FIRST LOOK: Praga Bohema - £1.1m, GT-R Engined Lightweight | Top Gear

- Опубликовано: 28 июн 2024
- Europe’s supercars are mainly Italian, German, and British… but another nation is in on the action. From the land that brought you Skoda, meet Czechia’s fastest export: the Praga Bohema. It’s not mucking about, is it?
The all-carbon fibre two-seater is not a road-going version of Praga’s R1R racing car. Oh no. The R1R makes do a with a willing Renault engine good for 365bhp. The Bohema doesn’t share components with the racer. And courtesy of a Nissan GT-R engine, it’s got 700bhp.
The engineers say they’re simply not interested in an irrelevant big top speed number, when all the fun is had getting the Bohema through the corners as quickly as physics allows. Over 900kg of downforce ought to help there. That insectile body is fully carbon fibre and obsessed with channelling air.
There’s no active aero though: an airbrake or adjustable flaps would need a heavy hydraulic system, which offends the sub-1000kg Praga’s weight-shedding ethos. There is, however, full air-con and a state of the art touchscreen inside. Sort of.
Breathe in, and join Top Gear magazine’s Ollie Kew in the Bohema’s teeny cockpit for an in-depth tour of what this newest pretender to the hypercar crown has to offer, in return for its £1.1million price tag.

hearing that praga rather makes a car lighter than putting in lots of heavy technology, makes me think that they are the new lotus from years back
Adding power makes a car fast, removing weight makes a car fun...
Apparently the first gen 700kg lotus Elise is some of most fun you can have in a car, even though they have less than 200hp.
Colin Chapman motto “simplify, then add lightness”. So adding power makes you faster on the straights. Subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere. Consequently they need to be careful just adding batteries, battery density is key to limit weight. I have the Mini SE, awesome on U.K. A and definitely B roads.
How many million pound supercars did lotus sell back then?
@@jamesgaskin7757 lotus cortina Around 7000 made, 1963 to 1965 last sold for £140,000 recently but of course the latest 2022 Lotus Emira and soon ELETRE. However look what Porsche has done brought into Rimac for the Rimac Nevera Review: $2 Million Electric Supercar and put Rimac in charge of Bugatti
I'd always choose weight rather than grunt - I drove a V6 Clio back to back with my 5 Turbo back in the day - It was like driving a fast Elephant.....
I wish people knew that Czechia and "Chechnya" are not the same thing
What is the difference?
@@ButterflyEnte Chechnya went through a war not long ago. It made me think of Ramzan Kadyrov.
It's why I had to double check the difference, because I would've been surprised to see a car like this come out of Chechnya
@@ButterflyEnte Chechnya is a part of Russia, 2600kms away form Czechia BRUH
@@AntsCzech I‘ve looked up the names in my mother language, know the difference now. Such mistake shouldn’t happen from such a large channel.
He pronounced it correctly, didn't he?
As a Czech guy, I delight in seeing a wicked hypercar from CZE!
"wicked" is an understatement......
As a Slovakian, I feel jelaous 🥲
@@pappi187 dont be it was made by a slovak designer 😉
as a german i can see

I love that they used an engine you can get a hold on for the foreseeable future. You can get it worked on just about anywhere in the world. Great choice. It’s the biggest problem with most super/hyper cars.
It’s a seven-figure price tag … these clients don’t care about maintenance costs.
@@philanthropy244 True, maintenance costs are not a problem for clients, but given that Praga is a smaller manufacturer with limited support and locations (if any) internationally, should something go wrong, an owner wouldn't necessarily have to go through as much hassle to have a problem taken care of since the GT-R's engine is mass produced
I'd say the biggest problem are EVs which are racing fast for fraction of the price. For bragging rights cars like Model S Plaid or even GAC Hyper costs a tenth and are quicker
@@ciybersal9833 The Plaid isn't even in the same league. It does a 7:30 Nurburgring lap then has to go and have a lay down for several hours while it charges. This thing will probably be in the sub 7 minute range and do it lap after lap after lap after lap. Got to love the reliability of that Nissan Motor
@@ciybersal9833 comparing a Tesla to a Hypercar is the dumbest thing ever ! the Pagani Zonda is slower than a 911 gt3 and cost +10m$ more, but that's not why rich people buy these cars !
