Either way why does he thinks he's entitled to some kind of respect? If I go to Nigeria i'm not thinking about how the blacks are gonna call me. These black people think like whole world owes them something, croats do not
@Curb Cooler for someone who calls others "ignarnt" you surely are ignorant about the language you use. Learn how to write before trying to judge others about ignorance.
My wife is Croatian 🇭🇷 from Zagreb. I am African American from Florida. The only reason I got stared at was because I'm sure they never really see black people. They are super interested! I love Burek!
@@Naturalwanders no, I'm still In florida for now. I plan to move there once I hit my first million with crypto which I'm pretty close to. You living there or are you from the states too?
As a local i'm very pleased to hear you liked you stay including your good experiences with out people. Yes, Croats are predominantly friendly and sociable, also very keen to learn about different people's cultures, ways of life, experiences etc. We're also usually here to help and give some good advices when needed to the foreigners but also to socialise with them. When it comes to racism for the most part of our history this was never real issue or problem in Croatia! One fun fact from the history to add here that is related to this topic: once powerful The Republic of Dubrovnik, nowadays part of Croatia, was actually first in Europe to abolish slave trade on it's territory! That was in ancient 15th century, more precisely in 1416.! That was several centuries before Great Britain and US that had started abolishing it yet at the beginning of 19the century! Also one interesting fact: that same republic has been the world's first country to recognize then new USA as a sovereign nation! Kind regards from Croatia!
@@fapmashina1 wow!! This is incredible information that I never would've known. I definitely felt the curious energy when speaking with the locals and I loved that. Dubrovnik's history is extremely interesting and it's great to hear about the racial history there. So much good info. Thanks my friend. Can't wait to visit your beautiful country again!
@@Naturalwanders I'm very glad that you liked my historical background of Dubrovnik and our country in general. Dear friend you're always welcome to our country!
Trust me my man, N- word is not in our vocabulary as we have a croatian one which is translated from blackman- crnac. Comes out of crn- meaning black. Its not rude its just a word.
Very interesting to see your insight of my country. Being Dalmatian myself, love to hear people opinion of Split, Dubrovnik etc..as we,Dalmatians, are only people who's dogs are more popular and better known than us,people😁
@Darko Ulmer "kmica" is not derogatory, it's just a regular word for "darkness" or "night" in 1/3 of the country that speaks Kajkavian dialect. Some might use it as derogatory just out of trying to be cool, but they're just being stupid.
@@Naturalwanders there is a derogatory word for black people but I have never heard it used in real life. The word is "crnčuga". It is similar to the word "crnac" which is just a regular non derogatory word for a black person. The only place I have ever seen the word used is like in ttanslations of american comics, and it is always used by bad characters so it really does give the impression that that word is not to be used.
Love this! Black American girl here moving to Dubrovnik in May for a job! Spent a few weeks there last summer and found the people to be very warm. I definitely look forward to exploring more of the country. Glad you had a good time :)
If the old dude on the market was 70 i doubt he knows the n word i bet he was gonna say something in croatian because that word is really only american and the new generations know it as a no no word internet told us not to say. There was no history with black people in our country and the older generations do not use the n word in their normal conversations because it has no meaning to them. Croatian people (older gen) have more prejudice towards Serbian people for example because of the war 20 or smth years ago that happened and took the lives of their loved ones who fought. Ofcourse there are always stupid people no matter what part of the world u are in but what im trying to say its not in the norm around here to judge black or asian or indian or whatever because we have no personal history, and at the same time it is the reason most often people stare when seeing people with different skin colours irl and not in movies.
Okay I really appreciate it insight! I figured that people are just starting out of curiosity and no malice which I've gotten used to when traveling further east. But I also understand that there's little to no racial history with black people. I really appreciate your perspective and insight on this. I'm curious about the history with Serbians though. I'll have to do some research on that! Thanks for watching!
@@Naturalwanders Truth be told we find other races exotic. As for Serbo-Croatian relationship I always describe it as divorced couple that sometimes sleep together.
@@Naturalwanders Well we argue a lot and about everything. In the 90's we had a war. We can't live in a same country since we are like two magnets of the same pole. We are both similar and different. Maybe if we showed more understanding and respect to each other like normal Croats and Serbs do, things would be better between our two countries. I do understand that people who lost someone in the war hate. But I can't understand how can someone hate entire nation. I've met both good and bad Serbs and both good and bad Croats. There are good and bad people in every nation. I can't hate all Serbs even if I lost everything in the war. I haven't met all Serbs so I can't hate entire nation.
@@Naturalwanders If you have a feeling that people are watching you, it’s because they’re not used to seeing black people There are 21 counties in Croatia and on average when you include all black residents (including foreign students) the average is maybe 2-3 per county, but mostly everything is reduced to Zagreb and during the summer to the coast in the rest of Croatia black is really exotic worth watching and studying (without any insult) Serbo-Croatian relationship is like a very bad marriage concluded too quickly and by agreement of foreign powers Mostly for you as a foreigner it is enough to know a few things ordinary people don't care, while politicians incite mistrust and violence because attention is drawn to the "external enemy" while they steal their own people
Oh you're absolutely going to love it! I hope this will help you a bit and let me know if you have any questions when it's gonna come around! Thanks for watching

