I have frozen left over mashed potatoes and when I thaw and put in microwave they turn out perfect. I was a little skeptical at first doing it but trust me it works. Have done it many times
After searching a number of approaches to extend the potato life and not having to dispose of ones that have deteriorated, this would seem like the fastest and easies way to get 100% utilization of all the potatoes purchased. Thank for your Great video. Greetings from Ontario, Canada.
Totally agree, prepare. Most important believe in Jesus and get right with God, repent of your Sins. Talk to Him! Read your Bible. Invite the Holy Spirit to teach guide you ❤ He is coming back soon.
I do this all the time with Russets, whole milk and butter and spoon into plastic bag. I have found that thawing them didn't work well for me (watery), so I "thaw" them in the pan as I heat them up.
I have frozen mashed potatoes with butter, salt and pepper. The texture is the same as before freezing. I would recommend you hold the pepper and add it later as the flavor fades in the freezer. I do this every spring when my winter potatoes start to sprout.
I have that exact same sealer. I always freeze on a cookie sheet before I seal because, when it sucks out the air, if any moisture is in that seal it will not hold.
Yes both are good ways and it all depends on How Much butter and or cream you add before you freeze and make sure they are cold before you freeze so there is no condensation.
Thanks for sharing this! Im getting ready for the holidays and we always have to have mashed potatoes! Prepping ahead is new to me and i really appreciate videos like this! Helped a ton!
Great video. I've been doing this for about a year. I also add the ingredients before freezing. To get the potatoes in the bag easier, you can fold the bag down outwards. Keeps the top of the bag clean 👍🏻
BTW? If you roll the top of your vac bag down a couple inches before filling it, you'll keep it clean (for the sealing) and make it more rigid (for filling) You can also warm those bags using boiling water.
Take a container (glass jar, Solo Cup etc) place sealed end of bag in container fold open end of bag over the side of container fill bag with one hand..you will be able to remove bag and resume to filling the bag to your liking!! Ta Da!! Lol!..Found you a couple of hours ago..5min composting..just what I needed, no more no less..New sub..thank you!!
I have purchased potato flakes for long term storage. I have, however, cooked sweet potatoes and squash, not adding milk or butter, vacuum sealed them in vacuum sealer bags. When I thaw them, I add the butter and milk or brown sugar then.
Thank you for confirming I can leave skins on. I like them for the nutrients too. Another Wisconsinite, suburb of Milwaukee (Cudahy - yep for the bacon guy Patrick).
I'm trying to cook as many Thanksgiving dishes ahead of time, and this was helpful. Would be great to knock out the mashed potatoes beforehand so I have more time to spend with the guests!
Thank you for the comparison. This has always been my way to freeze them mashed, I grow a lot and most get canned but this is just another good way to preserve. 🙏🙌❤️
I’m new to your channel, and binge-watched several of your videos yesterday. You are a great communicator/teacher, and your videos are thoughtful and useful. Thanks for sharing your insight and experiences with us, looking forward to more.
They have a suction cup with like clips that hold the bag open. You may try looking at one of those. It does help a lot when you’re dealing with liquids and I know potatoes aren’t really liquid but you know what I mean stuff that is it has give to it.
Hey hun, great video, but let me give you a hint about getting them in the bag without getting potatoes on the edges. Put your bag over a bowl or glass and fold the edges over the outside. It will hold it open for easy filling and no mess.
Thank you for a great video. Keep it up. About the fresh. I've been freezing mashed potatos for many years, and I always use the leftovers. You know the ones thats been sitting in the fridge for a little bit to long. And they have allways made great mashed potatoes for freezing. And you can do them without vacuuminging btw.
Thanks for this video. Its great if you don't have time to pressure can potatoes,or if you find a great deal on them and want to buy a few bags at a good price and preserve them.
Could you try the russet and red stewed? I like mayo in my mashed potatoes. Try it. Kraft real mayo. Thanks for the comparison video. How long of a period have you frozen pre-made mashed potatoes then ate them? Wondering if they would be good after 6mo to a year?
I’m doing this today. Then go buy more pots at Walmart and can some. I actually fry my canned or bake them. But haven’t tried to mash them yet. I’ll do an experiment though. I make scalloped pots or Augratin ( spelling wrong ) with the dehydrated pots. Or hydrate and dry and fry.
Hmm. I flash froze leftover mashed potatoes with cream and butter in silicone molds about the size of muffin pans prior to sealing but it came out separating and very runny. I must’ve used a lot of cream in the potatoes. I think next time I’ll try reserve some plain potato before adding the cream and see if I prefer that.
When I vacuum seal food, especially messy food, I roll down the open end to create a cuff. When I'm done, I unroll the cuff and seal it. No messy food on the sealing end.
Fold the top edge over on the bag and It will keep it more open and clean while you load it. It works on everything meat veggies berries. I turn all my bags before I start and that way I can grab chicken breast with tongs and stick them in there and keep my hands clean
Just drop the bag into a pot of boiling water! I do mine like this and just boil the bag a few minutes, and they are hot, ready to eat! :) HEAT UP IN THE BAG!
I like adding a sour cream and chives powered mix to my potatoes sometimes, i wonder if that would freeze well, or can you add real sour cream? Would it freeze well?
Gday Mate Love your videos been doing the frozen mashed spuds for a few years now, Hope you don't mind me giving you a little tip of putting them in the bag you might find it useful I shove mine in my sausage stuffer with the large funnel works like a charm.
To fill your bags easier, put them into a big tall drinking glass or clean used yogurt container or something that matches the size of your freezer bag, and pull the edge of the bag over the outside rim of the container you use. This is also a good trick when filling a piping bag. I presume I am the only one that likes my mashed potatoes on the dryer and fluffier side and not soupy like a very thick white sauce.
Hi! I’m new to your channel. Loved the experiment! Question…how long can the already premade one with milk and butter stay in the freezer for? Thanks!❤
Thanks Lisette. As far as food safety, it will be fine indefinitely (as long as it always stays frozen throughout). Though, after some time, like most frozen foods, you would probably start to notice a breakdown in texture and probably taste. For me, I generally try to use them within about 6 months.
@@GreatLakesPrepping Great because I’ll be putting up 5 gallons of reds tomorrow. I never knew you could freeze mashed potatoes for that long. My family will be happy. Thank you! 😊 Happy Prepping!
Love it. Different question (Also asked on a dated video.) How do you prep dry goods like rice, noodles and dry beans for Mason jar vacume sealing for both long and short term storage? Vacume Mason jars sealing is my preferred method for both in which I would like to try. Do you freeze for 14 days to kill bugs/bug eggs in orginal packaging then dry in the oven on a cookie sheet for a period of time to remove any moisture before putting into Mason Jars to vacume seal? Do you then also put in a moisture absorber? Or Could you freeze in vacume sealed jars with a moisture absorber or is one needed? 🤷♀️
I don't ever freeze glass. I've read that it is ok in certain circumstances, but I never feel comfortable doing it. For rice and grains, I put it all in a sealed, food-grade bucket and freeze the entire bucket for a couple days. Then before opening the sealed bucket, I let everything come fully back to room temperature, just in case any condensation from the air would form on my frozen rice (or whatever). Once it's room temp, I then just transfer to jars and seal. No oven, no moisture absorbers.
I’m glad I found you. I found a great sale 5 lbs potatoes for $ .98 cents . I bought 25 lbs. I dehydrated 15 lbs. now I’ve never froze pots. But I’ve canned them. So now I want to freeze some and to know how they will be thawed and cooked. This sale was at Walmart. Yesterday.
I like your video because it relates to instant potatoes my wife makes instant potatoes at times and they get really gummy sometimes so that be like not putting any milk cream or butter in before you freeze. I just like to know that this works so I can get to work. Also I guess when I take them out of the freezer I would probably start microwaving them right away so they soften up and then maybe cut a hole in the air can get out I would now and I would not want to wait a whole day for them to thaw
I liked it the video, thanks for the info. Just wished you had tried the end potatoes with different forks . Especially after mixing both bowls with the same fork.
the best way to peel a big batch of potatoes is fill a 5 gal plastic bucket with potatoes and water, get a hand drill and a new clean toilet brush cut the handle a ltiile bit and put in hand drill to spin the potatoes and water in bucket with it and all the peels will come off easy in
I've heard people say that for awhile, so last year I tried it. Even made a video about it which is posted to this channel. It absolutely did not work.
No way!!!!! Don't waste your vacuum sealing bags. You can reuse them until you are done with them. I normally freeze things in plastic containers. Then, I wiggle them out and wrap it in plastic wrap (optional) and then vacuum seal it. Makes the job a lot cleaner and easier without wastage of the expensive bags.

