- My first impressions of the game are written down below. I've also compared this game with 'Dirt Rally 2.0' which is its competitor. I did not have any influence over anything I wrote in this review and all of this is my personal opinion. Please note that this is not the final build of the game and it will only release sometime in September 2019.
WRC 8 is a rally simulation game that surprised me quite well. It is the only official FIA licensed game and is developed by KT Racing (Kylotonn) using their own proprietary engine. I did not think I was going to enjoy this game much. But now that I got to play it, I'm loving it right now. I was not really interested in the game at first since it didn't look very realistic from the videos, I've watched. But after playing it, I believe the third-person camera does not do justice for this game.
There are changes to the cars’ steering and handling behaviors from WRC 7. And it's a lot of improvement. For me personally, I prioritize force feedback the highest than anything and I'm happy to say the game does deliver it... It's no 'Assetto Corsa' but it's much better than any 'Dirt' I've played. I could never find a good setting in the 'Dirt' games but in WRC 8, the force feedback was good enough from the start and after tweaking it a little more, I'm really enjoying it right now. There are a lot of car tuning options to make the car drive according to your style. I didn't tune much but that's only because I'm just bad at tuning. There are also a number of tires to choose from. And this becomes tricky when using the dynamic weather system. I can't really talk about the realism of the physics because I've never driven a rally car. But It feels realistic to me... I find the cars to be more grippy comparted to 'Dirt Rally 2.0' but I don't think that's anything bad. Again, I really can't tell which is more realistic; physics wise. Both these games do a good job at it...
Graphically, the game is good looking but nothing mindblowing... I found some stages looking really beautiful and some were just average. Dirt Rally 2.0 has better graphics in my opinion and I think a lot of it has to do with the lighting and post-processing. Also, I tried a number of cars and there is not much reflection on the paint, this feels a little odd to me. But once it starts raining, the game does look beautiful..
Sounds of the cars feel realistic but it could be improved. Pops and crackles are very muted which is a bummer. When comparing sounds, 'Dirt Rally 2.0' has a much more satisfying and better sound to listen to. But vehicle interior sounds were great.
Content-wise, this game has a lot. Locations include Monte Carlo, Sweden, Mexico, France - Corsica, Argentina, Chile, Portugal, Italy - Sardinia, Finland, Germany, Turkey, Wales, Spain, and Australia. And there are a lot of stages inside these locations and most of them have a reversed variant as well. There are a lot of cars too including historical cars which are mostly RWD or FWD and they are very fun to drive. So content-wise, there's a lot. There are also test areas and training modes to develop one's rally skills. For this current build of the game, online features and career mode was locked since it is still in the development process. There is also a split-screen feature which is great since not many games offer it anymore. So content-wise, there is no match for this game.
A new dynamic weather system has been added which I'm using in this video (storm to clear). There are also random race events that I've noticed, like opponent cars broken down the road. I found the stages to very interesting to drive. There are a lot of variations on every stages and the level design is on point.
The game still hasn't been released yet so there are a couple of bugs that I noticed as well. Like weird car movements before the race start, unrealistic shadow artifacts around the car (this happened only once for me). But I really wouldn't be concerned over the bugs because this is not the final build of the game.
There are also some things that could be improved. The in-game wheel doesn't turn much from the center and it would be really cool if it was in sync with my wheel. The third-person camera movement could be improved and even though there are a lot of camera adjustment options, even after adjusting it, I still can't enjoy it very much.
In the end, what really matters is how one enjoys the game. WRC 8 is very realistic, looks good, has a lot of content and I find myself wanting to play this game much more than 'Dirt Rally 2.0'.

I watched your movie accidentally. Interesting impressions. It's a pity there's no cockpit view. That's arcade-ish. I played Dirt, Assetto Corsa and Project Cars 2 (using Thrustmaster TX) on Xbox One and Dirt most often reminds me of steering with dead fish forcefeedbackwise. AC is good, PC2 is good with some cars and I can't get a good feel of Dirt either, no matter what I tweak. Cheers!