Well I'm Croatian and my wife is black, we live here in Croatia for 3 years now, she is fluent in Croatian and say that she never experienced something racist or been treated bad because of her skin colour, ofc ppl sometime stare in her not because they are racist simply because here in Croatia ain't much black ppl so she looks exotic. No racism for sure, only curiosity. 99.99% ppl here are white, mostly only tourists are diverse. So naturally ppl are curious, especially older ones. I know 5-6 African football players, 1 African-american girl student and 1 kid, all who live here for years - and they'd all tell you they get treated better than the rest of us. Glad you had a good time!
Wanna know more? About 10k Roma live in my area of 100k. They make up 1/3 of ALL unemployed people. Families have an average of 6 children, for which ONLY THEY get paid - that's their source of income. Last year, only 3 Roma in the entire county graduated from high school. The perpetrators of 70 percent of ALL criminal acts are members of the Roma community. In few of the 12 settlements in my area, 12-year-old boys walk around armed with pistols and go to rob neighboring villages. The police don't go there anymore. There's not a lot of black people living in Croatia. Until I was 18 I probably saw like five black people tops in my life. And apart from one girl, they were all tourists. So people mostly stare because they're curious.
To be honest, I never really paid that much attention to the color of any person's skin... I have a friend whose parents came from India to Croatia, and I never really focused on the color of his skin, because we're all humans at the end of the day, you just have to be a decent human being and treat everyone with respect (as long as they treat you with respect obviously). I'm glad that you had a great time in my country, much love dude.
I am glad that you liked croatia. I think the stares were out of curiosity. Even though I am a croatian living in Vienna I am always happy to see people of other races (Black, Asian,...) because although we are all humans and have the same desires it's exciting to see the differences even if they are just on the outside. The most croatians are very openminded and welcoming. About the food: next time taste homemade food. It's much better than in the restaurants and the croatian women love to cook for their guests. They take very much pride in that.

Can I just tell you I’m traveling here in the next couple of weeks and I was extremely nervous. But after seeing your vlog I am feeling much more At ease! Thank you
I’m currently here, day 2. I’m Croatian living in US and my boyfriend is light skin. Yesterday we had a guy saying ‘what the fuck is this city coming to’ while angry looking and walking towards us. Today another guy said ‘move it you fat fuck’ to my boyfriend. I called him out then he apologized. I hate coming here honestly. We left the city and went home. Our day was ruined and I got so much anxiety walking around when everyone is starring and giggling.
In the 1940s when WW2 was happening, the head coach of the national boxing team of Croatia was a black American, Jimmy Lyggett. We also had black players in our national football team, the most famous one being Eduardo Da Silva, who is a fan favorite and one of the all time top scorers. There also was a small BLM protest in Zagreb after the George Flyod thing. There is also the Fresh Island Festival at Zrće beach which is mostly attended by black people from the UK and the rest of Europe (google the aftermovies of the event). Odilon Singbo is a black catholic priest who is active in Croatia, he mastered the Croatian language at a remarkable level and has received only positive comments (ruclips.net/video/7Nt6lj0fWN8/видео.html).