It's becoming more and more important to not waste food, so this is a wonderful option to do with left-over potatoes! Great video, Great Lakes!

I leave the skins on, I’m a bit lazy, that’s how we roll in Hortonville, WI. Good job on the sealing. Makes me want to make a pot. Thanks, Paul J.

Good idea to use the flake to thicken if it's too runny! We use the instant potato flakes to thicken stew also.
Great tip on adding a bit of instant potato flakes if liquid has separated in the thawed product.

I freeze applesauce in muffin tins as well. 1\2 cup portions. Great for recipes
Yep, I butter/milk/salt/pepper, all ready to go and they are delicious!
I’m used to mashed potato with milk too, so it’s good to know it works like that too, thank you, I’m gonna make a huge batch up :)

The Amish make a huge pan of ‘wedding’ potatoes ahead of time and freeze so they are free to make other food.
thanks, am going to try the one on right. they both look good. but i like potatoes with butter, cream, oregano, and chives. thanks again

Starch with a Russet? No problem. After you peel and cut up the taters, soak them for a while in cold water.
Problem solved!
Would that remove starch for Yukon gold, too?

I feel like you risk getting remnants of plastic in your food. I would not suggest this personality. I could be wrong.
@@Nok112 I do this when I have left over chili,........... no issues what so ever. The foodsaver bags can hold up.
How did you microwave them dude?? Just as they were in the bowl yeah???
Also who knows if you’ll have the luxury of butter and cream by the time we need them in a tough situation? I’ve got eight pounds boiling away now x
I like adding a sour cream and chives powered mix to my potatoes sometimes, i wonder if that would freeze well, or can you add real sour cream? Would it freeze well?
I use sour cream /butter a little milk. no cream. My opinion the texture is better with sour cream.
Blast freeze on a tray in a tray first. It will seal better.

I never added cream , only milk . I’m going to use cream next time. I love a lot more of black pepper.
You could also probably put the bag unopened in a pan of boiling water & thaw it that way.
Place your bag in a jar or tall glass fold over the top and scoop in much easier, then just lift your bag and seal
