Can you flip a broken MacBook for profit without fixing it at all?

  • I make a lot of videos about restoring broken MacBooks or getting good deals on used MacBooks, but sometimes you come across a Mac that just doesn't make sense to repair. The time, money, or the issue itself just isn't worth fixing. In this video I want to see if you can turn this into a profitable situation by selling the parts rather than repairing the MacBook at all....

    I work for Rossmann Repair Group, and we try to steer people away from these models because these MacBooks just die out of nowhere, which is probably in the email you got. It is just not worth it to repair, when you could put your money towards a used MacBook with the things that we have seen happen with the machine.

    I must say how much I enjoy your videos. Even at the grand age of 66 and only partially sighted, I am so tempted to buy a broken laptop and try to repair it.
    Technology today fascinates me and it makes me depressed that I am from an older generation where this stuff was never taught as it didn't exist! What I know today is by self teaching. At the moment I am learning how to operate y new imac air that cost UK £1600. 8GB 512 RAM.
    It ha a facility for partially sighted people like myself. To see anything I have to hold a torch inmy lips as I type.

    I can’t tell you how many MacBooks I run into that people just discard, that need a bit of tinder loving care. Not just MacBooks but iMacs as well. Many people still believe that once their computers start to seem a bit slower they’re getting old or broken. I can usually clean up a MacBook, wipe it, install a clean OS, and make it more than useful for the average person. I can take an iMac usually up to about 7 years old, put in an SSD and bump it to 16 GB of RAM and turn it into a powerful workstation for a student who isn’t rolling in cash. I do this to get the old machines out of client computer rooms and closets but seldom charge people for them.

    I have done this many times. I buy them this way with liquid damage but a good display and sometimes I can even bring the logicboard to life because twice now have I found little bugs inside the laptop that cause it to short, so after a good cleaning with 99% rubbing alcohol, they generally come back to life. The fastest-selling parts are currently Macbook Air 2013-2017 screens. I have two crates full of top quality screens, sometimes I used them for a customer when they dropped theirs and prices are great. I am surprised you paid 300 for that broken Macbook. If a MacBook is broken I never pay more than half of that or I offer them a trade up.

Selling things on ebay, shipping them, and taking a chance that a buyer will return it (or even scam you) is not worth $100 profit.. I took it to the store where I bought it and they told me that the motherboard is broken and the fee for changing it is 700-900 dollars.
    With that money im not going to buy another MacBook Pro, but, I can easily put some bucks in top of that and buy one of those smaller band new MacBook Air (I know is not the same, but at least is a working computer).
    Do you think there is another workaround? do you think it worth fixing it?

    Don't you have consumer law in the US? :-)
    I've had two or three of these repaired by Apple here in Sweden under consumer law due to this problem. Twice they replaced 2015s for new 2016s and the third device they replaced the logic board & top-case on (I later got the screen replaced for free aswell due to the normal screen lamination issue)

    • @Michael-zn2jc
      @Michael-zn2jc 4 года назад

      Stockholms Oskar nope. No consumer law in the US. The only way to get Apple to repair something free is to talk on the phone for hours and having spent hours researching and reviewing the terms and conditions, limited warranty, etc. They’ll often tell you they can’t do anything but I’ve found you can’t just trust that one person. I had to speak to 9 different advisors before one of them agreed to repair my Apple Watch with swollen battery (screen had popped off). It took me 5 hours on the phone but they fixed it. It was a known issue so I’m sure with a MacBook it’ll be a lot more difficult.

    • @Michael-zn2jc
      @Michael-zn2jc 4 года назад +1

      Stockholms Oskar we have 1 year limited warranty which basically doesn’t cover anything. They’ll basically try to blame you for whatever issue you have. I’ve had to read the document that shows what the warranty applies to, over the phone to them to have them repair things. The worst part is I’ve noticed they either give you a refurbished product or part and I’ve always had issues. I love Apple products but as a company I hate them. In the US, we have Best Buy stores and their warranty is so much more pleasing. If it doesn’t work you just take it to the store. If it’s like a vacuum, they’ll refund you (store credit) or give you a new one (your choice). If it’s a TV they’ll attempt to repair. I’ve had a TV where they tried replacing all the parts and it turned out to be the black light which is something they don’t replace. They gave me the credit and I was able to chose a new tv, I was able to pay the difference and warranty and upgrade to an OLED tv. In my opinion I think that’s how warranty should be.

    Why are you selling your VEGA 20 i7 macbook pro?

    I got a destroyed a1502 MacBook Pro from a recycling center. The screen is broken and it looks like someone snapped the screen back because the hinges are destroyed. I used a charger and a external monitor and it works, it’s just still registered to someone’s Apple ID. Dose anyone know if I can sell it as a whole for parts for would it be a better option to take out the motherboard and just sell that? I thought if I take out the ssd the board it would no longer be attached to the account. Those motherboards are going for over $150 and I would love to get that money. Can anyone give me some advice?

    A lot of things can be flipped, and parts can be a goldmine 🤪

    Wasn't an option to use the 12" Macbook with usb-c drive. Yes, it won't be very portable but still could be working solution to the died ssd problem.

    Trying this out now! Just bought a broken 2015 MBP 13" that doesn't boot. I'll update when I sell everything in case anyone else is planning on doing this.

      Update 1: It boots! It had no OS, so I reinstalled El Capitan on the drive and it's fully functional! The only problem is the battery is not being recognized by the computer, and upon closer inspection it's a 3rd party battery. Planning on ordering a new battery then flipping it!

    did you at least try to reflow the logic board? and I'm skeptical that the repair advocate can't repair this. (rossman)

    I can't understand how they buy these for parts. the stuff inside of it are all glued. I can't see somebody disassembling them and get rid of LCD screen like we do on regular notebooks easily.

    I'm pretty sure Louis Rossmann doesn't do drive repairs because he doesn't want to risk destroying people's important data.

      Rossmann Repair Group does do data recoveries, we don't repair drives. For this model, there's one year where the CPU dies, and we would not be able to recover anything. We recommend just staying away from the 12" MacBook at all costs.

      @@hihi217 I recommend that people should stay away from you. You are a group of Apple's cynical haters. I have been using MB12 for three years, for many hours a day and this is the best laptop I have had in my life.