I feel so bad that you even have to make this video. The other day I watched a girl rating her experience in Australia and anxiety she had when she had to show her natural hair. I felt so bad. What kind of society does that to you :/ I'm Croatian living in Australia and until coming here I never thought about the race. Growing up in Croatia you don't think about it. You are not white, you are Croatian, then European and then citizen of the world. It messes up with my head that here (Australia) people judge me for my "whiteness" when I don't feel that at all. I'm glad you had a positive experience in Croatia. All the looks are curiosity probably :) btw we don't have the n word. I knew the word from American music but learned its meaning maybe a couple of years ago after some scandals in US happened. So if somebody says something you think it's insensitive, it's not from a bad place it's just that we don't understand the US historical context like you do since we are not Americans :) But we certainly love to learn new things! btw you made me sooooo homesick!
Hi Jelena! Yea it's unfortunate that it's even a thing to think about when traveling around the world. But it's the same way in the USA. I'm concerned about going to neighboring states because of my race, so you can imagine the concern of going overseas. I'm happy that you didn't have to think about race growing up. When I take a trip and I don't have to think about, I feel a bit lighter. It happens every now and then. The stares don't bother me because i know they're coming from that place of curiosity like you said. I really appreciate your thoughtful comments and for watching. I hope you get to come home soon 🏡 I definitely plan to return to your home when the world starts spinning again. Thank you my friend 😊
Why whould anyone want to be lighter? Ha ha people in Croatia, including me of course, are frying in the sun to get darker. We find it very beautifull you know. And yes, two years ago I saw a black girl in my small town (first time in real life not on tv) and I stared like a stupid cow. I did not mean to be rude but she was sooo beautiful I couldnt help myself. Now I regret it, she probably thought I was a racist.

Oh there are so many little but unique places that blow mind even to us croatians sometimes (like Rastoke village) that should be in my opinion credited more than some standard tourist locations. Btw when we find a job in a restaurant or a good take out bar, we're usually suposed to memorize all the dishes because it is very common for people to ask what are they going to eat xD I dunno why, it is like a tradition here. I love watching your Fro Reviews ☺️ I recently added Croatia to my summer bucket list and found this video was extremely helpful. I’m trying to decide between Dubrovnik, Split and Rijeka. Is there any particular city you would recommend to a digital nomad visiting for a month?
Hey I really appreciate you! You're gonna absolutely love Croatia. For a month I'd say Split since it's more centrally located in the country. You can take a quick trip to dubrovnik or Zagreb from there. It's probably the most youthful and lively city and dubrovnik is a bit too touristy for me to stay for weeks. Idk about Rijeka but that might be a good move too. I'm glad you found this helpful and I hope you have an amazing trip!

