I bought this grill last month. Best grill everrrrrr. A couple years ago I switched from gas to charcoal and absolutely loved the change in taste it brought. Recently moved and wanted a big bbq but didn’t know masterbuilt had this. Saw it and had to get it. I’ll probably never switch back to gas. The only part I’ve always hated is the cleaning haha. I want this baby to last for as long as possible so I had to get er done. Thanks for the video
Thanks for that awesome post. My only gasser is a small weber Q1200. I use that for quick burgers chicken and steaks. Enjoy the pit, and thanks for the support. If you ever have any questions. gallerybbq@gmail.com
I like the almost whispering, voice over commentary after the exploding intro. Its kinda soothing after jumping into icewater of explosions. Seriously it was a nice video. I bought some super heavy aluminum foil type sheets to wrap the top of the heat exchanger with. I figure it should help it last instead of rusting away from all the drippings. Instead the juices will still drip and vaporize on the heavy foil stuff instead of the heat exchanger. I am one of many I suspect, waiting on the container ship to land in port with the Masterbuilt 1050s. Apparently Masterbuilt is drop shipping them all to the end users to save the time, of another week of shipping, to their distributors. It still seems like forever while waiting for the dam thing . Ha ha! Oh well I just keep stockpiling types of fruitwood and buying accessories. I got 6 of those Kingsford Buddeez Kingsford 8-Gallon watertite storage/dispensers for each of my hardwoods. I also picked up a 25 lb bag of Lump just to see how it does against the Kingsford I bought their cherry, hickory, and apple, and regular charcoal briquets . Its still my favorite and they make some of the best accessories too, from the over 100 yr old USA company. I bought a Tell-Tru Real calibrate-able gauge to replace the "Fischer Price" stocker (as many call it.) I also got the real fiberglass tadpole seal and sealer to build it with like the big heavy USA smokers use. I know I could run the factory stuff but its just a matter of time for some of it, so why bother. I am copying the heat exchanger, and lower half of the chimney/firebox so I can make replacements out of stainless before those rust out. Those factory ones I will run, till they rot out! I guess I can fab up a water trough too. That is a good idea. Thank goodness I still have my tig welder! I have some stainless rod, I am gonna cut, for their well known, too large of briquet openings. But if you had yours clog up with ash, well, I will just have to see. I'm pretty sure that Kingsford Charcoal isn't "Dirty"! That top firebox buildup is Creosote from the wood chunks your burning/smoking. The greener woods and lower temps put out tons of creosote! Charcoal does NOT! You also can have so much ash or too much smoke wood in your ashbucket that your ashbucket gets too full. And that can eventually kill a fire if the ash cant fall down, Then the airflow gets blocked and - WHAM- No Fire!. I have used regular oven cleaner on creosote stuff like that and really filthy grates but be careful its pretty strong cleaner. Mostly I have always used the "Simple Green" cleaner for all my automotive oils/ grease stains and bbq pits, but I will look for that Pitt Boss and Weber cleaner I had no idea they made it. Thanks.
Ahoy Brother!! I'm a regular to your site. I recently had a nasty experience due to my own lack of attention to detail with this machine. I keep all my grills/smokers in the garage, I pulled the Weber out to the driveway, did my cook, served my family & slid the unit back inside the garage, my boneheaded mistake was forgetting to slide the 2 "bayonets" back in their slots to stop the cook. At 0200 the C02 alarm went off & The Fire Dept. came to my home. Sat optest on my alarm system, however complete waste of their time due to my lack of attention to detail not to mention the unnecessary endangerment to my family. Just want to exemplify how important it is to not to forget to slide those units back into the machine.
WOW DUDE that's some story. Thank God everything turned out ok. I once had some spoiled garlic fall behind the stove. long story short. I'm thinking gas leak. called and 3 min later my house was emptied by the cops and fire dept. lol Oh well.
Thanks kindly for the video. I bought my 560 fully assembled so I've had to go backwards learning the ropes so I can get it as clean as you have. Great video! I've watched quite a few videos so I'm not sure if you are the guy that I heard saying the mod to reduce the amount of coals falling through the charcoal grate in the firebox wasn't helpful,, I was having a similar problem had plenty of coals in the hopper but my temperature kept falling and not getting near my target. I thought the problem was that the mod that I concocted was snuffing out the heat. What I figured out was that if I shook the charcoal tray in the hopper the ashes above the tray would clear out and my temps quickly advanced to the proper target temp, so I'm going to stick with the mod which I do believe is saving me fuel. Thanks again!
Hello. Yes, Thats me. The dead ashed got clogged up cause the ash to built. My temp dropped on a few cooks and I finally figured it out. I then removed that Mod and all it awesome again;)>..
I've read that if you top it the hopper whilst grilling you shouldn't do so above a certain temperature. Has anyone got any advice before i start using my masterbuilt the best method I should use if I need to top up whilst on a long smoke or grill? I don't want to open the hopper if there's going to be flames shooting out from the top.