So you know the tracks by heart. I don't think you understand what true rally skills are all about. It's about navigating an unknown road, and coordinating your movements with what you hear. Are you American?
I love the sounds of the spectators around the track when they use the horns and the cheering.

I do not have WRC 8, but after your comparison, I would assume your judgment is right (obviously you have put in hours into Dirt and WRC), I will be making a purchase when it comes out.

You just reviewed alpha version of WRC 8. It's 0.14 version for that moment. Many things will be changed.

I'm glad that the official WRC game is catching up or maybe past the Dirt Rally. Unfortunately, for VR drivers the DR is still to only option. Hope that changes at some point.

I'm so tired of people saying this game has bad physics just because it plays/feels different than dirt rally 2.0. Who's to say this game is not more realistic than dirt rally 2.0? Or who's even to say that neither are realistic and they're just games, if you want the 100% real thing do rally in real life. Thanks for reviewing this game in a bubble the way it should be. Too many people love dirt rally and when they review this, they say it is shit because it is not dirt rally.
And what guarantees you that the people saying Dirt's gravel physics are better aren't actually amateur rally drivers?

i wish this would make it's way more towards the extreme superfast arcade instead. WRC3 was fantastic, then it tried to be realistic and tbh it failed most of the time. now its just a total different beast.

Hi, Xpert, bought WRC 8 on January 2020, and apart from the wheel animation in the cockpit view, I still can't tweak the wheel(G29) right, please help with the wheel settings? I have to set the 540 in logitech gaming software? and how to do the settings in game?

Yeah, it was weird. It didn't follow the car's perspective but followed with the road.

I play dirt 4. On xbox. I like how the cars handle in this game and can break traction. And the way you need to work the breaks and RALLYCROSS, trucks. So hopefully it gets ALOT better and in depth with career mode wit different styles of racing.

After reading your impression its make me want to try wrc game. Never played one before. Only played dirt rally. I just like the dynamic weather system and more importantly the amount of content. I enjoyed dirt rally 2.0 a lot but I dont enjoy buying add on like the stages and cars.

There's something you forgot to mention in the description which I would love to hear about. How's the crash mechanics, I've found crash model in dirt to be leagues ahead of most of the car games.

Yea this WRC8 game is very good. "Dirt" cars feels like weightless cars that running on glacier ice. I recommend this game

Thanks man! I definitely needen your opinion. I am driving Rally myself. I am just 14 but i did lot of testing in an Fiesta R5 and drive right know an Fiesta R2. I have to say that i have played WRC2, 4, 5 and the latest, WRC 7. after there was no WRC 6 i switched over to Dirt Rally. It was the First game which was pretty Realistic. Not completely like an real Rally Car, but more realistic than any WRC games which i played before. So i played Dirt 4 aswell and because WRC 7 was pretty cheap. It was not even 1% realistic. The Force Feedback was also really bad. So i have to say that Dirt Rally 2.0 is still the best game on the Market, at the Moment. But i‘m excited for WRC 8 and i‘m really looking forward to see how realistic it is.

Dont know guys, I dont see the point of playing with a streering wheel if u ware going to play with 3rd person camera. IMO is best in 1st person. Other than that, good gameplay.

I really like rally racing my only concern with this game is it probably will not support my accuforce direct drive wheel. Dirt rally 2.0 does support my wheel and I have the game. If this game would support my wheel I definitely would buy it!!

Identica prova speciale del rally di Spagna di wrc 7, in tutto e per tutto. Solo grafica un pò migliorata con l'aggiunta della Polo r5. Un pò poco considerando il tempo avuto per migliorarlo (2 anni). Mi auguro che la capacità dell'auto di modificarsi agli urti sia diventata almeno decente. E' brutto schiantarsi ai 140 km/h di muso contro un muro e danneggiare leggermente il motore.
