After my shoulder injury I fully avoid using my shoulders to pull me up. I strictly use this technique now i.e. totally using the back muscles, as shown the video and I can't even do two full pullups this way. Good-bye ego!

It’s plain to see these are so much more impressive than regular pull-ups. Once you get to 15-20 per set of just chin above bar, move to chest to bar for as many of the set as you can. You’ll be glad you did.
Also, your freaking back Daniel. Holy crap. Congrats on that work of art.

I have been following many teachers on RUclips to learn a foundation in calisthenics and i find you are the best teacher on this subject that I have found. I am almost 60 years old with a now compromised lower back and wrists from many years of tattooing many hours a day. I am also 6'2" tall and 145 lbs. As you can imagine I need to start slow and work slowly and steadily towards my goals to rebuild from the ground up. You are the only one that I really trust to follow. Where do I go from here for beginners instruction from you in my condition?

This is the only other pulling exercise I do besides deadlifts! My lats are tender as fuck from doing these 5x5 yesterday! I want to be able to go all the way up and stick my chest on that bar like it's connected with fucking super glue. Such insane back and bicep activation! I used to hear clicking noises in my shoulder when I would do pull-ups, and now that I'm doing them this way, it's just a smooth contraction all the way up. So convenient too because all I need is my bodyweight to get my arms and back jacked as hell.

I've been doing pullups the regular way for so long that it was really hard for me to get started with this. What I did was put a chair a yard out in front of me and put my heels on it to take off some of the weight. Then I did a number of sets to get the feel of it. It felt like doing pushups upside down!
I found this post looking for help because I was only feeling my pullups in my shoulders and knew something was wrong. The tip that helped most was to pull my elbows down toward my hips. Just holding that thought with each pullup goes a long way towards getting the form right.

    • @altuber99_athlete

The best I learned to depress and retract the scapula, was by watching other people doing it. So, just watch videos from Daniel or from LittleBeastM. I mean *to watch*, not to listen: Don't just listen whatever they're saying, instead, mute the video, and as you watch 'em performing the pullup, imagine yourself doing the *exact same thing* they're doing.
This is called _Imaginary training_, and research's shown it's effective for strength training (check ergo-log.com).

Hey Daniel, this tutorial is comprehensive and well put-together. Thank you. Question: so basically, there's no progression for touching your chest to the bar (the true "perfect pull-up"), you just keep trying with perfect form and eventually the strength to do so will build up? Or is there some auxiliary work to be done to achieve chest to bar?

Good day. Let me first thank you for your vids. Absolutely fantastic.
I have an issue. I am now 52 and I had a medical procedure almost 20 years back which severely affected my right lat and it looks like cut in the middle. I can still do a good number of pull ups and chin ups..about 10 max. My problem is I am unable to pass 10 while I used to do 27 when I was 17. Also none of them is complete. I am unable to pull my chin to the bar.