I top mine (like 3/4s or 4/5s full) for long smokes but not for simple bbqing. Sometimes I forget to insert the dampers after a short cook so leaving a bunch of coals would be wasteful. Has anyone else noticed that charcoal has really escalated in price over the last year and a half? Anyway, I've not encountered any deleterious effects from simply adding coals to the hopper during a cook
This was super informative!! I love mine and recently the heat has not been going though the chamber and into the grill part. Could not cleaning properly cause that to happen? The fan turns on and everything but the heat won’t transfer over. Any additional help would be appreciated.
Wow Tommy so much work....... Great MOD: the water pan,,,, seems small, but then it seemed like it really took a great deal of water? I didn't so much understand,, the dirtiness of the Kings/Bluebag c-coal turned off the smoker? Turned off the fan? I've always like and use the KF bluebag, along with my big 40 lbs. bag of Mexican Mesquite.......
Pretty sure he's saying the burn box grate he added did not work out well. From what I saw in the video it did look pretty congested. Can't congest it too much. I'm thinking maybe of adding two sticks of round stock to the plate, one to each side of the one it already comes with.
Great video! For the grate mod, I bought a set of thin SS skewers and cut them then wove them into the fire grate. Seems to do the trick and doesn't restrict air flow.
Thanks for the video. I believe I heard you say it was 10 cooks since the the last cleaning. Would you say that every 10 cooks or so its recommended to conduct this "deep" cleaning?
Coated my 560 pan with flax seed oil and then foil, keeps things from sticking and then remove the foil. Same with manifold and it' seems to be staying much cleaner, just a quick wipe down.
Great video. I appreciate your comment the other day. I just got the mods from lss and a hopper box. Have you had any issues with the fan or lid leaking? You seem to know a good bit about the grills. Thanks for sharing Jess

4:22 my heating manifold seems locked in along with the tray in the back. I have the 540. I noticed you’re using the 1050. Does it come out the same way?
Hi, Love your channel!! What is the name of the slim line Water Pan you mentioned on this episode? Looks great and I'd love to order one. But need to know the brand/name. Thanks!
Common issues from what I’m seeing; on my 1050 the fan intermittently stops working during long cooks, and at times the temp will not go above 500. (Frustrating when I’m trying to sear waygu ribeyes). Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks for your Gravity expertise. I’m about 3 cooks in on mine and just wondering how long your charcoal chute takes to cool after using? I hesitate to use mine if it’s going to rain and can’t get the cover on because it’s still so hot, like hours afterwards. I do remember to put the air and heat stops back in. Thanks
Top one backed up my fuel. In other words, it did not let it dropdown. Remember, Kingsford runs dirty and I've heard good things from a cleaner running fuel. I am not the maker.
The mods I've seen work well go on the burn grate not on the bucket. My 560 is due any day now. Glad to see that the over the bucket may not be the best idea. Really like the idea of the water tray. Curious to see how that one works out.
@@ramirorodriguez9671 The burn grate part did not go well for me. I use Kingsford blue bag and because it burns dirty, It clogged up on the grate. Good luck.
I know of people who cover their grates with foil when cooking, I cant stand that. However, would it be helpful to use foil to line the inside pan and help cleanup or even longevity of the grill?
Great video. Just picked up a GS 800 and actually want to take care of it, which I sadly haven't done with previous BBQs. One question, after hosing down the interior of the grill, do you dry it off or just let it air dry? Thanks.
You can dry it and i'll throw you a tip on how to do that. Get yourself a leaf blower and blow away:)... I used to dry my Bike like that, now i do the pits.!
Hey Tommy, love your videos!! Bought a MB560 couple weeks ago. Only have 4 cooks so far but love it. It might replace my Grilla smoker as my go to cooker. Have you used lump charcoal yet? What do you prefer, lump or regular charcoal?
Good choice! Lump is awesome as it burns cleaner. But also burns faster, way faster. Because of cost I can only use dirty kingsford blue bag. Remember, I do 3-4 cooks a week! dan, keep me posted on your progress.
Great video! I’m having a hard time locating the modifications. I understand that you don’t recommend the grate for the cook box but where did you get the one for the ash box?
How long do you think this pit will live before it rusts through? A bit concerned about the heat assembly, and hopper grate. Are they easily replaceable from masterbuilt?
I know this video is a little old but I have never see anyone clean the inside of their pit before. I am all for keeping the grates clean and vacuuming it out, but in my humble opinion you are removing the “seasoning” from the pit every time you do this. Am I out in left field here?
Not quite sure I understand why one would put in a new temperature gauge? Thousands of people use the stock one without issues. So why would you upgrade that part?
Also, have you are anybody else used Goo Gone Oven Cleaner. I’ve used it on my race bike and RZR for engine cleaner and it beats everything, is it safe for the grill? You should try it!