As a Czech, I have to appreciate that this is really good looking, good job Praga!
Its stunning.....👍👍
I am already in love with Czech girls. You are really trying to make me love your cars too.
👍
@@haereticus Yeah i live in Czech Republic on every Class is at least 2 pretty girls
Bro, I know how the Praga buses looked back in the times of Czechoslovakia. I wasn't even born at that time. Hearing about Praga making supercars, how they went from ugly busses to elegant cars just made me really surprised. Ať žije Česko 🇨🇿
I bet current joint Praga World Cup Championship winner, jimmer broadbean would love this car. Finally, a car worthy of his talents.
You beat me to this comment
...and funny thing is that this car also uses a GT-R engine so there's another good little bit of connection with Jimmer
Jimmy is getting better and the car is getting better, world domination bout to happen
Let's see how fast _this_ can raid the Nurburgring, huh?
The best part about using the VR38 is that power upgrades anywhere from a little bump to well over 2000hp are relatively affordable.
“Affordable” 😂😂😂
@@favianmadrid6345 no, seriously. An Omega 14 kit is ten grand in parts. And it will make 1350+/1100+ AT THE WHEELS.
@@spdcrzy Good luck fitting it in that thing though
@@poeticalvision I mean, it's already twin turbos. This actually has a lot more room than you think.
all the nissan gtr tuners when this comes out: instantly tune it to 2000 hp
Well done Praga and congratulations to Iain Litchfields team for the work on the project
You can tell the designers were not messing around with the look of this one what a beautiful creation 😍
that touch screen holder is truly an amazing idea and all manufacturers should do that
Aston Martin suggested that with the Valhalla concept, makes the whole dashboard a lot nicer as well
They do it in the VW up/Skoda citigo I think
@@olis_garage They don't.
Ikr. It's a truly brilliant idea. We don't need to deal with loads of buggy UI and UX when our current smartphones is more than enough to do the job.
The Praga Bohema looks absolutely stunning. The performance figures are impressive and the price is fairly competitive. Let's see if the Superior buyer agrees.
It really looks good indeed but in this era of EVs I'm afraid performance is pretty average. Check out the new GAC hyper which is a HyperCar at a fraction of the price and is quicker
@@ciybersal9833 You missed the whole point of weight...... EV's are fine but my god are they heavy.....
Brawa dla przyjaciół z Czech.
🏎️🏎️🏎️🇵🇱
Dzenkujemy kolesz 🤟
That steering wheel is the best ive seen, especially with those screen graphics, look soo good
The supercar game is officially over . An alpha 12 kit on this would be batshit!!
No need its a track car
This reminds me when Jon Olsson made a road legal Praga R1R and took it on a rally
The phone holder is the smartest move in history, in 20 years, every single infotainment system will be outdated, but with that holder, you can always put the most modern device available, given it is similar size to today's devices!
The Czechs also have Tatra, a true automotive pioneer in its time.
This is legit one of if not the most intriguing new vehicles I've seen in quite some time
Seen thecPraga in the Czech Republic as my misses is from there, its a mad looking car an one of the best engines around, and he's not lying as it sounds ungodly. This car could easily push 1200bhp if wanted. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but my word its amazing.
I know the Praga R1 is a dope race vehicle, watched the whole series this year again. Shoutout to Jimmy Broadbent and Gordie Mutch on their win this year
Watching a 2L engine car beat stuff like Lamborghini Huracan is fun 🙂
To je nádhera! Zlaté české ručičky.
Skutečně české...?
@@klmemamp5001 No alespoň design je český
@@equesviridis Dizajn je akurát slovenský a zbytok český :-)
I freaking love this. What a machine. Keeping it “simple”.
I’d love to buy one. If it was me, I’d order one in Broadbents livery, with hand painted “Praga” logos
Looks sick. If I had the money I would definitely buy one!