croatians aren't racist towards black people. why? because we have like 0.01% blacks here lol. we never colonized africa, we never enslaved anyone. throughout history we rarely even saw any blacks around. when Croatia was in communistic federation called Yugoslavia, our leader made many diplomatic friendships from Africa. due to this friendship, africans gained access to our universities. some stayed and married here. our leader made sure that we be open to foreigners of different color. we do however have our own reasons for bigotry towards some nations, neighbors of the same skin so to say, because of historical disputes, wars, etc. another "racism" that could be found in croatia is racism towards Romas due to their rowdy communities that cause trouble in various ways. some decades ago, it was bigotry against Turks, whose ancestors were Ottomans, notorious in Europe for their relentless war escapades, pillaging, turkification of slavs etc. but now we are friendly nations, especially since entrance in EU and NATO. what I wanted to say... we have no reason to be rasict towards blacks. they have never done us any harm. we just rarely see dark colored people, so we cannot help but stare. also, i want to comment on that part when you talked to a dude and he was talking about the situation in America, brutality against the blacks etc.... and he slipped the n word. you need to know that croatian language does not have a derogatory term for a black person. we do have various nicknames, but none are malicious. him using the n word was probably just copying what he hears in movies and how other african americans address each other in media. you need to know that european semantics work on a whole different level than you guys. like, we use negro as a colloquial for something black. americans would scream racist, but that word is very normal for us. that word is rooted in many languages, dialects, being foremostly a latin word, and stayed almost unchanged in Italian, dalmatian, roman, spanish, french... a cookie and candy company is called negro. there's a country called Montenegro. negro was never used in the racist context in europe. spanish call black people, and this is literal translation, negrito. we do not use it when speaking english, since the semantics and connotation is entirely different, but I don't blame the guy for the slip up, being bilingual and all.
Croatian people belong to the group of Slavic tribes which came in 7th century to Europe, after the fall of Roman empire. We never had slaves. In fact: Slavic in other languages translates as "Slave" but in ours it means "Glory". The reason behind is, Slavic nations were often slaves, cause they did not convert to Christianity immidiately. You were in Dubrovnik, which at one point was a state, and their flag has a Latin word Libertas (Freedom). Perhaps you should have taken another tour, insted of Games of Thrones. Most important, we (as in all Slavic nations) never participated in any kind of colonization. That is the reason why you dont see so many black people. And that is the reason why did I, 25 years ago when I saw a black man, sad to my friend: "This man deffinatly use too much tanning of skin". And he said to me:"Are you serious? He is a black person". Got it :, I did not recognize that black person was in front of me.
Croats are profound Catholics. They have a lot of missionaries that work in Africa among heavily underdeveloped people, preaching, establishing elementary schools and teaching people useful crafts. Therefore, we have encoded in our brains: we are all equal brothers and sisters in Jesus. The older and midlife generation use the word "Black" and not Afroamerican, because it was normal back then in their youth. That was the generation for whome,in their childhood, seeing the black person "live" was wow, some kind of nice surprise. They were than calling parents and friends "look, the blackman". Racism is absent in Croatia because of very strong Catholicism among Croats. Also, the older and midlife generation grew on cinematography from 70s (Coffee 😎 ...) and 80s that popularized black community. They also saw TV series Roots (Kunta Kinte etc.), which made them more senzibilized. One can't stay indifferent. There are some things that made Croats feel empathy with black people, because of some historical similarities. Croats were subjugated people. Suffered oppression remains in memory of people, even few generations later. Croats were not the colonizers, nor the big landowners nor tycoons, but just ordinary people who came in New World to do the heavy physical work. Therefore there is no supremacist attitude. While as part of the country that was the part of the Non-aligned movement (especially in decades of decolonization, 60s, 70s) many students from the Third World came to study in Croatia (mostly Zagreb), many were blackmen. Yeaa I'd say Split is great if you're looking for a more youthful crowd and nightlife near the water. Dubrovnik i believe it's much more expensive and touristy though. @@mylifemyjourney1 Istria is also really good if you want to take a look at it, but i think its also the most expensive. I would recommend the area around town of Poreč, since my friends bought a house there not long ago for a okay price. Plus from Istria you only need like half an hour to Slovenia an hour to Italy, and hour and half to Austria, so when Croatia, gets into Schengen you can freely make trips to those countries not worrying about borders and papers.
@@Ivan-gp4tr ....you think, it is a great area for renovation too? Btw, thanks for the great info did not know it was close all those bordering countries.