I've read some people on you tube saying don't use any cleaning products at all and just scrape off and generally give it a. Good clean, the reason being is that you would have taken all the pre seasoning off the Bbq by using cleaning products and then would have to pre season. It after every clean. Can someone with experience comment on this?
Looks a bit questionable but its held up for this guy over 400 cooks. Good enough for me, I wouldn't expect really any grill of this type under $1000 to last more than 10 years.
too much work. what I do is I only fill the hopper up a third of the way. then I do all my cooking, then when I am done I crank it up to 700f and burn out the rest of my coals and it gets so hot that it turns the grease into ash.

PRO-TIP. When opening the hood open slowly otherwise the suction will stir up the ash. Also, lump makes way more ash than charcoal. I hope that helps.

Check my Facebook Masterbuilt Group. Thanks-0
Great Stuff!!
Glad you enjoyed it
Hey Tommy, love your videos!!
The Gallery Backyard BBQ 10-4, haven’t tried lump yet. Definitely let you know how things turn out! Take care bro.
Where’d you get the water pan?
LSS MODS.
Great video! I’m having a hard time locating the modifications. I understand that you don’t recommend the grate for the cook box but where did you get the one for the ash box?
Hello. Have you signed up to my facebook group? I know he posts in there.
masterbuiltgratemod@yahoo.com
The Gallery Backyard BBQ thank you. Joined your Facebook group and bought the MOD. Excited to see more videos.
@@kewball012 AWESOME. Enjoy and if you have any questions, LMK
How long do you think this pit will live before it rusts through? A bit concerned about the heat assembly, and hopper grate. Are they easily replaceable from masterbuilt?
david, mine is still going strong and not sure on the replacement parts. Cheers.
Google LSS MOD for high end replacement and additional parts to improve this amazing grill!@@thegalleryBBQ
what do you mean by “Kingsford runs dirty”?
It leaves lots of Ash. I cleaner fuel leaves was way less ash. Thanks-).
The Gallery Backyard BBQ Thank you!
What do you recommend then?
Did you do a burn to get the degreaser off before spraying it with oil?
Correct. Enjoy, its an awesome pit.
A Tommy can I use any kind of degreaser on my 1050
Sorry but not sure-. check this one out. amzn.to/46ygRPO
I know this video is a little old but I have never see anyone clean the inside of their pit before. I am all for keeping the grates clean and vacuuming it out, but in my humble opinion you are removing the “seasoning” from the pit every time you do this. Am I out in left field here?
Chris its all personal preference. Remember. If you allow grease to built you up your chances of a fire. Cheers.
Tommy, I just cleaned my 560 a few days ago. I’m a little ashamed after watching this.
Haha. Thanks and I do appreciate the comment.
Not quite sure I understand why one would put in a new temperature gauge? Thousands of people use the stock one without issues. So why would you upgrade that part?
It has actual numbers that you can see and read. The MB gauges lack that!
Thanks!
My man. Thanks brother this is greatly appreciated!!! Cheers
Did you cut those grates to size yourself?
No cutting involved!
@@thegalleryBBQ oh damn, where'd you find em? They fit perfectly
@@thegalleryBBQ oh yeah, here's that comment. Where did you find those grates to go over the ash bin?
Damn, I was just about sold on one of these Masterbuilt Gravitg rigs but that looks like a giant pain in the ass.
No more than any other pit!
Great, now that I’ve watched this, I bet Kelley will have me helping clean the 1050! LOL.
Glad to help. lol Enjoy and as usaul, Thanks for supporting:)...
Where is the water pan that you set next to heat source
Cody, not sure what your asking?
Also, have you are anybody else used Goo Gone Oven Cleaner. I’ve used it on my race bike and RZR for engine cleaner and it beats everything, is it safe for the grill? You should try it!
I've read some people on you tube saying don't use any cleaning products at all and just scrape off and generally give it a. Good clean, the reason being is that you would have taken all the pre seasoning off the Bbq by using cleaning products and then would have to pre season. It after every clean. Can someone with experience comment on this?
You should re-season your pit after every deep clean!! Cheers
Why would you want the temperature thing when you have the digital on the side
Jose. Those are known to be off as much as 75 degrees either way. You're welcome!!
Tommy would you recomend buying another temp probe? Or is the masterbuilt probe good and accurate enough to use?
@@MyAlanwhite buy another... temp and temp control is to important...
Cool
Thanks-)
There you go...no big deal
Thanks-)...
No wonder when I crank it up to 600°f I get a unstoppable flame. I feel really dumb.
Grease?? Feel free to email me gallerybbq@gmail.com
Looks like the heater parts are gonna be points of failure from the quality of metal used. I hope someone manufactures it out of a better material.
Regardless. Best pit under 1k and better then any Pellet. IMHO
Fuck knows what it's called. Hilarious