Would love to have the headlights as filled in laser LED instead of the 2 circles. Looks like a BAC Mono clone otherwise. But beautiful car 😍
This car looks absolutely stunning but I really dig this clever interior design, not bothering with some mostly janky infotainment system like other brands and just sticking with your smartphone is a great solution many brands should consider.
This Thing looks better then the AMG One and is 800 kg Lighter Goddamn. Mclaren and Ferrari has competition
Very nice. The front reminded me of something, but I couldn't remember what it was, until the end. It's the Mazda Furai.
That blue paint is incredible on that car. Love Praga.
Looks like a Pagani & Valkyrie fusion
That Ford GT at the back corner looks 😍😍😍😍😍
my Mini Cooper is 1100kg... its crazy how such a big looking wide car can be under a ton
New Berkeley bandit plans on 700kg
I’m not sure I’d get in and out of that too easily. At 50 years old I’m thinking is that my fault for not being very bendy anymore 😂
That’s the coolest car I’ve ever seen. I already know by looking at it that it goes for over a million at least
700hp for ~900kg with almost a tonne of downforce on tap at track cornering speeds is Group C stuff, let alone hypercar stuff. Can't wait to see it do runs at Goodwood FOS and then never be seen or heard-about ever again.
Gonna sit it the corner of someones garage sadly
Probably gonna do a production road legal car nürburgring record.
Having road cars that look like protype racers, you have gordan murray to thank for that with the rocket and caparo t1. There's gtr v6 engines can make 3,500hp with everything on them.
If all car manufacturers put such a nice dock for your mobile it means the problem is then the legality of touching it while driving. You can touch the cars touchscreen but you can't touch your phone
Lovely review . Just the right amount of info and we’ll shot. Love it.
best car that i saw in real life at Abudhabi this week, the aero is phenomenal
Looks like the ultimate track day car, light and nimble. Looks amazing!
Nice review Ollie, but I have a few notes 😉
👉 Czechia is pronounced with K in the middle 😉
👉 Technically Praga was developed in Slovakia, but overall it's Czechoslovak project
👉 Thanks for the history lesson, even most of the Czechs don't know about it
I had the opportunity to experience the passenger seat in a prototype and it's absolute beast of a car 😈
Aleš Jirásek's helmet was also nice content of the suitcase 😁
Chekia, I thought so. 👍 Do you like your country's new name? (assuming you're Czech)
@@divinasi0n it's not a new name, just another option. We are still Czech Republic :) I don't like it much (although it is faster to fill in forms 😁), because Czechia feels like a name for a region, while Czech Republic represents sovereign state
SHUT UP!!!!!! he says developed in Slovakia, you know what you need, learn how to listen!!!!!
@@divinasi0n the new name is BAD as you adapt a czech word to english (very poorly) instead of using the word Bohemia (in german Bömen) which has been around for over a 1000 years.
@@dominiksoukal well, Bohemia is technically name of the Boheiam region, while Czech republic/Czechia covers Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia ;)
I still love how praga racing hired mr shed man sim racer jimmy broadbent to make his dreams a reality. Its so awesome
First time I’ve heard of this car. Looks great
The cellphone integration is a fantastic idea. Fantastic car. Hope this car succeeds.
Worth every cent it's stunning and fast
Amazing cars🤯
I think we should have seen the complete scene of Ollie getting out of the car, I suspect the ending was the easy part. Especially for the age group who can generally afford one of these. I want to see Clarkson in this on TGT.
they gave it to captain snail
Love the long tail rear
Dude you absolutely murdered the pronunciation of Czechia
my words, I hate when they think we are a state in Russia....
@@AntsCzech You refuse Ramzan as a leader?!
😁
Beautiful, it's similar that I get when I see the pinnarello road bike ha, absolutely amazing.
Maybe, in future, it’s not the ferrari or lamborghini that comes to your mind first when you hear supersport, maybe it’s gonna be Praga.
Fantastic content.
That beautiful Diablo SE30.
Gorgeous. I like the styling way more than the Praga.
