Akane Higurashi/Hari - Surrender

  • The second Mai-HiME AMV (yes I’m doing these for the other major characters too) goes to Akane Higurashi, who can’t seem to catch a break regardless of what counterpart or universe she’s in. With only one real fight before being curbstomped immediately after, her potential is somewhat wasted (in the anime), but still advances the plot in a few key ways. Her defeat shows what the HiME are risking when fighting and if they lose, as well as establishing Miyu Greer’s true nature and how much of a threat the Searrs Foundation poses. Seeing her breakdown as her lover: Kazuya, fades away is absolutely soul-crushing, despite only seeing the two for around a third of the series before being taken down. From what little we see of Akane in action, she’s definitely skilled and her CHILD: Hari, is absolutely busted, manipulating wind currents and having a turbine on its chest that turns any enemy into mince meat. She has a much better showing in the manga adaptation, keeping her powers until the end, intercepting an attack that would have killed all of Fuuka Academy’s students, and beating the Three Scale Sisters with ease (HiME that were working under Haruka Suzushiro, who has powers here unlike her anime counterpart). Both of her actresses from the dubs (Junko Iwao and Morgan Partridge) do a good job with what they were given. It’s just a shame that she didn’t get her just due in the anime.

Akane's Harry and Tonfa were my 2nd favorite Child and Element next to Mai's. Albeit brief, Akane's conflict brought up a significant turnaround in My-HiME's story.

My favorite HiME, and probably the most tragic damsel. Unfortunately, out of Akane, the plot made an example of the consequences that ensures if a HiME lost her 'important person'. And unfortunately, dear Akane had little screen time.
Also, I adore her because she's voiced by the legendary Junko Iwao (Tomoya in Cardcaptors, Pai Chan in Virtua Fighter 1&2, the terrifying Ophelia in Romeo x Juliet, etc).

It’s a shame that Akane drew the short straw in that regard (thankfully the manga is much more kind to her). Granted, Hari’s already an absolutely busted ability and with Midori also using wind as part of her powers, it would have been superfluous to have another wind-user.
If anything, her defeat sets up the Searrs Foundation as a credible threat (kind of), I just wish she lasted more than eight episodes and had more than one fight.
Nao Yuuki is my personal favorite HiME, alongside Natsuki and Midori.

The cute devil-eyed redhead who might be a nod to Venom? Oh yea, Nao Yuuki is another favorite of mine!

Huh, interesting. The story, characters, and creatures seem interesting enough that is worth a watch.