Also you can do whatever you want with the garden. Im not very good with English, sorry, . So i dont know if you mean renovation like that. Most of the houses that you can buy there are like that, fully built but with nothing inside. Or you can look into the houses in the center of Poreč, they are those old looking Roman houses, but i know for a fact they cost a lot.
Hey man! I liked your comments and I hope you spent some good time in Croatia. Even during Covid19 era while everyone is stressed. Still, don't take staring too seriously - it's not out of hatered or racism but of curiousity. As you've might noticed Croatia is probably the "whitest" country on Earth so people here, even young, aren't used to see black person (or any other colour) besides tourists. Although we have few afro-croatians, actually mixed race, who are locals (most beautiful people ever - it is good to mix genetic pools) people are somewhat excited to see exotic race and are happy to be in contact with you. You can take it like a "positive racism" if such thing exists. My black friend from South Africa was thrilled here. Handsome young man was exposed to "racism" from our female citizens who were more than interested in him. He spent some really nice time here. So as long as you behave politely nobody will really care for your skin color, or your ancestry, definitely you won't experience racist and supremacist behaviour - more likely you'd be treated with respect and maybe even more attention than other "white" tourists. Have a good time wherever you are. Hope you stay healthy and happy and hope you'd visit Croatia once again.
Yess even during stressed times, your country is an incredible one to visit. I definitely never felt any hatred in the stares. All curiosity and I take no issue at all with it. I felt the utmost respect from everyone and I really enjoyed the people in Croatia more than anything else. And that's saying a lot because the nature is incredible! Thank you for watching my friend and I really appreciate your thoughtful comments!
I once seen a group of mostly black guys on Hvar in Croatia. Sort of caught myself looking at them as I was passing by and one of them noticed and was trying to look away, looking scared I felt. Wondered what he heard of us to appear that way.. I still kinda feel bad about it, even tho I did nothing but probably just starred like an idiot. Think they were French
Ahh misunderstandings happen my friend. You shouldn't feel bad about that natural reaction of curiosity. But you'll also know a bit more for the next time that happens. Thanks for sharing that and being vulnerable with me my friend
I am black guy and enjoy when people stare at me,🤗😆it kind of being special sometime.. Back home i used to stare at white people a lot when they visited my country since they were few and luck to meet them i even went one step further to converse with them. So its normal human to have curiousity.
Btw, people here don't say N to insult black person. Some people say it because we watch a lot of American movies and those are not synched. And when we see and hear that black people call each others N, we just adopt that expression as it is. Not to insult but because we got used to it. And when there's no black people around, we kinda don't care if someone will hear us saying that word. We are aware that it's not accepted in USA for white person to call black person a N though. So that's why he corrected himself.

@@Naturalwanders there is a derogatory word for black people but I have never heard it used in real life. The word is "crnčuga".

There are 21 counties in Croatia and on average when you include all black residents (including foreign students) the average is maybe 2-3 per county, but mostly everything is reduced to Zagreb and during the summer to the coast
in the rest of Croatia black is really exotic worth watching and studying (without any insult)
Serbo-Croatian relationship is like a very bad marriage

I hope you get to come home soon 🏡
I definitely plan to return to your home when the world starts spinning again.
@@Ally2018. haha I appreciate you saying that! Yea you never know. Maybe she also understands that you stared out of curiosity like I do nowadays. No need to regret those natural reflexes though. That's just us learning about the world. Thank you for sharing your perspective and thoughtful comments my friend!

Luis Ibanez is white lol, Sammir yes, and Fernandes, many others, but Luis Ibanez lol, he is small white dude that is dark from the sun litterally lol, he is not black.

My man! I'm a Hispanic born and raised from Brooklyn. But 7 years ago I decided to just pack up and leave! so, I headed to Belgium ! And yeah I deal with alot of micro aggressions and profiling and deep down it's super scary 3 different languages that I still cant barely speak lol. But ladies are so beautiful and truly amazing inside. It's why I'm still here.

Had to come here before I embark on my trip, glad to here the good reviews particularly from a black guy ❤❤❤❤
Croatia is a small country by population & there is so much space around that results in various creative ideas like different kinds of bars or museums! Or even bakery! (Bread club Zagreb- it looks like a night bar). Sometimes it feels like a competition among ourselves. PS your t-shirt is awesome 👌
I've been to Croatia many times! I was living in Europe from April 2012 - May 2015 and I agree with everything you've said. I haven't been to southern Croatia though. I spent my time in Rijeka and Opatija. Both are smaller seaside towns and there were NO black folks! I had a damn good time will always return. Keep doing your thing brother. I may steal your "Fro-rating scale". I'll definitely credit you for it.