Ok I’m expecting a comparison review with this and the Aston Martin valkyrie next year at some point 🙏🏾
This looks like a child of a Ford GT and Apollo
i was thinking valkyrie and apollo
Or a nio ep9 nose taken to the extreme with some koenesigg and pagana inspiration tossed in to? 🤔
mclaren mp4 rear lights
Those carbonfiber buttons on the center console! 😍
That is the nicest car that I have ever seen. Great job Praga!!
This car is absolutely epic
What!? That's mad!
Shmee will have one on order already I reckon.
The reason car companies don't just forget touch screens and integrate people's smartphones is because in reality people want the screens in their cars to be vastly larger than their smartphones.
Go with a tablet then. Car touchscreens are sooo bad; colors, resolution, touch, response, the UI that's already outdated when the car is released. It's bad. Give me an iPad holder and an app and I will be kissing your feet
I love that it's the same colour used on the go karts
This is somehow the type of supercar like KTM X-bow GT-XR 👍
And the KTM use Audi inline-5 again, which is also one of my favourite engine.
As a Czech myself I feel definitely proud when i see what Praga is doing! Only wish we'd never agree on such an atrocious name as Czechia as the name of our beautiful country.
ale Česko říkáme běžně, proč ne potom Czechia? (nicméně on to přečetl jako Chechnia, čečensko...)
I was just thinking that it sounds beautiful.
Absolutely awesome nicely design.
SICK ride!
Never ever been a fan of these supercars / hypercars. but this looks amazing! kinda like a F50 front end
Nice car, there is a isofix system for babyseats? Thanks
The designer did a very good job;;what a super car
Simplesmente um dos veículos mais espetaculares que estão andando sobre o planeta Terra.
It looks really good 👍🏼
The interior is just perfect as a supercar , less is more 👌
Looks amazing
I would love to see a new proper Lotus "add lightness" car, modern Lotuses have gotten big and heavy with big heavy supercharged V6s...
You can have a lot of fun with a modern 1.5l turbo I3 if the car only weighs like 800kg...
Oh the SLS looks quintessential
Thanks for that top tip on hot tho close the door..........it was a real stumper!
You could never leave angrily. There's no storming off with a fitness circuit to negotiate.
Please tell me the name of the song used in the intro.
Makes getting in,sitting in and getting out a gt40 like getting in the back of a rolls Royce phantom
miss the old days of the review being done while driving the damn thing.
Now, imagine a Praga with 1200hp…
Impractical? A bit.
Wicked? Yes.
This is sick! I love it💙 Praga, thumbs up!
If I was a little more financially endowed I would be in the market for this beast, although Praga is the word for "Plague" in Portuguese.
Love that madly LMP racing car DNA on it
Considering what Praga is and what they're best at, I'm pretty sure half the world is bummed they didn't make a LMH racer, and the other half is relieved in the way that only someone who experiences a near miss from a bullet is.
More VR38 powered cars makes me happy because it mean more on the market for me to buy second hand to throw in my Q50 😂
If Roman is involved car is surely crash proof . Looks amazing and probably goes like crazy .
Lol you sounded like tiff needell in those first few moments there
Totally agree on the touch screens/phones comment.
All I'm hoping is that these supercars end up in games. It's the closest I'm getting to driving them.
I know I'm a bit late, but Top Gear ain't Top Gear without the awesome trio of Jeremy, James, and Richard. I had to leave. I'll go cry somewhere else. See ya.
We have the “hypercar” moniker, and I think we need something for exclusively track cars. It’s a bit amazing they developed this to drive on the road, but it’s obv a track car.
GTR heart.... this will be a classic. Will always be able to address any issues easily. 50 years from now some guy will go "Just had it on a dyno a week ago and it made 950whp"
This looks like the car version of the Yamaha R1 superbike
God bless Praga and Nissan
Well done, beautiful cooperation between czechs & slovaks!
And Japanese. At least :-)
@@tomfu9909 correct! ;)
Am getting claustrophobic at just the thought of climbing into that cabin 😬

It looks like Pagani from 2038, but It`s awesome!
Certainly looks and sounds impressive - nice to see a 'new' maker producing such a car. Bit of a shame that we only get 30 seconds of it actually moving...
You can see it being driven for a bit longer in this video
