe there is some crazy complicated surgery like maybe separating conjoined twins or something. I think i held onto that belief because in Europe the OR is often referred to as “theater.” Now we know...
You should watch season 6 episode 6