In regards to food, you need to visit the right places :P
Michellin star places are nice and all... but for best local food you need to visit random small restaurants in the middle of nowhere. :P

Thx for this review. I'll be in Croatia in a few weeks and this helps.
Thank you my friend! I'm glad you find this helpful and I appreciate you watching
I will be embarking on a solo trip to Croatia June 2023 after failing to secure a travel buddy. As a African American woman I’m skeptical on how I will be perceived. However, I look forward to my vacation and historic sightseeing of Dubrovnik, Hvar and Split/Trogir.
Yes I understand the skepticism and I'll say from my experience I would feel comfortable traveling there alone the next time! I would love to hear your experience after your travels. It's such a wonderful country with open people so I think you'll have even more authentic local experiences while solo traveling. Good luck with your wandering!
Very nice review , thank you for sharing your positive vibes from and for my country and yes we are curious, welcoming and friendly (as i see you have been explained :) ), but idots as you know you can find everywhere :) If you had a toure in Dubrovnik maybe you have been told that they were among the first who banned slavery 1416. Croatian people might speak English to get by but many of them are not aware of the offensiveness of the words they are using...or the difference between informal and formal English language....and yes they do stare a lot at all the strangers
We dont shame people for race, religion etc. Its just rare to see black people in croatia because we're not too popular. We just stare because we never see you guys or we admire your beauty, diffrences. Im glad you find Croatia a friendly place❤

Im from croatia and my best friend is black..and i love black people, for me we are all the same..😊
croatians aren't racist towards black people. why? because we have like 0.01% blacks here lol. we never colonized africa, we never enslaved anyone. throughout history we rarely even saw any blacks around. when Croatia was in communistic federation called Yugoslavia, our leader made many diplomatic friendships from Africa. due to this friendship, africans gained access to our universities. some stayed and married here. our leader made sure that we be open to foreigners of different color.
we do however have our own reasons for bigotry towards some nations, neighbors of the same skin so to say, because of historical disputes, wars, etc. another "racism" that could be found in croatia is racism towards Romas due to their rowdy communities that cause trouble in various ways. some decades ago, it was bigotry against Turks, whose ancestors were Ottomans, notorious in Europe for their relentless war escapades, pillaging, turkification of slavs etc. but now we are friendly nations, especially since entrance in EU and NATO.
what I wanted to say... we have no reason to be rasict towards blacks. they have never done us any harm. we just rarely see dark colored people, so we cannot help but stare.
also, i want to comment on that part when you talked to a dude and he was talking about the situation in America, brutality against the blacks etc.... and he slipped the n word. you need to know that croatian language does not have a derogatory term for a black person. we do have various nicknames, but none are malicious. him using the n word was probably just copying what he hears in movies and how other african americans address each other in media. you need to know that european semantics work on a whole different level than you guys. like, we use negro as a colloquial for something black. americans would scream racist, but that word is very normal for us. that word is rooted in many languages, dialects, being foremostly a latin word, and stayed almost unchanged in Italian, dalmatian, roman, spanish, french... a cookie and candy company is called negro. there's a country called Montenegro. negro was never used in the racist context in europe. spanish call black people, and this is literal translation, negrito. we do not use it when speaking english, since the semantics and connotation is entirely different, but I don't blame the guy for the slip up, being bilingual and all.
They enjoyed equal status among local students. Also, many Croatian experts went to work in the Third world on equal terms with locals.
Being black and from the USA, the best combination for blackperson in Croatia. Americans guests have excellent reputation, nice behaviour, very good tippers, especially blackmen.😎
Trivia: there is a phrase in Croatian "raditi kao crnac" ("to work like a blackman"), meaning to work hard and exhausting (usually physical) work, and the verb "crnčiti", literary meaning "to blacken", with the same meaning as the phrase above.

Looking to buy property in Croatia for my retirement Cali is too expensive for me...any idea where near the coast tourist area?
Yeaa I'd say Split is great if you're looking for a more youthful crowd and nightlife near the water. Dubrovnik i believe it's much more expensive and touristy though. Zagreb isn't very close to the sea. But those are the most touristy cities i visited. I've Zadar is very nice and by the sea as well. Thank you for watching!
@@Naturalwanders ....I was looking into Split and the housing market seem reasonable price by the coast area. Thx for the info.
@@mylifemyjourney1 Well, the house my friends bought was fully built, on the outside they only coloured it how they wanted but inside they bought all the furniture for the rooms and also coloured it.
Thanks for the thoughts. That definitely helps to understand the perspective more
