    Every time I watch this show I get so homesick. Miss seeing these guys every year before they made the big trip towards Dutch. Before this show ever aired crabbers were celebrities to us Alaskans.

    As a father myself I know were he is coming from, but sometimes you need to trust your kids have learned enough from you to make good calls in bad situations and they can only learn that by experiencing it with you so when you are not there they know what to do instinctively, but it's as scary as hell

    I would love to go out there on the sea and do this just to make enough money to start a business but damn the sea is scary these dude are out there in storms I’m okay going to the beach and swimming or fishing on a sunny day but this is next level
    I wouldn’t even know where to look for a job like this

      First of all being a greenhorn is incredibly difficult, my neighbor a young 22 year old man who's built large and works for UPS freight went up to Alaska to try his hand at it and came back. They treat outsiders poorly and pay poorly so I wouldn't try it as a man let alone a woman, it might not be the best idea. I'm not saying a woman can't do this job but it's literal frozen hell.

    If they all signed up to work to a specific date then they should all be prepared to do so.
    If they worked to that time, but the captain demands they work longer he does NOT have that right. Respect your captain & respect your team. Slavery has been abolished. Even on crab boats.

      The goal was 350k lbs. Once they hit that the crew has hit their contract in my opinion, to just extend the work another week or 2 without any talk with the crew is just going to cause anger.

    For 10 years I was a deckhand in Australia on a spanner crab boat. Backbreaking work.
    But the trip is over when the captain says it’s over and if anyone was to mess with the trip the skip would make them do twice as much.
    This job isn’t for crybabies. By sabotaging bait and anything else you’re messing with the other guys livelihoods. We weren’t too polite with people messing with that.

    I’ve always admired Bill and his type of work ethic and personality. I’m an ex Army man myself and I’ve worked some damn hard jobs in my life, maybe not crab fishing hard but physically demanding work nonetheless. I have a lot of respect for a guy like Bill, he made it to the wheelhouse with hard work and he can’t stomach anything less than that from his guys. I’m that way myself and his language and attitude are just the way he conducts business. I’m not super warm and fuzzy either. I have seen he has a soft spot for trying to help though.

      He's out there to make money for his boss, and if the Captain doesn't take it, the owner will find someone who will. That's a whole lot of money! Same with the crew. You don't want to stay out and fish, you know the deal when you get hired. There's plenty of people who would stay.

      you haven't even crab fished at all so I would shut up about it, and hey when your captain of a crab fishing boat and you want to get more quota and make more money, yea it's greedy but if you wanna make more money to pay your crewmembers it's worth the extra days. But if you have a crewman bitching about a couple extra days and making excuses to quit for a pathetic reason is not worth hiring that guy again because he's gonna flake out.

    Honestly while I get in business we all want to make money doesn’t matter what we do we all want to make money and I can understand and appreciate a boss who in land can be upset and say well this is the first I’ve heard of school or whatever and say I don’t care what your plans are but even at that there’s a fine line too where a boss can not tell you what you can or can not do outside of work hours on your own free time but on a boat like this you hire people on for a set time and while you can kinda be a little upset with some one saying something about school last minute but I also think you should talk with the crew before agreeing on taking on more quota if it extends the trip because it’s not like they can just quit they are stuck on a boat in the middle of the Bering sea so they have no way off

      That's what I thought, if you've told the crew that you've hit your 350k quota and they're all getting hyped to go home after pulling the current string in, then you decide without consideration for their plans that you're going to do 65k more and they aren't happy that a bad choice by the captain, consult the crew before essentially forcing them to work because they're the ones in the freezing cold not in a warm wheelhouse

They reached their quota, the crew completed the task they signed up for, the cap was the one who went behind their backs to extend the trip at the last possible second and what do you know it clashes with the plans made by the crew.

That is like a store manager telling a district manager no. You just don't do that. Plus, these guys should have figured that until the last legal day of the season, they should expect to stay on the water.
