i think thats a huge part of why its hard to succeed, not just the hard labour, but doing it at sea.

If that were the case it's a little ironic getting ridiculed, lectured, and pushed by a main deckhand who died of an actual overdose after years of substance abuse.
@@morsebaittackleco.5250 it’s ironic but extremely likely. From what I’ve seen about 100% of the fleet captains included seem to struggle with pretty much every kind of addiction known to man. So much so that i don’t think they count being addicted to something as an excuse to be a lazy shitbag.

And I have no doubts that a lot of those guys that work on deck probably have a few vices but non the less stepping into that world and not performing is what he’s being ridiculed for. He knew what he was getting into…

Captain Bill seems like the type of Dad that has the potbelly 6 pack. He looks fat but you push on his stomach it’s hard as a rock.
This greenhorn was from Alabama. He disappointed me. I'm from Alabama and I went for kings and opillio some cod. I also started working on boats in Florida. I love commercial fishing

I don’t eat right but I didn’t know it can effect a person so hard they can’t function. Based on seeing what this greenhorn is dealing with. I’ve never been pushed that hard without sleep. The most I’ve had to stay awake is 24hrs and that wad kinda tough.

Is there not some kind of "apprentice boat" system that they can put all the wannabe greenhorns onto and send them out into real conditions to find out if they're up for the job or not? A captain is risking a lot by putting an untested man on his boat this way.
I think it's very much a sink-or-swim sort of arrangement. They minimise their crews to maximise on profits, which means there's no slack for anyone, not even the Captain, and there's next-to-no training. I know when it goes well, they can make more money than I could ever make in a regular job, but still...
I've done piece-work once in my life, working on a farm, and it was TOUGH. but at least the land wasn't actively trying to kill you in the way the sea is. I think you have to be a special sort of person to do it for any length of time- not necessarily good or tough, but the sort of person you never want to get into a bar brawl with, because no matter how hard you hit them, or how many times you put them down, they'll always get back up with a murderous glint in their eyes and a smile on their face.

Lots of captains don’t own there boats. Most are provided boats by a company or another owner. That could explain why Bills on another boat. I know Jake dosnt own his boat he has to pay royalties to the boats owner.

This industry is similar to Telecom Construction. Dangerous. Hard work. Requires being away from home. Chock full of burnt out old dudes who didn't save and young drug addicts who never had to earn it before. These guys have it better at least. They take the employees out to sea where they can't bolt.

He does seem to care. He did let the guy rest, but he had to reiterate that the guy needs to eat and drink during his shifts and after. He could put not just himself at risk but everyone else too if he's physically weak and burnt out. Bill has an expectation and it's high.
